On this Thursday morning, a second cup of coffee brewed from his own machine on break, Jack did something particularly unJacklike: he beelined for a person with the brisk walk of one in search of many, many answers. And between the reader and the narrator, it was near impossible to believe that he was willing to people even then. Such was the nature of needing to know things.

He took a sip from his mug and sighed with satisfaction, and then he set it down on the table between them as he took a seat.

"Hello, Lucky. Are you busy?" It didn't sound like a question. "We have a lot to catch up on."

The transition between divisions was going surprisingly smoothly. Exiled from the life labs, Lucky had found a nice, quiet, relatively deserted corner in the library and had set up a temporary office of sorts there. His method, if you could call it that, appeared to be to sprawl himself across half the table. Somehow, he was managing to constantly alternate between clicking away on his laptop, texting on his phone, and flipping through a new book for something he could never find. He'd traded runic diagrams for maps, and was methodically crossing out quadrant locations in red pen one at a time.

"Oh, yeah, sure," Lucky mumbled without looking up from his laptop, holding the red pen between his teeth. It took about half a minute before he grabbed his headphones and pulled them off, leaving the tinny sound of electronic music hanging between them. The pen clattered to the table shortly after. "So what did - Jack?"

"I - I mean - not that that has to be your name... here..." Lucky quickly pulled himself back into his chair like a spring snapping back into place. Don't make this weird, he mentally repeated the mantra to himself while staring at Jack like he had grown a second head. "Just a l-lucky guess - ugh -"

He gazed at Lucky until the other man finally noticed him and then remained unmoved as he flailed. Several beats after Lucky finally trailed off, he took a sip from his mug as casually as one pleased.

"I wondered if you'd still be alive after that fall," Jack mused. "Again, I suppose I should add, seeing as your existence had been questionable for quite some time before those viruses struck. Naturally, I'm sure other people have sought you out for answers over this or that, so I imagine this process should be quick and painless, unlike your other endeavors."

He gestured with his eyes towards the laptop. "Might I ask that you turn the music off? It'll distract us."

"Is there anyone," Lucky groaned, practically collapsing over the map with his face in his hands, "Who did not see that?"

He was already looking increasingly uncomfortable as Jack rattled off a list of pointed observations, though at no point did he try to interrupt Jack. Stupid as it sounded when it was all reasoned out, it was hard not to feel self-conscious around him. And there was a lot to be self-conscious about right now.

"Oh -" Lucky seemed startled by the request and immediately leaned over to shut the laptop heavily with both hands. The music stopped abruptly, and Lucky remained poised on top of the thing as if he could no longer remember how to relax. "Sorry, sorry - uh --"

"W-what did you want to know?"

Jack didn't deign to respond because it was a ******** helicopter.

"You could start with where you've been for so many months," he prompted. "And why, during the first outbreak we were exposed to, I saw...not you but an image of you. A projection?" His brow furrowed slightly. "Not a ghost, I would go so far to say; it wasn't like Parish."
