Eva was trying to get her schedule back to normal. The only problem was that she had just become so accustomed with being a night owl from her time outside of Deus. Even waking up at the crack of dawn to train hadn't been enough to help her get to sleep at a respectable hour; whether she wanted to or not, she'd just found herself dozing off and taking an unplanned nap in the middle of the day. Then, when night actually fell, she'd spend the next few hours wide-eyed and awake.
...Well, maybe she wasn't trying hard enough to fix this wonky pattern. The fact that she was presently sitting in the middle of the training field and stargazing with a hot mug of coffee cupped in her hands probably had something to do with her sleepless night. The dark liquid had been heavily diluted with copious amounts of milk and sugar, and she took slow sips as she enjoyed the quiet, pleasant night.
Eva, how are you ever going to sleep if you keep drinking that stuff at night?
Mostly quiet night, anyways.
Eva grinned and raised the mug to her lips. "Shhh Chara, shhh! It's fine! It's mostly milk than coffee anyways." She took a big gulp this time, if only to playfully aggravate her partner. The action prompted the intended reaction.
It still has caffeine in it. That can't be good for you, and--...Eva? Are you listening?
She was not. Unabashedly tuning out her weapon's concerns, she continued to enjoy the atmosphere that surrounded her. kuuroxpii idk if Chance would be out that late but if not let me know and I can tweak it!! THANK U FOR RPING WITH ME ilu ;; <33333

In spite of recent changes in his life, the insomnia that plagued Chance seemed to have yet to abate. There were some nights that he found himself wide awake until three or four in the morning, and even more where he'd look at the clock and find it to be somewhere between five and six. He supposed it was becoming rather a problem, but there seemed little to do fix it. Asking any of his friends to spend the night with him was out of the question, and as much as Chance enjoyed his once-a-week routine with Otto, he wasn't about to overstep what was working very well for them already.
Which was why, on a balmy night on Deus, Chance found himself traipsing out onto the fields, his telescope in its bag slung over his shoulder, sketchpad and a small flashlight in the other. Asher was speaking of something quiet and nonsensical inside of his head, but grew quieter as they approached the darkened campus.
/ it seems your space has been occupied /
How interesting.
Chance drew closer, lips quirking upwards in a smile as he slowed his steps and came to a stop a few feet away from the figure. She had a cup of what looked like coffee in her hand, dark hair and a pleasant smile on her face; but she was entirely unfamiliar.
"Good evening," said Chance lightly, tilting his head curiously at her. "I have to admit, I didn't expect there to be anyone else awake right now."

Eva visibly jolted at the voice, having thought that no one else would be out here at this hour. Wasn't everyone supposed to be asleep right about now? Turning to stare at her unexpected company, she blinked at the dark-haired man a couple of times before letting her lips spread into a friendly smile. She had no idea who this guy was, but she was always up for chatting with new people whenever the opportunity presented itself.
Even if it was past midnight.
"Good evening," she echoed brightly, lifting a hand to flutter her fingers in greeting, "And you and me both! I thought I'd have this place to myself tonight, so I'm surprised to see you out and about." Wacky sleep pattern? Insomnia? Just a nighttime person? She wasn't sure what had brought him out here, but it was nice having someone to talk to besides Chara.
She gestured for him to come closer. "You're lucky that I'm feeling generous today," Eva teased, patting the empty spot beside her, "But why don't you come and join me? So long as you don't mind, anyways--I can always evacuate if you have things to do here." Her gaze flickered towards his bag and then back to his face.

He gave a light laugh, fingers loosening on the strap of the bag that was hanging off his shoulder. "I usually like to come out here late at night to see the stars," said Chance mildly, indicating the telescope's bag. "I tend to not really sleep a lot, and sometimes I go on the rooftops, but a lot of the time I find it nice to come here instead, it's very open."
Since she had offered so nicely, Chance padded over to where she sat, slinging the bag off and resting it carefully beside him as he took a seat beside her. He drew his knees up and rested his arms loosely around them, turning to give the young woman a grin.
"I'm always glad for company," he said, and then stuck out his hand.
"I'm Chance, by the way. I don't think I've seen you around before, have I?"

"Oh, how nice!" Eva chirped, tilting her head back to stare up at said stars, "Actually, before you arrived, I had just been thinking how there were some good points to sleepless nights. You don't get to see things like this during the day, after all." She extended an arm and pointed straight up at the glittering sky, taking a brief moment to appreciate the sight before she finally turned her gaze back to the man.
It had been kind of hard to tell when he had been standing, but once he took a seat beside her, Eva realized just how tall her new companion was. She didn't even hesitate to point this out, as if it was something he himself did not realize. "Woah, you've got a lot of height on you, don't you?" she laughed, sitting up a little straighter, "You kids these days really make me feel tiny!"
He was not a kid and she was not that old, but shhh.
Setting her coffee mug down on the ground beside her, she took the offered hand and gave it a firm shake. "Nice to meet you, Chance! I'm Eva. I've technically been here for a while, but I was off at an outpost for the last couple of months. Just got back recently!"

