To approach a janarim was always risky. The babies were less dangerous, although they could still tear your arm up something fierce if they decided they disliked you. Sebastien had only been walking when a janarim wandered into his path, alone and wounded. Something had torn a deep rend in the janarim's side. It might have been hunting and been separated from its pack, it could have been a lone survivor, and it might gave just been defeated. Whatever the story, the rumbling reptilian creature was angry. Sebastien heard the rumble rise from deep in its chest and froze. He had two options, stand up to the thing or run, and running seemed rather cowardly, didn't it? He straightened his back and stood up against the beast, raising his whip. The janarim let out a loud hiss, which he met with a crack of the whip. The beast lowered its head and suddenly Sebastien thought that this might not have been the best idea. Still facing the creature, still trying to stare it down, he began to back up slowly. The janarim came toward him just as carefully, keeping his gaze locked.
Don't run or it'll chase you. The most basic rule of beast taming. Slowly walking, backing up, taking a corner and moving around the side of a rock outcropping until he could not be seen, and then finally he picked up pace and made his escape. He dodged into a small separation between stones just to be safe and just stood, waiting. The janarim never came by so he felt safe enough to head back to where he had come from.
