IC
Obans have moved in next door, a huge family of them with a trio of very loud Xaraan. It was easy to see that the family consisted of at least the mother and father, a granny, an uncle and two aunts, along with several kids of varying ages from tiny to almost adult. The teenage boy keeps coming and going at odd hours and the Uncle keeps sneaking in and out...
Just what are they up to?
Quest Tasks ||. This quest is to reflect on Maya's feeling for the Obans as a race. ||. The quest should begin with Maya finding out about her new neighbors and their odd habits. ||. Maya may find their behavior suspicious at first, even thinking that they might be up to something evil or wrong. ||. Should she try to do something about the family or try to discover what evil they are up to, she'll find nothing evil and will cause anger in the town for her trying to stir up trouble (especially with all those bad rumors with alks!) for no reason. ||. Turns out, the boy works late shifts at a tavern and the uncle is a flirt and lush so he's trying not to get caught after his night of carousing. They are simply a family who's moved to the new land (Jauhar) because they were disgraced nobles and want a new start. ||. Maya must come to terms with the idea of Obans being simply honest people and not evil.

Maya's dark eyes raised from the ground, following the plated hide of the Janarim in front of her. In her right hand was a long slender stick, one of which she had fashioned to mimic the weapons often found in battle. A large smirk twisted her lips as she contemplated the Janarim in front of her. "Grah!" She bellowed as she dug the balls of her toes and feet into the ground. Maya launched herself forward swinging the make-shift weapon towards the Janarim. A low snarling sound escaped the Oban-born creature, his jaw opened wide catching Maya off guard as its teeth snapped down on the thick branch. Shaking his head roughly from side to side with a growing snarl. Unable to hold onto the stick any longer the Janarim was able to yank the pretend weapon from her hands.
Stumbling to the side with the force of Kakkara's grip Maya blinked a few times in surprise. She didn't have the time to react as the male Janarim bounced forward slamming the stick into Maya's side. "Oomph..." Maya groaned wrapping her arms around her midsection, doubling over from the impact. Falling to her knees Maya leaned forward until the pain had subsided. Blinking it took Maya a moment before she started giggling, "Fantastic!" She shouted, beaming at Kakkara as she pushed herself up onto her feet. Using the stick in the Janarims mouth as a balance point the Alkidike woman leaned forward to pat Kakkara on his head only to receive a strange throaty hum from him in return.
A chuckle escaped Maya before her dark eyes scanned the forest around her, searching. It was easy for her to tell if it was night or day outside by the skin on the shifters around her. Judging by their current skin tone, it was night time. A series of squawks met Maya's ear and she found herself looking towards the neighboring home with slight disdain. It had been unoccupied until recently and having people move in wasn't so bad, except for the fact the people she'd seen only seemed to be two males. Both of which she had noted, did their business at night, which made her suspicious. She was aware of the History behind the obans, and she didn't care if her views were deemed twisted or not. Obans had enslaved other earthling tribes. She had even seen the scars on the Matori bodies first hand. Brutality she herself hadn't been keen on seeing, and while the water tribes had been freed from the fire people, it wasn't like a person could just change their colors overnight. People couldn't just suddenly change their way of life, it wasn't that easy.
Whatever people did in the dark of night, Maya had come to the conclusion were terrible deeds. Her fear had always been that the Obans craved the mastery they had over others and as such would still try to enslave others, only this time in secret and in a market that only smugglers knew about. All the while being very crafty about it. Luring in those with weak hearts using promises of love and happiness to draw them in. Her eyes turned back to her own house with a glare.
Was he kidnapping young shifters? Training them up in his home to later sell off!? Maya had to know the answer to her question, and stop him before he could kidnap any more shifters out of the village. Lately there was word about earthling disappearances in the area, and it all started around the time this family moved in.
Climbing onto Kakkara's back, Maya patted the side of the Janarims neck. Signaling for him to carry her off after the older man, she wasn't aware that a shifter not far off was watching her with just as much suspicion. Despite the large stature of the Janarim Maya rode he was able to follow the older man with ease, never once drawing the attention of the man they were stalking. Her eyes were fixated on him, so much that Maya wasn't paying attention to her surroundings. It was hard for her to admit that this particular earthling was easy on the eyes, unlike most of the shifters in the village. Maya gave a huff of indignation at her own wandering eyes as she continued to follow the man, rounding a corner only to find herself quickly asking Kakkara to back step away from the street they were on. Swinging her leg over she dismounted Kakkara, moving quickly forward so she could peak around the corner.
The man had stopped in the middle of the street with his hands resting on a young shifter's shoulders. He seemed to be saying something but Maya couldn't make out what he was saying. Her brows furrowed as she watched the female shifter nod slowly and say something in return. Maya grew aggravated when he brushed her hair out of her face to speak again, both of them lowering to the ground to gather up what appeared to be fruit scattered across the ground. Watching as the pair gathered up the items, Maya watched as the man said something again to make the girl blush and giggle. Eventually the man rose quickly and started walking ahead of the girl.
Maya gritted her teeth, was he just going to take the shifters food with him. That wasn't tolerable! Moving from where she was hiding behind a building she moved to cut him off to stop him from advancing any further. "You better not be stealing those!" Maya moved to intercept him.
