The past couple of days had been a bit more dramatic than Ime liked. The emergency delivery had affected her more than the liked to admit. On the bright side, she discovered that her alcohol tolerance was very low and it didn't take much to get giggly and forget. She and Thorn had stayed put that night and traveled the next, and now here they were. Ime could see actually see the windows of the town clearing on the horizon. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

Well, this was it. What was she supposed to do? With Thorn's existence as her travel companion came a certain set of expectations, even if they had decided they wouldn't tell Mama right off that they were officially a couple. She'd never brought a boy home before. Heck, she'd never liked a boy before, but here she was, arriving unannounced with a rather large one at her side.

"You ready?" she asked, turning up to Thorn and smiling. As nervous as she was, he had to be feeling it twice as bad. She'd play confident for him!

They approached the front door, a rather strong one to protect against the wind, and Ime knocked before trying to handle. It began to open.

"Mama, I'm home!" she called out into the small home. There was a shift as her mother rose from the kitchen and started toward the entryway. "And I brought a friend!"

Namora was a slender woman, much like her daughter, but she kept a curly ponytail of strawberry-blonde hair and her eyes were a soft sky-blue. Were it not for the similarity in their facial structure it would be easy to miss that the two were related at all. The woman smiled and approached, giving Ime a good hug that she girl returned with great love. When it broke, the older woman's eyes were on Thorn.

"Mama, this is Thorn. He's been traveling with me."

The thoughts running through Mama's head were clear. This was a big man, an indimidating-looking one, and of another race entirely. What was he doing here? A smile appeared shortly after, though, and she offered a hand.

"Hello, it's nice to meet you. You can call me Namora."

Thorn was nervous, his hands were shaking just a little, could her mother see his feelings for her in his face? Mother's were like that, uncanny and definitely full of intuition. "I'm ready." He said, this would go one way or the other and he might as well get this first awkward meeting over with. He gulped right before the door opened. Her mother was just as beautiful as she herself was but in a strikingly different way.

He was pleased to see the high degree of affection between them. It was heartening that they were capable of it and perhaps in time he would be included as well.

"My pleasure Namora," he said taking her hand and bowing over it. "Your home is quite beautiful, I like the rugged beauty here in Sauti, we don't get to see much of the ground itself in Tale." He murmured demurely, he was well aware he could be intimidating and he tried to subtly hunch so he wouldn't tower over them both. "We got here safe with the odd side trip, your daughter is a wonderful healer"

"Oh--" Mama was clearly surprised by the gesture, tensing when Thorn lowered himself but at least not pulling away. Her brow furrowed in confusion as he spoke and her gaze turned to Ime briefly. Her daughter just giggled and tried to stifle it with a hand. Thorn was different for sure, and from the look on her face, Mama might think he was a bit odd. Clearly he would be a decent bodyguard, though!

"Well, I was just making lunch, it wouldn't hurt to make a little more. Why don't you two come in? Tell me about your first adventure."

Ime smiled and turned to Thorn, trying to gauge whether or not he was going to faint on her, and then turned back to Mama and nodded. "Sure. Could we stay, do you think? I want to show Thorn around Sauti and--"

"Of course," Mama responded with a nod and a smile. The smile was... odd. Different. Unreadable. Ime was unsure of the emotion behind it.

When they entered the modest home, there was immediately the scent of cooking stew and the warmth of a cooking fire. Mama went to the countertop to chop some more vegetables and definitely meat, because look at the size of this boy. "So, where did you go?"

"Well, I went to visit Kelina and Sauron first. You remember them, you helped her have Sezarra and Kresimir?"

"Mm-hm."

"She had another three, and I delivered them!"

Mama's smile changed. It was beaming, proud. "That's my girl."

"I met Thorn on my way there, though." She turned to the man himself, gesturing for him to take a seat around their small dining table. He would undoubtedly have a bit of trouble getting his legs underneat. At the same time, though, she gave him a look and a nod that said it was his turn to join the conversation.

