Backdated to June 5, 2015

Natron very rarely went into the Rift - hadn't since he'd gone down to find Airi, really. But he sure as hell wasn't going to let Fangite go down there alone, even with the intention of finding him a youma of his own. It was just safer to have two officers, particularly when one of them was a General, and theoretically the youma in the Rift would listen to him.

"We can make this pretty quick," Natron said, "just in and back - this isn't really human territory, hanging around too long would be a bad idea."

"You know, the last time you said it would be quick, we were trecking all over the mountains." The captain grumbled. "You could have just told Airi to go with me. Had him stay at a distance." Fangite eyed the General skeptically as he pulled down the face mask of his uniform. "You're not still bugging from happened the last time I was down here. That was ages ago. I got outta there didn't I? Oh my god. That's totally it isn't it? You're still freaking over what happened." In a lot of ways, this was surprising to Fangite, considering how often Natron would worry about something. "You really need to just... calm down and go with the flow sometimes ya know that?"

"Yeah, okay, but down here we're not actually on an assignment from the capricious whims of the Negaverse," Natron said, "and we can leave whenever the hell we want."

The reminder of the last time Fangite went into the Rift made him cringe. It had been that disaster headed by Bischofite - and sure, Bischofite hadn't reared his head for a long while, but he really didn't trust the rumors that the man was dead. He wasn't sure Bischofite could die. He felt too much like a nightmare made flesh for that.

"Yes, I'm still worried about that, alright?" Natron admitted. "I should have been there for you. There never should have been a need - I just don't want you alone down here again, not when I could be there to keep you safe. I've failed you too many times, I don't want to do it again."

"This time." Fangite sneered, pulling his face mask back up.

"I came out fine didn't I?" Aside from a few scratches and bruises... "Persephone didn't think it smart to tell you. Said something about how you just wouldn't stop shrieking no or something like that. To her credit, she was spot on. Though she did have a valid point. She said this would be a good chance to learn to do things on my own. That you obviously wouldn't always be around. You being my CO, and me being your subordinate doesn't always mean that we'd always be paired together. I technically still have to take orders from other Generals." Fangite shrugged. "Technically I wasn't alone when I was down here. There were others."

Natron flinched, but Fangite was right. On all accounts. He couldn't always be there - they might be assigned separately, Fangite might patrol without him, any of that could happen, and he might not be on hand to come and rescue his boyfriend. Hell, Des might not want his General charging to the rescue.

"That's why I want you to have a youma," he said, as if it were the most logical segue in the world. "So that if I can't be there, you at least have someone you can call on. Ah, that way," he pointed. He could feel a distinct aura in the distance - a youma that was probably more powerful than the average feral creature.

"He has a point, you know," Airi said, breaking the silence he had held so far. "Better that you rely on a personal youma than simply calling one up."

ouch yes

"I get that... but again. Why couldn't like... Airi follow me at a distance or something. Given what we saw in the mountains he could be miles away and still get to me before something happened." Honestly, he was beginning to feel like he was being babysat. Natron had found his on his own, so why couldn't he do the same?

The Captain huffed quietly, then murmured something about 'maybe not wanting a youma', which was quickly followed by a quick 'no offense' to Airi. Damn his good hearing. "Is there any advantage to an intelligent one over... a more feral one? Or vice versa. You know, besides it's ability to talk... and think."

Fangite rolled his eyes, with an annoyed little noise as Natron led the way. Ugh, the General might as well bond with the damn thing if he was going to be doing all the work. Fangite understood that he was trying to help but.. wasn't this something he should be leading?

"Because I wanted to come with you, alright?" Natron said, and he felt a twinge of frustration rising. Why couldn't Fangite just accept help?

Airi, meanwhile, strode over to Fangite and bumped a head against his hand, an idle way of attracting attention. "You will want an intelligent youma because feral youma are stupid useless cannon fodder," the wolf sneered. "Not fit for an officer's side." Natorn had to laugh quietly.

He stopped at the crest of a hill, and glanced down. "Hopefully there will be something this way?"

Fangite's fingers flexed on instinct as he began scratching small circles into the youma's skull. "That is the most biased thing I have ever heard you say. You didn't even give the feral ones a chance." The Captain couldn't help but laugh. "You say that, but like, aren't some of the more intelligent ones prone to trying to one over their partner?"

He snorted quietly, standing next to Natron. "What do you mean hopefully... You're better at this then I am. Can't either of you pick something up?" Okay maybe his snark wasn't exactly needed.

Airi made a noise that was the wolfish equivalent of why-i-never at Fangite's suggestion. "Some of them, but some of us are far more loyal." He said, and then he bumped his head affectionately against Fangite's hand agan and trotted forward, down the ravine.

"It's the Rift," Natorn shrugged, as he half-walked, half-slid down. "There's so much Chaos everywhere - I can guess, but pinpointing is like. Finding a specific piece of hay in a haystack."