"There are definite good points," said Chance agreeably, finding this young woman's personality to be easy and friendly right off the bat. She seemed pleasant enough, and he sincerely hoped it wasn't one of those pointless facades where one only pretended to be nice.
"And exactly," he added, as he settled down. "You can't see the stars in daylight half as well, which is why nighttime is beneficial."
A laugh escaped him, Chance glancing sideways at her, choosing not to comment on the kid comment, because it had felt playful rather than condescending, and he found it amusing. "I'm relatively tall, yes," he said, eyes dancing. "Makes going through doorways a bit of a hassle sometimes, and when I'm trying to be inconspicuous, well..."
Her handshake was solid - another good sign. Chance felt his opinion of her rising.
"Eva's a lovely name," he said mildly, leaning back on his hands and staring up at the vast sky above their heads. "How long is a while, if you don't mind me asking? I've been her almost a year myself, which seems like...no time at all."

Lips tugging into a smile, she lifted her hand and held it parallel to the ground, measuring her height against his. "I guess I can see why you'd stick out more than you'd like!" she exclaimed, voice tinged with amusement, "Maybe the next time I go shopping, I'll invest in a pair of platform boots so that you won't feel so alone walking through the hallways." Although the words were playful, there was a thoughtful look on her face that implied that she was seriously considering it. It wasn't until Chara interrupted with a firm "no" did she actually scrap the idea.
Near strangers or not, Eva's demeanor was completely open and relaxed. She wasn't really a shy person to begin with, and the fact that Chance was such pleasant company meant that she was happy to drop what little guard she may have had. Anyone who was willing to humour company and a conversation at this hour was good in her books.
"A year, huh? Time does pass pretty quickly," she admitted, twirling her hair around a finger, "And as for me...geez. I think it's been...3 and a half years since I woke up? It almost feels like longer, though; I can barely remember what my life was like before coming to this place."
Three years versus twenty, and yet the former won out. It was a little scary thinking about it like that.

He pulled the telescope's bag towards him, Chance resting it casually across his knees. It was more a gesture of habit than anything else; the telescope was his most prized possession, after all, and he wanted to make sure that it was safe when he took it out of his room.
"Just get some really tall heels," he said with a laugh. "Then you can step on anyone that gets in your way."
Chance turned his head to look at her, eyebrows rising a little. "Three and a half years?" A low whistle escaped him. "That's a pretty long time, all things considered. I mean, it's only been less than a year for me, but it feels like I just got here yesterday."
He rested an arm over the telescope and glanced skyward.
"Where were you from, originally?"

"I think you're overestimating me," she informed him with a laugh, "I can stand in tall heels...but I can't walk in them." Man, what she wouldn't give to be able to march through the halls in some nice heels without falling, though. Unfortunately, to her great regret, she never did fit under the category of being the graceful type.
Shifting out of her cross-legged position, she stretched her legs out in front of her and sighed. "Right? As...terrible as it sounds, sometmies I'm surprised that I made it this long." Not everyone did. Her thoughts momentarily flickered to her lost friends, and she gave a sharp shake of her head before offering him a small smile. "I hope your year here hasn't been too hard on you though."
Bracing her hands on the ground for support, she leaned back and turned attention to the sky. "I was from a tiny town in Saskatchewan. One of those places where everyone knows everybody else, and where secrets don't stay secrets for long." The corner of her lips quirked upwards in a wry, lopsided smile, "As you can probably guess, I was always thought to be a little odd."
She turned her head to look at him and rested her cheek on her own shoulder. "What about you?"

"I wore heels a few times when I was in the boy's home I was in," said Chance musingly, tapping a long finger against his cheek thoughtfully. "I got them from some of the girls at the other home, and they were kind of weird to fit in." He gave a laugh. "I guess guys' feet are just made differently from girls, so the fit isn't quite as nice as it would be if I had smaller feet."
Chance lifted a hand, tugging idly at one of his curls. "I'm not sure...hard would be the right word, really," he said, casting a slightly amused look at Eva. "I mean, certainly there have been some...well, let's just say interesting experiences here and there. Maybe some a little more complicated than others, but not necessarily hard, I don't think."
He blew out a breath and laughed. "Then again, I'm hardwired differently than most, so maybe it's just me being weird."
The town of Saskatchewan was entirely unfamiliar to Chance, who gave Eva a look that indicated as much. "Quite the name," he said with a grin. "And I suppose everyone's a little odd at times. I'm from Detroit, Michigan myself, born, raised, but thankfully didn't die there."
He paused, and added, "Though not for lack of danger, because Detroit's a s**t city, really."