Thorn saw her mother's inscrutable expression and immediatley thought, she knows or at the least suspects, well at least she hadn't booted him out yet, he shot a glance at Ime, tried to tell her with his eyes, then quickly shuttered them.

The scent of food did much to calm him. "Hmmm that smells wonderful, I'm afraid I wasn't that fortunate hunting in Sauti that we could make our own stew on the way here."

He eyed the table dubiously, he could lift it onto his lap, or he could pull the chair away and kneel..kneeling seemed less destructive. He tugged the chair back and knelt, the height was just about right then if he leaned back. "Sorry," he shrugged, "My height comes from my mother, my father is tiny and spunky." He chuckled.

"Are triplets common in births?" he asked curious. "My family and I sort of live outside the main flow of society so I've never seen one. Our extended family lives on the other side of Tale and they don't travel much."

He felt very awkward, he didn't even fit the table, what must they think?

Thorn didn't seem to get the entire hint. Ime had been nudging for him to tell the story of their meeting, but he was talking so she definitely couldn't complain. She saw him struggle with what to do about the table and gave him an apologetic look. The poor guy, the house had been built with its tenants in mind, and its tenants were no giants.

"Really?" Ime asked. Was his mother as tall as him, or just tall for a woman? She'd have to meet her! Their next trip to Sauti, definitely. The monk took her usual seat and smiled to her companion.

There was silence then after Thorn asked a question. Mama was busily cooking, expecting Ime to answer for her, but the girl never did. She wanted Thorn and Mama to have a conversation, she and Mama could talk any time!

"Oh, ah... no. No, it's actually very rare. I can't imagine having three little ones all at once."

"That's why I stayed to help so long," Ime said, to both Mama and Thorn.

"Just one was enough, but that one loved to run off and get into trouble," Mama said, pointing her spoon at Ime.

Ime grinned and shrugged. "I liked to explore." Mama seemed to like him! Or, at the very least, she didn't hate him. Both of those were good things!

Well at least they handn't commented on his impromptu rearranging of the furniture, but the silence had been a bit awkward. Poor Ime, poor Thorn...poor Namora. "Triplets would be quite the handful."

He chuckled at the spoon pointing. " I liked to explore too, but there wasn't much in Tale cept the odd angry scorra that I often saw, the kinfa were very reclusive where I was so I couldn't go chasing after them." He worried that he would run out of things to talk about pretty soon. "Do you have a familiar Namora?" He asked. That seemed safer then making small talk about the cooking, and what kind of meat it might be. His nerves were going to be shot after this, and he would just melt onto Ime when they were alone and everything would be fine, he could do this. "I tried my hand at sailscales but they were more difficult then I expected."

"Oh, good," Mama replied in that way mothers had. It was an inconsequential thing, that they both liked to explore, but it was better that Ime find a boy who wouldn't mind detours and exploration. She seemed to want to talk to Thorn, though, maybe feel him out a little better if he was going to be traveling with her baby. What mother wouldn't? "There are big, long stretches of nothing but rocks here too. Luckily Ime didn't feel the need to explore bareen wastes, although she did start climbing a mountain. Do you remember that? You were so small, you didn't get far."

Ime shook her head, smiling. Good, this was all going rather well, she thought. Mama seemed friendlier than she might have been if she was intimidated, or if Thorn was only a body guard. Already it seemed like she trusted him at least enough to tell the truth when she asked about him. She was chatting about old stories too, which felt wonderfully warm. Mama went to the reservoir that caught rain and held harvested water and brought the two young people a cup each.

"Well, I don't know if I'd call him a 'familiar,' exactly. The neighbors and I bought a couple of capramels for the larger supply runs. They live out back there, and they don't do much but... well. What animals do. So you're from Tale, then? Do you live in a big city?"

Ime had, of course, named both of the capramels as a child and went to visit and chat with them regularly. She'd bring them treats of plants that didn't exist inside their pens. Maybe she'd bring Thorn to see them later.

