restlessnessA long night had turned into a long morning. While most people were just starting their day, Leslie is at the tail end of his, a twelve hour shift in the infirmary still nipping at his heels. He's so tired, down to the marrow of his bones, but there's a restlessness in himself that's impossible to ignore. So he does the obvious, and goes to the cafeteria for coffee.

He's sitting there already of course, not exactly hoarding the good coffee machine but definitely seated close to it. Long hours are nothing new, but they run you ragged even after the feeling becomes normalizes; ant bites atop ant bites, gnawing away to the bone weary. Food is secondary and it shows: his tray is barely half full, his water bottle drained and his mug freshly renewed and simmering. He tries to read papers he can't remember the numbers for.
There's a slump to the figure in the corner of his eye that's familiar, a trudging gait and trailing sleeves. "Use the second one," he says without looking up. "First one broke down again."

restlessness "Christ," Leslie mutters, but takes the free advice, taking a seat in front of Jack invited. He helps himself to a soggy fry without asking, because he is who he is and Jack knows that, by now. "You break it from use or what?"

Underwater Observatory, time to read, time to absorb silence, and hopefully it'd be with someone tolerable. A familiar sight comes through the door, and Leslie huffs a little laugh, tapping his fingers against the pages of The Golden Compass. He offers up a cigarette without a word.

It wasn't so long ago that his feelings for Jack had been nothing but knots in his belly, resentment, and a desire to see him furious. Well, he'd still like the latter, but getting anyone worked up generally gave Leslie satisfaction: it was a reminder that they were human, a reminder that they were on the same level as the rest of humanity's worst.
"So," he says, bandaging up a patient, "is Lex always a huge ******** ********, or what? What's his ******** deal?"

"Please. I take better care of those machines than half of Deus does." Jack punctuated this with a sip from his mug and made a small face from the bitterness. "How's your schedule looking today, out of curiosity?"

Jack snorted. "Part time douche, whole time self-righteous idiot," he summarized as he tucked the end of the bandage in. "Why? You moving to a different Lifer?" He touched his chest and accused, "I thought we had something."

He wouldn't have taken it, normally. Attitude aside, drugs hadn't been Jack's pick of poison growing up. His parents had been particularly good at hovering just enough that he could never sneak anything in anyway, and if he picked anything up it would have been disastrous for his burgeoning basketball career.
But here at Deus, there was literally no consequence to it beyond a terrible smell afterwards. So Jack plucked it in passing and gave Leslie a thumbs up before checking on the monitors. he commented. "It's simultaneously the world's most interesting and most boring aquarium down here."
He glanced at the book. "Having fun over there?"

"Self-righteous is a good description." Leslie moved to go write on the guy's chart, his penmanship better than ever, even if there were still crossed out words from backwards letters and other errors. He was practised, but his brain still mixed them up, especially six hours into a shift.
"Don't get cute-- not that it's possible, you being a man-- but no, I just, you know. Tried to gnaw his ******** arm off, and the apology ended up with most of a brawl. ********."

rifeThe lighter is passed over in turn, and Leslie takes a long drag off his own cigarette. "Is it really that interesting?" Leslie asked, sounding bored to tears. "They're just big tentacle things. The appeal wears off pretty ******** fast if you ask me." He looked up, scrunching his nose to push his glasses up his nose. He only wore them for reading. "Yeah. Stormy lets me borrow some books sometimes. Finally finished Harry Potter a while back."

"I wanted to test something out in the towns. Thought you might be interested since it'll put your Life skills to the test." He took another gulp of coffee. "It tends to get a little messy."

Jack raised a brow at Leslie after explaining to the patient he was good to go and nudged him out the door. "I'm going to assume that was during the virus outbreak." He was pretty sure Leslie wouldn't apologize whatsoever if it had been of his own volition. "What happens happens. Apologizing for the s**t you can't control is just a waste of breath. How'd that go, anyway?"

"It's relaxing to look at, like a giant aquarium. But with mutants." He shrugged and minded his cigarette.
In all honesty he had forgotten Leslie knew Stormy, though he wasn't surprised she had him reading Harry Potter. He sure as hell was sure Abbi would have forced him into it either way.
"You guys keep in touch?" he asked. "Last I heard, she was too anxious to even do a mission. Figured she would've offed herself by now from the stress."

rife "I guess," Leslie conceded, sliding a scrap of paper between the pages to use as a bookmark. He gave Jack a puzzled glance. "Anxious? Haven't really heard anything about that. She breaks into my ********' room sometimes, no matter what I do with the lock. It's been a while, now that I think about it. You know her?"
