User Image Zuberi stood opposite his opponent, sizing them up a bit. He had failed spectacularly last year during the Sky festival and he hoped to redeem himself a bit, especially since his now mate had been the Champion last year. Had he been more sentimental he might have smiled at the memory of meeting her here a year ago, but as was his way, his face remained straight and stern looking. He and Haini had had a litter since then and he knew at least one of the boys would be competing as well. It would certainly be humorous if they ended up against one another later on in the tournament, assuming they both advanced.

Not wanting to look too far into the future, Zuberi focused on the lion before him and charged in. He wasn't one to talk needlessly, so he gave no warning or welcome. It was time to spar.

Tsusdi wasn't quite sure what had come over her. She'd never really held any interest in the Sky Ceremony in previous years, but for some reason she'd found herself considering participating this year. And then Nayu had found out, and the next thing she knew it was too late to turn back. In no time at all she found herself face to face with a lion she recognized as having once belonged to her clan - at least, until he got married and moved to his new mate's clan.

And he wasn't fooling around either. She'd hardly even nodded towards him before he was lunging in her direction. She squeaked in surprise and skidded out of the way, her scrambling paws kicking back towards him. Oh geeze, why did she think this was a good idea, again? She was gonna get killed!

Zuberi's charge made the female scamper away, but her flying feet caught him in the shoulder a bit as he tired to turn. It was a solid thump for sure and knocked him off balance a bit. Dang...she was fast. He'd have trouble hitting her for sure.

He tossed his head a bit to get his floppy mane out of his two-toned eyes, brown and blue narrowing a bit to focus. Right, he wasn't going to lose in the first round this year. He had a mate and two sons to impress, this wasn't just something to pass the time anymore!

He lunged forward again, swiping at Tsusdi's retreating rear end. Now that he was closer he wondered if he had seen her before his move to the Earth Clan with Haini. He hadn't talked much to those in the Wolf Clan before leaving, but they had all been very nice. Perhaps she had been one of the few that had welcomed him after he had joined the pride.

There was a surprised yelp as a paw collided with her rear end, and Tsusdi scampered away just that bit quicker. For a long moment she looked highly offended at being swatted so unceremoniously, before she realized this was a duel and hitting your opponent was... Kind of the point. Her ears pressed back against her head, and she spent a long moment pacing nervously just out of Zuberi's reach. Finally, when she managed to bolster her confidence a little bit, she jogged forward and did her best to swat the other lion's flank. It was a little bit half-hearted, but she was making progress! Her first hit had been an accident after all.

Zuberi turned to face the female head-on, not wanting there to be any sneak attacks. They circled for a few moments before she darted forward to swat at his own hind quarters, returning the favor that he had done for her. He scooted forward quickly, though, dodging the attack. It left her side wide open and he lifted his paw again, slashing at the open fur.

Of course, this battle wasn't meant to injure or kill. This was a sparring session, a test of strength and mind. He kept his claws in so the only thing that caused pain was the weight of his paw and the force of the blow. It was a decent hit, nothing that would rattle her too badly, but he was glad he had gotten a nice smack in after the embarrassing start.