Grinning, she rocked to the side and gently bumped her shoulder with his. "Aww, don't worry. I'll practice wearing heels until I rock them so that you can live vicariously through me," she winked, and then abruptly flopped backwards to lie down on the grass, "And that's good! Honestly, I feel nothing but relief and happiness to hear that you wouldn't consider anything you've experienced to be hard. I'd rather things stay that way for you if at all possible."
There were plenty of her own experiences that she would never want to wish upon another person, though she wasn't so certain that Chance wouldn't have to face one of these challenges himself at some point. If there was anything her years at Deus had taught her, it was that things could and would take the worst possible turn. Frequently.
She promptly shoved away the memory--an imploded corpse, and how she had been next--that surfaced to her mind. No, that was long past. Time to focus on something else.
Grinning at his comment about her home, she gave a little shrug. "It's in Canada," Eva told him, as if that would explain the name, "And Detriot, huh? Can't say I've ever been."
There was a beat, and then she laughed, "Can't say I should ever want to go, if that's what you have to say about it."

"Excellent, sounds like a plan," said Chance with a laugh. A soft breeze rustled through the air, ruffling his dark head of hair. A few curls fell across his forehead in black spirals, but he made no move to brush them aside. A little laugh escaped him.
"I'm relatively certain it won't stay a certain way for long," he said, smiling down at Eva. "From what I've observed, things tend to get pretty crazy around here. But also, to be fair, it's very hard to upset me, or make me get emotional in general, so I suppose I do have that going for me."
Chance had never been to Canada, and he gave a little whistle of amusement. "It's a ridiculous name, to be sure," he said with a grin. "At least Detroit's is pronounceable. But no, you really don't want to go there, it's basically a rundown s**t town, pardon the rhyme."
Asher thrummed pleasantly in his head.
"So, Eva," said Chance, "What's one piece of advice you'd give someone new to the island?"

Eva abruptly lifted her hand and pointed straight at the man, her brows furrowing beneath her dark bangs. "Shhh! No, don't you dare say something like that, Chance! You'll end up jinxing yourself, and the last thing any of us, you included, is a terrible mission." Letting her hand drop and flop heavily onto her stomach ("Oof."), the woman's expression turned thoughtful.
"I do have to admit that that's a good thing, yeah. I guess the less you let yourself be affected by the things you see around here, the better." Theoretically, anyways. That was interesting though, to know that Chance had a good grasp on his feelings. Made her wonder...
Mentally promising never to visit Detroit, she responded to the man's inquiry with a thoughtful hum. A second later, a grimace spread over her face. "I guess my advice would be to avoid getting on the Death Division head's bad side. Unless he's decided to pick up a bible and become a nun in my absence, he always struck out at other hunters without hesitation if they said or did the wrong thing in front of him." She crinkled her nose at the thought, rolling over so that she was now laying on her stomach. Elbows on the ground, she propped her head with her hands.
"Hey, Chance?" She asked suddenly, biting her lip and lifting her gaze to look at him. It seemed as if she was about to ask him something important, and then-- "You said that you're hard to upset. What if, theoretically speaking, I put jello down the back of your shirt?"

He blinked in surprise at the hand pointing to him and then stifled a laugh, a slow smile winding its way across Chance's pale face. He lifted both of his hands in a gesture of submission, giving a slight incline of his head towards where Eva lay.
"Okay, okay, I won't say it," he said, and then dropped his hands again. "As for whether or not it's a good thing, well...that's rather debatable, I suppose."
His general lack of emotions had proved to be a good thing on many occasions, because it meant he had kept a level head when all else around him was going crazy; but at the same time, it also meant that he had difficulties understanding a lot of the things that people thought and went through. Being with Otto was helping that a little, because he was able to glean more just watching him, but it was a slow process.
"Oh yes," said Chance, and this time he did laugh. "I've heard of the Death Division leader. Seems he's quite the character, isn't he? I'll just keep my nose down and steer clear of the guy, his reputation most certainly precedes him in this case."
Eva's hushed tone made him turn to look at her again, Chance's brows raising. Her question, however, made a smirk tug at his lips.
"I'd ask what kind of jello it is and then probably see if it tasted any good," he answered her, with some amusement.

"I hate him...but I guess that he does get the job done in the end," Eva admitted grudgingly, a small scowl marring her face, "I just wish he wasn't so...you know." She made a vague hand gesture, and then sighed loudly. Enough about Caelius though--he was the last thing she wanted to think about now that she was back.
Eva swung herself back up into a sitting position, setting a hand on her chin and squinting thoughtfully at Chance. "And alright then...say that it was a flavour of jello that you didn't like! And I had the gall to make sure that it was super chilled before I slid a giant plate of the stuff down the back of your shirt." She spread her arms out on either side of herself to emphasize the "giant" part.
Apparently she found this new line of conversation to be fun if the little sparkle in her eyes was of any indication. Staring at him, she lifted her brows and tilted her head. Her gaze was expectant.
"Upset yet?"
