Shaman training was taking a bite out of Kani's time with her family; instead of helping her father and raising her little brother, she was learning from the Old Lady Aza. She was finding out that juggling both responsibilities was tough.

At the end of her training for that day, Aza came to her, that Kani needed to start preparing for the festival, which meant more practicing of the ritual performance as well as lectures on the Matori's lost culture and history... How was she supposed to spend time with her family? She just didn't have the time for both! Did that mean she had to choose one or the other?

Quest Tasks
||. The quest should begin with her finding out she's missed chores and her little brother has gotten into trouble while she was with her mentor. That she is missing out on family duties.
||. She should be told by Aza that she will be helping out with the festival, performing one of the ritual dances for Ubeli'ae. This knowledge should come with the requirement that more time will be needed for practice.
||. She should go someplace to contemplate her time issues, what she should do, and her beliefs; does she choose family or shaman?
||. Quest should end with Aza approaching Kani and confronting her on her wavering; forcing a confrontation. Kani needs to fix this problem and come to a solution by the end of the quest.

Kani finally had a day off. It was something she had been looking forward to for a while, and now that it was finally here she was ecstatic to be going home. With all the preparations she was having to do she had needed to stay with Aza for the time being. Now she could finally go home and see her brother and father. She had rushed out of Aza's place back into town before the woman could even blink and had run all the way back to their small little home. Thrusting open the door to their place, she was surprised when she spotted all the mess about. Dishes were dirty, the trash was piled high, all things she usually did as chores had just been left unattended. What was happening?

“Kani! Kani! Are you back for real?” Arthanon called out, running up and clinging to her leg. Why was he at home by himself?? Hadn't father specifically stated before not to leave him alone, but now here he was with the house all to himself. Brushing her fingers through the young child's hair, she smiled at him and kissed the top of his head.

“Of course I'm back. But why are you home by yourself? Shouldn't you be out with the other kids or staying with one of the village women while I train?” Arthanon frowned at that, shaking his head furiously. He looked almost ashamed. Had he done something terrible?

“I uh....got in trouble for hitting another kid. But they started it I promise!” he exclaimed. Why had her father not told her about any of this? Sure she had been busy working with Aza, but her family came before that. She didn't want to be excluded in her own family because of this training. It was her duty to take care of Arthanon and do her chores so her father could go to work without worrying about taking care of everything. Now she was failing at her duties as his daughter and she wasn't okay with that. She would have to go tell Aza that she needed to stop her training. She couldn't just ignore her duties to train for whatever the woman wanted her to. She had to go and tell her right away that she needed to stop and take care of her family first.

“Arthanon, I'm going to go for a bit. Go over to Xiyn's house and stay there while I'm gone please. I'll be back shortly and then we'll do things together.” Arthanon pouted, stepping away from her and wiping at his eyes.

“You're leaving again? Already? But you just got here! Why don't you just stay gone like father?” he shouted, running out the door. That just solidified her resolve to stop it even more. She didn't want to miss out on anything happening with her family, and really didn't want Arthanon hating her either. So she would go back to Aza and tell her just what she needed to. For her family's sake. Then she'd come back and do the chores she needed to do and take care of Arthanon again.

Set with her plan, she headed out to Aza's little hut once more. The path was easy to find now. She'd walked it enough to have it memorized, and when she came upon the home she could already see one of Aza's Zanteer running around the outside of the building. She was nervous to tell Aza what she planned, but it had to be done. She would do it for her family! Steeling her nerves she pushed open the front door to confront the old woman.

“Ah Kani you're back! Good, good I've got more information for ya. You'll be performing one of the ritual dances for Ubeli'ae. That means we'll have ta get you trainin' for that. Get yer' dancing skills up to par!” Kani balked at that statement. Even more training than before? She was already doing so much though! On top of the normal rituals for the festival she would have to learn to do ritual dancing now as well? She didn't know how to dance! Dancing wasn't something she'd ever needed to know! Practicing all of this would take so much time she'd never get to go home and see her family. Arthanon would be all alone and she'd be the one to blame for it. She couldn't do that to him. He was her little brother. He needed her!

“This isn't what I want!” she yelled at the woman, turning and running out the door before Aza could catch her.

She ran as fast as her legs would take her, trying to find some place to hide away from all of her duties and her issues. She just needed to calm down and collect herself. Yeah, that was it. Once she did that she could just tell Aza she was done, but for now she ran. She didn't know where she was heading, her brain wasn't exactly registering anything other than fleeing at the moment, but the moment her feet stopped she realized where she was. She had of course come to the only place that she could ever get any peace and quiet. While the ocean was her favored spot, she always seemed to bump into others while there. Cerith and Gael namely, not that she was unhappy with encountering them. She just knew going to the ocean wouldn't give her any quiet.