"Yes from Tale, my parents are kind of drifters so we set up little camps and move as we like, never inside the big cities, she wasn't even in one when she had me, they called the midwife out and Dad helped how he could. Usually we are close to some of the cities but not close enough to get too many visitors. My parents prefer a quiet life." He was relaxing in increments now, slowly getting to the point of being comfortable.

"Ive heard of capramel, but I've never seen one. Are they terribly big?" Odd question coming from someone so large himself. "Have you lived in Sauti your whole life? What is it like in winter?" If this was summer he could just imagine winter. It was weird to be covered up so much, it wasn't that it was that shockingly cold, just chill, very chill unless you were in the sun.

Ime knew very little about Thorn's family, a fact she regretted once they had gone too far to go back. She was determined to meet them and reminded herself of it each time she learned something new, like now. Thorn had said they lived outside of the city a ways, but he hadn't told her they moved around.

"That's how most people live in Sauti," Ime piped up, excited to find a correlation between life here and Thorn's life back in Tale. "There's only so much food, so they move around with the seasons. That's what Mama did before she had me." The young woman nodded and took a sip from her cup. Water was rare too, but they were lucky enough to live right by a source and had picked up the skill of filtering their share in their travels.

"That's true. I was part of a clan of about forty nomads. I decided I wanted to settle down with Ime, though."

"She went to other villages with me strapped to her back."

"She was a good baby," Namora said, smiling softly.

"Capramel aren't too big. They're real gentle, a little bit... dim, maybe. We can go visit them later, if you'd like."

Mama She grabbed a long fork and prodded the vegetables stewing. Perfect. She took up the bowls and Ime leaped to her feet to help. "Mm-hm. I've always been a Sauti girl. So where did you two go?

"Well, I went to Tale and Jauhar and found work in both, and then came back through to Tale and here."

"Any interesting cases?"

Ime sighed. "Well, I helped two racists bring their baby into the world. Mostly against their will. In Sauti, too." She had gone back to complain to Thorn soon after and stolen him to the tavern. He knew the story and she wasn't bound to forget.

"What, really? Racist against Ice, or?"

"Oh, no," Ime said with a little laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. "They were a traveling family of Ice folk. Maybe Wind, but hybrids for sure. 'I will not let a hybrid touch my wife!'" She shook a fist to accentuate the fact and then took up two bowls of soup and returned to the table to place one in front of Thorn.

"Really!"

"Yup. The baby was breech, though, and I was the only healer for miles, so they had to deal with it." Ime nodded resolutely and sat down wither her own bowl and a helping of jerky to share with Thorn. Mama disappeared just a moment and returned with a pillow and offered it down to the young Leaf man.

"Here. For your knees."

Ime counted that a definite show if approval! Then Mama joined them and sat, beginning to eat. "Well, people can be ignorant."

Ime just smiled and piped up pleasantly: "I know!" Very little bothered her, it was true. She'd gotten over the rudeness of the new family and chosen to take it as a life experience instead.

The stew served held no meat but had bits of stale bread and a bounty of vegetables. Meat was hard to come by in Sauti sometimes and the capramel were too useful to slaughter. Their protein came mostly from other people's hunting trips and what could be traded and/or preserved.

Thorn smiled, "Oh thank you!" He put the pillow under his knees and sighed with relief, they were strong knees to be sure but well he was a big man and gravity was not the kind mistress always. The stew was very good, he did notice the lack of meat and resolved to go hunting and hopefully not get clobbered himself, he thought his coordination might have improved some since his last boughts of beast battles but it was always better to be well prepares especially in a place like Sauti.

He had asked what breech was when Ime had told him not too long ago, it didn't sound at all comfortable and he was kind of grateful that he couldn't have that happen then again he would be helpless to those to whom it could happen.

