IC

Nyiim had just gotten back from Jauhar and had settled in before running to the market for supplies. He had barely even reach the market when he heard what sounded like distress.

Following the sounds, he found a woman cornered - a cluster of trees behind her blocking her escape, and a large man in front of her closing in fast. Nyiim would have to do something to help the woman, or at least that's what they were expecting of him.

Quest Tasks
||. The quest should start Nyiim finding the woman struggling to get away from the man.
||. Nyiim will want to help her, squaring off with the guy to let her get away.
||. Just when he thinks he is winning though, the woman turns on him and draws her weapons as well.
||. The man and woman are a bandit couple, working as a team to lure men into this situation all over Tendaji to rob them of their things.
||. The woman in particular is a very dirty fighter - something Nyiim will have to reflect on whether he has a code against fighting women and where the line is drawn.
||. The quest should end with Nyiim either fighting them both back and getting away, or losing and having his things stolen from him.

The strike out to Jauhar had been a successful one. There had been a small village, half on the jungle floor and half in the trees, found off the map and entirely abandoned, as promised. While there was not a particularly large amount of loot to be had the exploration itself had been rather enjoyable. In the end Nyiim had an updated map and a few old coins scrounged from the dirt floor of a particularly large hut. There was only so long the Leaf man could remain away from the rest of society, however. As a younger man, Nyiim had thrived being completely alone, save to barter with fellow tribesmen or occasionally appear for some community gathering. He had been content to exist by himself. Over time, though, that had changed. Now he found himself seeking out interaction with others and, if he could say so himself, he thought he was getting rather good at it. Life had become much more interesting with the introduction of different cultures and personalities, and the world seemed beautifully large in contrast to his life previously which contained only his home village and the hunted lands surrounding it. Now it was time to head back home, to reconnect with friends and return to the familiarity of home in time for the festival. He had never been very fond of such things before, but now it seemed a shame to not attend.

Being away from home so long, though, meant the man needed to restock his supplies. He stopped at home to rest for the night and awoke refreshed and ready to head into town. His own village was so small that it lacked a large central hub and so he took to Yware proper with a fair amount of coinage and his loyal raptrix by his side. Bosede fluffed and panted, pleasantly warmed by the sun.

Nyiim's mind was elsewhere as he walked, either lost in the sun-dappled foliage or mulling over what he'd need to purchase. It was a bit of a shock to the system then when he heard a woman crying out.

"No, please! Help!" she cried. The archer's attention switched quickly to the sounds of a woman in trouble, perking to listen. She didn't sound very far off, and the strain in her voice was obvious, so Nyiim diverted from the path in the hopes of finding the source of the troubling sounds. "Someone, please! Let me go!" Nyiim's brisk walk turned to a jog.

He spotted the commotion just over the rise. He saw a Shifter woman cornered, a copse of trees behind her blocking her best route of escape. From the front came a rather large Leaf gentleman, dagger in-hand. Nyiim's first thought was that a native had found a less-familiar sort of person on the way to market and decided to take advantage. Amongst the honest populace existed a fair number of criminals who chose to exert their strength over others rather than making good use of themselves. Nyiim felt a sort of personal reprehension for this type of person, perhaps considering that his young life had been saved by the kindness of strangers. It wasn't something he worried himself with all too much. Why bother?

Just as they reached a decent sighting distance, Bosede began to rumble, his feathers pushing up at the ruff and his head lowered to the ground. The raptrix might be more trouble than he was worth in this case. The sounds the beast made could easily alert the woman's attacker and complicate the situation beyond its current fragile state. Nyiim turned then to Bosede and gave him a firm order: "Stay." The raptrix regarded his master with turned eyes, but remained in place and continued to grumble in displeasure at the situation as a whole.

Nyiim approached with careful and quiet footfalls as if stalking prey, but at a rapid pace. If the man drew too close, who knew what harm he may do? When he felt he was near enough, Nyiim offered his own cry amidst the woman's shouts: "Hey!"

Immediately the bandit turned to face this new intruder, expression set in a grimace. He was a rather large sort, but Nyiim was larger and hopefully that would help the fact that an archer was best armed for long-range combat and not necessarily the fisticuffs that would be required against a criminal. Bandit and good samaritan both picked up the pace and met some feet from the trapped woman. Nyiim hoped this was enough room for her to escape while he dealt with her attacker. He would undoubtedly come from this battle with a new set of wounds, but nothing a mere dagger strike could deal to him matched the danger to an unarmed woman.

The first move Nyiim made was with a balled fist toward the bandit's jaw. He clocked him good once and was met with a thrust of the dagger for his troubles. Sparring had certainly helped hone Nyiim's dodging skills though as he strafed to the side and missed what might have been a devastating jab to the gut. The bandit swung out again only to meet air and Nyiim took the moment to set his center of balance and heave his weight forward at the other man. The two of them fell to the dirt in a tangle of limbs and Nyiim felt a hard head bash against his nose for his troubles. The first thing he'd have to do would be to disarm the bandit lest he get lucky and make a fatal strike with two bodies in such close quarters. A dagger to the neck or chest could mean a victim meeting their early end out here. All of this in mind, Nyiim reached over and tried to pin the bandit's dominant arm. He was met with considerable resistance, and an attempt to pin the bandit with a knee was met with a hard pitch as the other man tried to gain the upper hand.

