He wandered from the beach over to the towns, at peace with the dilapidation. He wasn't quite sure, yet, about all this skin and flesh and unexposed bones. Clothes were itchy and uncomfortable, but after a brief stint of taking them off, he found he got cold without them.

Being cold was weird.

There was a building all put together and neat not far ahead, and he struggled to get his arm back into the hole of his jacket, tongue sticking out from the effort of it all--

And then ran straight into the door.

Being a people was hard.

Rep dropped into fighting stance when he heard the thunk of something hitting the bar's door. When nothing burst through he made his way cautiously over to it and opened it, standing clear of the path something charging into attack would take.

"The <********>?" he snarled.

Oh! He knew this face. It had been very unkind to him, but he wasn't Lurks Beneath now, he was someone-else.

"Hello again," the totally normal and perfectly acceptable human said, waving brightly at Rep, and tried to wriggle past him to get into the bar. "I want to explore," he explained, clearly with the expectation that Rep should let him in.

Rep didn't recognise the face of the guy who showed up at his door at all but that wasn't too out of the ordinary, the island was large and he only knew a small proportion of the clientele that showed up at the bar, there were some guys who'd come in, drink without a word and then go right back off on whatever shift they had that day, he made it policy not to deal with it.

Taking hold of the guy's shoulder firmly Rep said. "This is a ******** bar. You explore without ******** breaking anything, without going behind the bar, you break a single ******** tumbler, a single ******** bottle and I don't care what the ******** you are high on I will kick you out on your a** so hard."

He looked up at Rep with wide, owlish eyes, nodding along a bit like a bobble-headed doll.

"A <******** bar!" he exclaimed, ecstatic at the name. "I won't ******** break anything, do not worry." He pat Rep's cheek with a squishy, fleshy hand, giggling in an absent-minded sort of way, craning his neck to try and get a good look at the interior. "I just want to see! No need to kick and fight. I promise! On my brother's bones."

To demonstrate, he held up his two pointer fingers, crossed into an X.

The guy got a concerned look at first, only for Rep to freeze entirely at the contact against his cheek, completely derailed from his hostility. When he moved away again he seemed to resume a little more rattled, backing up out of the figure's way.

"Then look around I guess." he said, grudgingly.

Lurks began humming nonsense under his breath, truly enchanted by all of the human gadgets and trinkets, staring openly at the bottles of liquor and all their shiny, glassy glory.

"It is a nice set of shinies," he said, appraising, tapping his fingers on the bar erratically. It sounded all wrong; soft and dulled, no sharpness in it at all. In any of him, really. Not a single exposed rib! What a pain!

"Is this all for you? That would be greedy, but I would keep it allll for myself, too."

Rep made his way over to the bar with his usual unhurried curiosity, appraising Lurks carefully in case he had to remember the guy for the sake of barring him from ever coming into his establishment again. He just seemed that sort of ******** weirdo, the kind you couldn't take your eyes off or they'd end up rifling the register.

"It's pretty shiny." he agreed looking over the bar, addressing the other man as if he was five years old.

"And well. It's sort of all mine." he said, and there was that twinge, that deep twinge of resentment at giving things up, at the audacity of people to come in and buy his things, his bottles, his possessions. The bar was an exercise for him, a daily test that he could let things go at all, and every day he struggled with it in his own silent way. He kept the bottles, they went in the hoard like everything else and he dreaded the day that someone tried to make him get rid of them too.

"But sometimes I have to sell them to people."

Lurks looked about as excited as a five year old in a candy shop, so Rep's treatment wasn't all that out of line.

He looked at Rep with a funny look in his eye, bafflement mixed with childish frustration. "No," he said, "you do not have to do anything. Humans don't have to do anything at all except breathe and eat and drink and I learned that the hard way." He hopped up onto the counter, ignoring the seats.

"Why?"

"Well I want more s**t than just bottles of alcohol." Rep said. "If I want other s**t, I need to sell this s**t and get even better s**t I want more." Lurks was getting a very strange look, though on Deus even his comments about "humans" did not set off too many alarm bells, they weren't humans any longer really. Lurks came across as a slightly eccentric Life hunter just out of the labs and completely bereft of social skills.

"Hunters need to do that s**t too, even if we aren't human any longer. But fine, I don't HAVE to do anything, I can do whatever the ******** I want, and what I want to do is trade this stuff which doesn't cost me all that much, for money which I can use to buy all sorts of s**t."

He raised a brow at Lurks. "What's your name?"

He looked so baffled by the idea of selling. "Why can't you just take what you want?" he asked, curious. "That is what I do."

Although the more Rep explained, the more he was sort of starting to understand.

"Scorpio!" he crowed, too entertained by his own name. "I like your <********> bar," Scorpio continued, patting whatever was within reach fondly.

"I do take what I want, but sometimes the people out there are stronger than me or it's too much trouble and I just trade instead." He didn't seem to be too phased by the fact he was explaining things to the other man as if he was an alien. For Rep his general estimation of other people's mental capacities were very low indeed and this just seemed about normal for the level of some of the recruits to the island.

"Scorpio?" he said, a little incredulous. "Your parents must have been...interesting people. Thanks though, it's pretty decent as shitty dive bars go, and it has music too, which on this island is a ******** blessing. It's just too quiet without."

And reminding himself about the jukebox by mentioning it, he made his way over to switch it on.

"Oh," Scorpio said, the concept finally starting to dawn on him. "That makes sense. I'm sorry you are weak." That must be tough.

The hunter beamed, watching Rep head towards the metal box. "They were not," he said, quite firmly, "but that is okay too. They are dead, and I am better anyway."

When sound came out of the box, Scorpio reacted so harshly that he fell clean off the counter, scrambling back with a suspicious face. He looked at Rep with deep betrayal, pointing a finger at it.

"What is that!"

"I'm no weak." Rep started to protest. "But if I was it wouldn't be a ******** problem." He was quite happy to toe the worthless party line as far as Death division went and it was starting to make him a little bit more relaxed about other people thinking whatever they wanted about him. "And aye, my parents are dead too, or well my mother is, ******** knows who my father was."

This guy was really ******** out of it Rep realised when the music kicked in.

"Mus-ic." he said sarcastically. "Lady Gaga. Surely you urnae so ******** sheltered you've never heard ********> Gaga."

Scorpio looked well and truly baffled by the notion of being okay with being weak. Humans continued to surprise him at every turn. He'd known the red ones weren't to be trusted.

The explanation didn't really clarify the sound. On his hands and knees still, he crept closer to press his ear to the jukebox's speaker itself, apparently unbothered by the volume, even at such a close proximity.

"This," he said with grave certainty, "is not any good."
