Premise: They say that if you die in your dreams that you will die for real. This has been proven to be false. But what eludes the boundaries of proof is that some part of you falls into the dream world for good. And in the dream world, reality can be highly subjective.

Purpose: To bring your characters into a world where the 'usual' rules do not apply. It is an opportunity for them to face their fears, or perhaps achieve their goals, only to have it taken away from them as the landscape changes.

OOC Rules: (partially borrowed from Character Cafe)

1. Show respect to everyone! Your character may be a villain, but you aren't.
2. ToS applies here. If it's against ToS, don't do it.
3. Be literate. Type in sentences. Use quotation marks.
4. Double bracketing OOC speech is the standard. ((OOC: Like this.))
5. Single character rule: Please only bring in one at a time. It is both easier to track and makes more sense with the premise...unless your characters somehow share the same dream space.
6. Work together; if you're not sure how something will go, PM/OOC discuss with the other people involved. It's better to slow the RP rather than have noses out of joint.
7. Avoid too much meta-gaming; let people decide the responses of their own characters.
Suggestion: Try bolding character names as you use them so people can keep track more easily.

World Rules:

1. Characters do not immediately know they are in a dream world. How quickly they learn this depends on their personality, knowledge, and what happens to them.
2. The world grows/changes based on the minds of the characters, such as what can be found in the buildings. (The clock tower is immune.)
3. Exception to rule 2: You cannot simply un-create what someone has created. You could destroy it with a fireball, for example, but you can't just will other things to not exist.
4. Imagination and self-awareness are key. Powers are an expression of the person's psyche, and how well a character knows him/herself and how strong his/her mind is, the more powers can expand.
5.The use of powers is not immediately intuitive; it must be discovered by/taught to each new character.
6. Powers come from two sources: yearning and reflection. Yearning indicates what a person wants to be. Reflection indicates what a person knows about him/herself. Typically those who are insecure/envious/aimless have stronger yearning, while those who are confident/introspective/determined have stronger Reflection.
7. Power strength is relative to time spent in the Dreamscape; those who have been here longer naturally have a greater power base than those who are newly arrived.

Examples:
- Someone with a lot of anger may use fire. However, if someone is known for having a 'cold' temper, this might manifest as ice. Likewise if someone is quick to anger, but equally quick to calm down, this may manifest as lightning.
- Someone with a nurturing personality may manifest with healing powers. Similarly, if someone is nurturing and protective, they may have the ability to create force fields.
- People who consider themselves close to nature are likely to manifest the ability to control plant life or animals, perhaps even summon animals.
- People who have calm, stoic personalities may be able to shape the earth, or objects made from a certain material.
- People who consider themselves overlooked or insignificant may have the ability to become invisible.
- Those who are insecure about their appearances may have the ability to charm others, or appear beautiful. Conversely, they might also manifest the ability to create fear in others or change into a creature with a monstrous aspect.

Note: If there are any questions, or anything is unclear, please let me know. I want this to be workable, and I don't want to seem heavy handed, but I wanted the setting to be accessible to most characters while not being too close to the Character Cafe setting. If there's anything you think would improve this idea, let me know. I might not take every suggestion, but I'd like to think I'm open minded.

Setting:

You find yourself in a hazy world where things seem to shift out of the corner of your eye, only to have done no such thing when you turn to look at them. Ahead of you a road stretches towards a town. When you glance behind you, you see what appears to be the exact same town. Flanking you on either side is a green field that eventually merges into a forest, but how far away the trees are seem vague in your mind.

Approaching the town you will find a cluster of buildings that are almost monochrome in color, though anything made of metal seems to retain its color and glints sharply through the haze. The most prominent structure is a tall bell tower in the center of town, attached to some sort of meeting hall. It rings as though hourly, but if someone were to count, the timing would prove to be off. Further examination would show there is no bell cord.