"He's not stealing those..." The female commented as she caught up to him. "He's helping me carry them home since my bag broke and I can't carry it all alone." The shifter looked angry that Maya had stepped in to make sure her food wasn't being stolen.
Blushing Maya turned her head away but said nothing. Something was wrong about this, Obans were monsters... right? So why was he being so kind and helping out a shifter? Was he luring her into a trap. Gritting her teeth again Maya waited until there was enough distance between herself and the couple before she darted back towards Kakkara. No she would follow at a safe distance behind just in case, perhaps he really was sneaky and hiding something. Pulling herself up onto her mounts back Maya once again signaled for him to move. Using her legs and feet as pressure points to signal where she wanted to turn.
Following the man proved easy, as if he didn't notice or care she was following him. Strange, if he was up to something bad he would be checking over his shoulder. Making note of his surroundings wouldn't he? Maya steeled herself against the possible outcome. She had her bow so defending the shifter would be easy, unless the oban was someone who used magic. Part of her doubted that, the scars on his body told a very strange story. Discarding the thought as quickly as she could. There lingered some doubt that by chance she could be wrong.
She followed the oban until they had reached the shifters house. Watching from a distance until the oban left. Feeling more confused than ever, Maya turned away from the shifters dwelling and returned home.
The following nights seemed to be a little different. The man seemed to interact with a different woman every night, but the result seemed to be the same. Blushing red faces and giggles. Tonight however was different this time the man left first, seemingly walking the same path as before as he left the house. Watching him carefully Maya chose to ignore him, instead her focus was on the rest of the occupants she had yet to see inside. Perhaps she would get a better glimpse of them once the boy left, if they were slaves she would break them out. It turned out however that waiting for the boy to leave proved to be more challenging than Maya had first thought, time seemed to tick away slowly between the hours after the strange older man with his women seducing powers had left, and the younger oban boy leaving.
She could hear his voice as he was leaving but couldn't understand what he was saying. Watching as he left the house Maya moved closer to the windows trying to peer inside. What little she could see from the cracks in the curtains looked like a range of obans. All wearing elaborate clothes and they all seemed to range in age from infant to prentice. With the exception of a few older women.
"What do you think you're doing, Alkidike?" Came the snarling voice of someone behind her.
Turning around Maya's eyes were met by the stare of at least five other earthlings. Shifter, oban, and leaf tribe members stared at her. "Why are you spying on them? They are just a simple family seeking a home, much like you once did."
"I thought they were here to enslave people." Maya retorted rather abruptly.
"Tch, just looks like you're finding another way to cause trouble. We should never have accepted your kind here in the first place." Another earthling stated as he folded his arms across his chest.
Maya looked agast. “I thought that they were trying to steal away members of this village in order to make money off selling them on the smugglers market!” Maya retorted defensively, reaching out to Kakkara for support. If they wanted to threaten her she would be just as intimidating back! “There have been so many people disappearing lately! What else would explain the numbers around here decreasing?”
“You!” The one in the back shouted out, his eyes bored into Maya with a challenge that was never vocalized. “Your kind have been chasing us out of here and for what!? So you can take over our small town? We have been kind to you, and all we get is trouble and problems in return.”
“I think it’s time we stop this for good.” One man turned to another and nodded. “If we want to keep Ast safe we have to keep your kind out. Troublemakers don’t belong here.” There was a murmur as a few more shifters seemed to join in the small earthling gathering in front of her.
“What of the boy!? What does he do?” Maya interjected.
That only seemed to cause more anger in the group. “The boy works at my Tavern.” A woman started up, “He helps me serve the customers and to keep the place clean. He does it to help feed that large family in there.” She pointed towards the Obans home.
Maya was shocked, in all of her following she hadn’t come across anything they were doing harmfull. The doubt in her mind became a nagging growth. She had been wrong, obans weren’t all evil, the man was kind, the boy worked hard and the women with them strove hard to raise the multitude of children she had seen glimpses of inside the house. They were just like the shifters in the village. Her eyes flashed back towards her own home with a sinking feeling. Did that mean the Oban residing in her house was actually as Teiluj had said? There was a pain in her chest that pulsed, she had been wrong all this time. Teiluj had calmly waited it out.
“I’m sorry.” Maya muttered.
“You’re only sorry because we’re confronting you on it!” Maya’s eyes snapped up, her hurt expression searched the crowd. “We think it’s best you leave Ast. Tell the rest of your kind to leave us alone too!” Maya nodded, as the feelings settled into her mind. She had been wrong, judgemental, racist, horrible. She was acting just like the Alkidike she hated who had judged her daughter. The thoughts made her feel sick, her head spun. Being forced out of the village for her actions was a just thing, she would have insisted on the same outcome if the roles were reversed. Re-mounting Kakkara Maya gave one last glance back at the house, for now she would travel back home to Chibale spend some time with her mother Aisha and figure out how to go about life from there.

Suhuba Done! However I want to put this out there as I realized only after I finished that the work lush has several meanings. I went with it in terms of something Often used to describe something that is considered to be ultra-nice, often used with taste, item of clothing or a nice looking girl/boy. Because I figured this definition fit the purpose of this Quest best.