The women's shouts seemed to have stopped and Nyiim took this to assume that she had run off. Whether she had gone for help or just escaped didn't much matter as he had this other man to tussle with just now regardless of his victim's plans. Another sound had taken up the missing space, although Nyiim himself barely noticed it for its familiarity. Bosede was barking angrily, unwilling to disobey the command to stay but clearly wanting to help his master while he tangled with a stranger.

With his dominant hand partially immobilized and his attempt to regain control failing, the bandit struck out instead with his free hand, getting Nyiim twice in the head before Nyiim let it fly. He was not a violent man, not by any means, but sometimes violence had to be struck to call an end to a desperate situation. A different, rarer sort of expression stretched across Nyiim's face, less present than the ever-elusive smile or grin. It was rage, adrenaline, a frown and a grimace while he attempted to make mincemeat of the bandit's face. All of the horror he had seen, all of the grief he had held inside, the sense of loss and of helplessness were released into this criminal's flesh and bone and the only reprieve he saw was when he attempted to blindly strike Nyiim in the side with his dagger. The move was not precise, and though it did nick skin it did not stick deeply and so Nyiim ignore the weapon for the moment in favor of beating the bandit into submission. That would be it, the archer thought. Once unarmed the other man would just run off as such folk were wont to do, but instead of any sense of relief, Nyiim felt a sudden heaviness on his back. The surprise was enough to cause him to rear up against the force and only then did he feel the outline of fingers in one shoulder and the sudden pain in the other. He reached back to find a dagger buried fairly soundly into his back just beside a shoulder blade. Had the bandit had backup all along? Were his friends waiting in the trees? Panic struck Nyiim amidst his adrenaline-fueled fury. Was this it? Was he going to die here? He wheeled around to see his new attacker and was horrified to see the young woman who had previously been shouting for help now brandishing her own set of knives against him. A trick. It had all been a trick. There had been no damsel in distress.

The woman was much smaller than himself or the other bandit, but she was quick. Anger was written across her brow as she pitched one of her blades toward Nyiim. The man was able to dodge but only barely, and with a shout the woman rushed him, striking at his chest and wounding him. She raised a knee suddenly then and struck Nyiim in the groin, causing the archer to sputter and collapse while he gasped for air. This might really be it, he thought. His only chance may be to surrender and thus lose his money, his weapons, everything that he had with him which now lay partially scattered across the dirt. In the meantime, the male bandit was able to retrieve his knife and with bloodied nose rose again. Desperate for any sort of defense, Nyiim plucked an arrow from the ground and wheeled around the stab it into the man's chest, eliciting a shout of pain and surprise when the tip buried in muscle. A twin shriek rose up, the woman, running at Nyiim and leaping onto his back. She struck him again with her knife, this time closer to his neck, and the Leaf man cried out in pain, reaching back to try and stop the woman.

What nobody saw was the anxious raptrix bounding toward them, breaking from an order to assist his wounded master. The beast leaped up and took the woman's leg in his mouth, growling and shaking his head wildly. The woman screamed in pain and dropped as her companion tore the arrow from his chest. Bosede's target moved from the woman's leg to her arm and so too did the male bandit's attention shift. He was not so concerned with Nyiim now as he stood bleeding and wounded but on Bosede. The bandit struck out, but the raptrix was quick to release his victim and leap back, catching only the first touch of the blade. Then began the barking again, angry and vicious, threatening the two.

"Forget 'em!" the woman said, standing and beginning to limp off. Her man seemed less willing, but with a second look at Bosede's frothing fangs he turned as well, meeting his woman and helping her to escape. Nyiim might have taken up his bow, might have fired at them were he not in so much pain. Bosede only went so far as to stand before his master and traveled no further, more concerned with Nyiim's defense than his own revenge. The archer watched the couple go and felt all of the anger fall out of him.

What had just happened? He'd been duped, obviously; tricked by a pair of bandits banking on strangers' desire to help a frightened woman. He'd fallen for a simple trick, unable to see through the lies. Of course he knew women could be just as proficient in battle as men, perhaps in different ways but equally as dangerous. Something in him spoke to the man in telling him that women were somehow more delicate, though. More gentle. Clearly he had been wrong. He had been ready and willing to strike the woman if he'd needed to to defend himself, but Bosede had taken over for him in that respect. When women came streaming toward him in battle he would gladly fire into them, but this? This had been one-on-one, very close combat, and somehow it just didn't feel right. He might have easily overpowered such a small body, and then what? Beaten her face in like her beau? No, he wouldn't have been able to, he didn't think. So would he have given up and offered the grand majority of his worldly possessions simply because one of his attackers had breasts? She had been armed, she had stabbed him twice, and without his companion's help me might have lost to his own moral code.

For a moment Nyiim just sat, face in his hands, trembling slightly. His world had unraveled a bit if just for a few minutes of brawling. So supplies might have to wait. He would need a healer, and soon. He gathered the arrows that had fallen back into his quicker, retrieved as much coin as he cared to dig for in the brush, and walked off holding the wound in his side while Bosede stood loyally by, watching for any more threats. The two shared a glance as they walked toward town together, the most wounded they had ever been.