"Biased... Are we sure he's just not a really massive cat like youma?" The Captain snorted, patting the creature on the shoulder before it trotted off. "We can get an item that masks a youma's appearance and aura, but we cant whip up something that helps us pin point them? That's some kinda bullshit, no offense Airi, but why don't we have more on youma?" The Captain sighed. Time to just get this over.

At the bottom of the ravine, Airi stopped, and whined, backing up towards his General. Natron was going to ask what was wrong, but then he saw it - at the entrance to a cave wreathed in crystal was a youma larger than he had ever seen before. It looked like a dragon straight out of a storybook, silver and blue and massive,, and it was slowly uncoiling itself, waking up.

"Well, s**t," Natron said quietly. "We, uh, found one." His weapon flickered into his grip automatically - most youma would bow to him as a a General, but he would take no risks. He nodded to Airi, and then back towards Fangite, and the wolf followed the unspoken command, moving back to stand in front of the Captain.

"And who has so clumsily disturbed my slumber?" The dragon asked, in a voice that was neither particularly masculine or feminine - it simply was. The creature stretched, rising to its feet. "What tasty little snacks."

"I am a General of the Negaverse, and you will stand aside," Natron said, his tone sharp.

"Oh, how cute." The dragon laughed, and moved quicker than he could have anticipated, snapping its teeth inches from him. "Command me all you wish, tiny mortal, Icare not for your rank or your kind."

"You uh... Never like to do anything small do you..." Fangite murmured, eyeing the dragon like youma warily. "I don't like this." Airi's low whining only added to his mounting anxiety and bundle of agitated nerves.

"Watch you're step, General." He snapped, nudging the back of Airi's hind legs." The giant dragon was new to him. He wasn't even aware they could get that big. Fang wondered if there were others like this one. Others that were far larger. Far more dangerous.

"We'll just... get out of your way. Won't we Sir.

Natron was already backing away from the dragon, and cursing that he couldn't teleport n the Rift. If he could, he would have scooped up Fangite and Airi and been gone.

"My Captain is right - we've disturbed you and we'll just. Be taking our leave, then," he said, and he picked up his backing away.

"Oh, no," the dragon said, and there seemed to be a lilt of bizarre amusement in its voice. "You, General, will make such a lovely piece for my hoard. And the Captain and the tiny youma, will be such good snacks." And then it lunged, and Natron moved just as quickly, weapon at the ready. Whatever being a piece in its hoard meant, he was fine with it, as long as he could distract it long enough for Fangite to get away.

'I'm not letting you die because of me again.'

"Airi, take Fangite and go!" He ordered, and the youma sprang into action, biting one of Fangite's sleeves and starting to drag him back.

Fangite really really hated it when Natron was right. He never heard the end of it whenever Natron was right. Even when they were civilian's.

This was one of those times he'd be hearing about it later.

"What are you doing?!" He hissed as he grabbed the scruff of the wolf youma's neck. Though who his question was directed at... well it was probably both of them. "Get back in there and get Natron. You're his youma. Isn't that like your JOB?" But the youma wasn't listening to him. Airi, get him! You can't leave him back there! He can't take that thing on alone. Listen to me damn it!"

Airi only dragged harder, undeterred by the Captain;s insistence. "None of us can fight that," the wolf said, tone grim.

That didn't mean Natron wasn't trying. He was quicker on his feet than the dragon, his one advantage, and it meant that he was able to duck under its bite and drive his blade into its chest. Strange, blueish-green blood leaked from the wound, coating his weapon and his hands. The youma lashed out in response, and he wasn't quick enough to dodge - its claws sliced three bloody lines across his chest.

He didn't dare take his eyes off the creature for a moment, but that didn't mean he couldn't hear Fangite's protests. Of course Fangite was right. He couldn't take this alone, but he was going to have to, in order to cover their escape.

"Damn it, Fangite," he snapped, without turning to look, "listen to me for once and go!"

Maybe it was better this way. He would die down here in the Rift, four years earlier than he was "supposed" to -- but four years before he could purify and leave Fangite behind. Four years before he could make the decision that would end with both of them dead in a burning camp, as the last light of Order went out.

Four years before he could get Fangite killed.

If he died down here, at this youma's claws, none of that would happen. Fangite would be safe, would - he hoped - not purify on his own, would probably eventually fall into Alex's arms. Whatever else happened, at least he wouldn't die because his idiot boyfriend couldn't stop running his mouth at the wrong people.

"How charming," the dragon mocked. It opened its great wings, and lifted off the ground, out of Natron's weapon reach.

And then it breathed a strange blue fog, and Natron felt a heaviness creeping up his legs. He glanced down, and had one long moment to realize that he was being crystallized.

And then it enveloped him entirely, and he felt no more.

For Airi, the moment of Natron's crystallization was a moment of absolute agony. The youma let go of Fangite's arm to howl his pain into the echoing crystal caverns of the Rift, as the dragon laughed from where it stood over Natron's crystallized form.

"Listen to your General," it encouraged. "Run, and run far, or perhaps I'll have the both of you to go with him."