As for the stupid racist icelings they were just lucky his Ime was there and took pity on them and their unborn child, that man could have lost both and he was so proud of Ime for being so strong under such difficult conditions. Would he be in that position someday? Would it be worth the scare?

"The stew is exellent, very hearty." He sighed with pleasure, nothing felt better then a full stomach especially of such succulent fare. He put his misgivings behind him and focused on the food idly listening to the conversation.

"Of course," Mama said with a soft nod. As the conversation continued she listened, smiled, and then shook her head. She might have had more reservations about serving any client that was biased against her daughter. Of course she'd have to do it for the sake of morality but she highly doubted Ime gave them any sort of tongue-lashing for their indiscretion. At the compliment toward her food her smile grew and she offered a polite nod.

"Thorn and I met healing, you know," Ime continued, wanting to share the story. "He just sort of fell over while I was on my way up through Tale." She and her mother had a sort of understanding about discussing healing during dinner. No specifics, no graphic descriptors, and all was well. She would not mention how bad the wound had actually been at the time.

"Healing's a good way to meet new people," Mama agreed.

Ime meanwhile smiled over the table at Thorn, eyes bright. She was rather fond of him and this new meeting seemed to be going well, especially compared to what she had imagined. Of course Mama would be reasonable.

"Yup I was very lucky that she was there, magic sure comes in handy though I can't conjure up much myself my mother can, she's a shaman, she taught me simple things but I wasn't that into it to deserve learning the really cool stuff. I think Dad is allergic to it but he puts up with her antics because he loves her and she is amazing."

Thorn scraped out his bowl, "Where do I put this, can I help at all?" The stew was excellent and very filling, Ime's Ma was an excellent cook.

He had to be careful not to blatently show how much he cared for Ime and had to catch himself not only with his mouth but with his hands as well. He wanted to hold her hand, brush hair from her lovely eyes, a color he had never seen before and hoped he would see every day for the forseeable future. Who knew that acting "normal" (as normal as he got), would be so hard.

"For the longest time I didn't know what I wanted to do," Ime admitted. "I think I made the right decision, but for a while there I really wasn't sure."

Rather than wait for Mama to do something with the bowls, she took them up herself and brought them to the counter. She left the house only briefly, going to retrieve water from the well to boil in the stew pot to wash the dishes.

While she was gone, Mama turned to Thorn and gave him a look all men must have feared. Oh, yes. She knew. She knew, and she wanted someone to admit it.

"A body guard, hm? Or just a traveling companion?"

Thorn by now was much less nervous, he had accepted Namora as part of his family and knowing what he looked at since he was sure she knew he said the first thing that came to his mind.

"I love her. I want to make her happy and make sure she is save so all of the above plus more." He looked out the door, "I would step into fire for her. She saved me when she didn't have to, and shes been saving me everyday since." He let what he felt for her show on his face for a moment then shuttered it.

"I know I'm not the best catch, a wanderer form an odd family but well I want to be the best catch for her."

Mama's eyes grew wide. Love? Ime hadn't been gone nearly a month and this poor boy had fallen in love? Young love as she understood it was a dangerous thing. It had gotten her into trouble in the past, and although it had brought her the most precious gift it had also earned her a fair deal of suffering. She didn't want the same things for her little girl, even if she had become a young woman.

At that time, Ime returned, catching only some faraway phrase about 'best catches.' Her eyes widened too and her lips fell open. What was he doing?!

"My, that's... certainly sincere," Mama said, "Of course I expect you to be careful, and to take the proper precautions--"

"MAMA." Ime felt like her head might explode with all of the blood rushing to it. Her cheeks and ears were vibrant purple, and were she not hefting a bucket of water she might have clapped her hands to her face as well. Instead she rushed to the pot and poured the water, then wheeled around and clutched her hands to her chest.

"What did you tell him?"

"Calm down, sweetheart. You have no reason to be ashamed."

Ime seemed unconvinced as she stood stock-still between the kitchen area and the nearby table.