It was why instead she had made her way to her mother's grave, though she used the term loosely. It wasn't where her mother was buried, but where they had decided to put the headstone to honor her. Some good it had done. She was the only one who came out to it ever and took care of it. Even it had overgrown weeds and dirt covering it now because of her lack of time to focus on anything but her training. Leaning down she began to clean off the headstone as she thought over what she had to do.

She had to figure out something to do and let Aza know. She wanted to stay with her family and take care of them. She wanted to help Arthanon grow up and become a great young adult. She also wanted to help her father so that he could continue to do what he needed to in order to provide for them. That had always been her duty, to watch out for her family and make sure everything ran smoothly. It had been that way since her mother passed away and she hadn't complained. She wanted to help her father and brother out. Now she also had her shaman training to think about. While the training was long and annoying, and she had Aza constantly bickering at her, it wasn't all bad. She felt more useful when she was training and learning. Like her own ideals on things actually mattered and she wasn't just doing her duty. She could really be herself when she was working towards being a shaman.

“Oh mother what am I supposed to do with my life? I have no time for anything and can't decide what I need to focus on,” Kani sighed to herself, hugging the stone with her mother's name carved onto it. She'd know what to do if she was still alive. If she was still alive she wouldn't even have to decide on what to do. She could act like a kid and not have to worry about growing up so fast. She could do what she wanted instead of having to decide between her duty and everything else. She enjoyed learning the way of the shaman. Though she was resistant at first she had come to like hearing about the elements and how to work with them and finding her faith again. She had lost it a long time ago, but working with Aza was helping it return surprisingly enough. But she wasn't allowed to be selfish. Her decisions effected more than just her. They influenced what her father and brother both did. It was why she had to make this decision to stop training as a shaman. Her family needed her. She could always...pick up the training later on. Maybe when Arthanon was older. It hurt to think of it, but she'd have to go tell Aza she was stopping.

It didn't take her long to find Aza in her hut once more. The woman looked like she hadn't moved since she had left, and her two Zanteer had even taken a spot by her feet to wait for her. It was an unnerving sight, but she couldn't lose her determination now. Her job was to tell her she had to stop and then go back to her family.

“So, ya decide you want to be a quitter, hm?” She called Kani out, rising from her chair. The younger Matori didn't like where this was going already. It seemed Aza knew exactly what she was planning on doing and it scared her. She didn't want Aza to hate her for quitting, but she had to do it for her family! They needed her!

“I have to stop this and take care of my family, Aza! They need me. The chores aren't getting done and Arthanon needs me to take care of him!” she tried to explain, but Aza quickly waved her off. It seemed the old woman was ready for a fight and Kani wasn't getting away with things this time. She was in for an earful so it seemed.

“Don't you give me that nonsense, girl. You and your duty and blah blah blah. You are a good shaman! I know that, your family knows that, why else would your father have sent you here! You're scared to lose your family, I get it girl, but they will survive just fine without you bein' their made. It will be good for you to get out and do things, as well as for them. Yer father needs this just as much as you do.” Kani flinched at Aza's words, trying to think of just what she could say to her, but she honestly wasn't sure what she could say. She knew she wanted to be a shaman, now more than ever, but she still felt like she was abandoning her family if she decided to continue her training. She couldn't abandon them. Not when they needed her.

“It's my duty-” Aza cut her off again, and grabbed her arm, forcing her to sit down with her.

“Screw yer' duty and listen to me for once, girlie! You have been doing well, and we both know you like doing this. Think about yourself for once and not about others. You have to take care of you too. Not just others. Other than chores not getting done and Arthanon getting into trouble, nothing bad has happened while you've been gone, yes? Sounds to me they're doing okay. Chores being unattended and children getting into trouble is just part of life. It happens to everyone. They aren't going to fall apart and they still love you. You have to do what makes you happy though and if they hold you back from that then they're harming you.”

Aza's explanation of that actually made Kani stop and think. She was right on a lot of the matters. Her father would have told her if there was an issue with her training, and from what Aza was saying he had been the one to send her to her in the first place. Had this been his plan all along? She'd have to talk to him about that later, but for now she felt a bit relieved if it was true. Her faith in the gods as well as people as a whole had gotten a lot better with her training, and she was a fairly strict follower of Ubeli'ae now, something she hadn't even considered before. She hated not getting to see her family as much, but maybe she could work something out with Aza on the matter?

“If I...if I do keep working on my training. Can I maybe get a little more time off? Just to make sure my family really is okay?” Kani muttered, far more timid than usual. She was just worried about everything and had to make sure.

“Of course, girlie. I'll let you have more time with your family, as long as you promise to keep training! We have a lot of work to do for this festival!” Kani nodded quickly, hugging the old woman.

“I will. I'll keep trying to be a shaman. Not for anyone else, but for myself. My family will be okay.”