The other buildings are divided between residential and commerce. The residences look almost identical to each other, and the numbers on them shift regularly. Looking inside any of them, one sees what one expects to see. The same goes for the commerce, which seem to turn into whatever type of shop one is thinking of at the time. Only the Clock Tower building seems to be stable.

Cytheria found herself standing in the middle of a road. It was dusk, the world dimming in the faint gold and prominent blues of the sky just after the sun sets. Somehow she expected it to be brighter; she knew that when she had gone to bed it had been full night. It didn't make sense that it was almost night again. Where did the day go?

But the thought is quickly lost from her mind, flowing away like some small object in the steady flow of a river. The haziness of the air seems to seep into her mind, muddling her thinking so that she no longer debated with herself as to how she got her, or that the time didn't seem right.

Instead she focused on the road she stood on. In the distance was a town, and that seemed like the best place to go. At least there would be something to focus on other than the trees to her left and right, or the pavement under her shoes. When had she put on shoes? Again, the thought is soon submerged in the haze. Putting one foot in front of the other, she heads for the town.

Sheridan jumped at the sight of the road she had suddenly realized she stood on, the smooth pavement almost scraping the bottoms of her bare feet as she minced along. The faint gold and harsh blues of the sky seemed to be the only light, so Sheridan sped up her pace into a n**. Her footfalls made a thudding noise on each step, and Sheridan winced at the sound. She hoped to be the only person here as she looked around wildly behind her and to either side of her. Only then did it occur to her that there might be a car somewhere on the road, and that it might be better to walk in the field.

She gingerly dipped a toe into the crunchy and almost cold grass but pulled back when she saw a thorn. Instead, she opted to walk close to the grass rather than in it. She would have to explore later.

Close to the town, Sheridan noticed another person. Unsure of what to say to the woman, she slows her pace just enough to keep a healthy distance from her. She held her breath and attempted to quiet her feet.

Ahead, the other woman keeps to a steady pace, so it's not hard to keep at a safe distance away. From behind there isn't much to see about her. However, she's wearing a green dress over top of a cream blouse; it looks like something that would be seen centuries ago. Her hair is a light blonde color with a hint of red in it, braided halfway down her back and then left to hang loose to her waist in soft, unhindered waves. Anything else about her will be hard to discern since her face is still pointed forwards.

Sheridan stops as soon as she catches a glimpse at the colorless buildings that made up part of the city. She looks down at the pavement, intertwining her hands repetitively.

"Excuse me," she said to the woman.

She winced at her stutter, but more importantly, she didn't want to go into that city alone. The ground caught her gaze again, and she couldn't help but look away from the woman.

With the sound of a voice coming from behind her, Cytheria turns around. "Oh, hello," she says with a faint smile and a curtsy that seems more a motion of habit rather than a conscious effort at humility. She is a pretty enough young woman, probably in her late teens. Her eyes are a soft shade of blue-green that is reminiscent of spring or summer. A few curls, having sprung free from her braid, framed her face. And though she seems startled to see another person here, she doesn't give the impression of being afraid, merely curious. "It's a strange sort of road, isn't it?" she asks politely.

Sheridan's hand flew to her face to cover her mouth in surprise as the woman curtsied her. Unsure if she should return the curtsey, she pressed on.

"I don't want to go into that town alone," Sheridan said quietly. "Can I go with you?"

Her hand slowly fell from over her mouth and rested at her side. Her eyes trailed down to meet her feet once again, but instead, a glimmer caught her attention. Upon inspection, she realized she was wearing a flouncy dress that fell just above her knees in a glittering plum color. She reached up to touch her light brown, nearly blonde hair, suddenly aware of the tickle along her back from it. Her bangs fell short of her green eyes, and she didn't have her usual ponytails. She felt a little naked in front of this woman; Sheridan wrapped her hands around her body.

The lack of a curtsy doesn't through the other young woman off at all. She smiles kindly to Sheridan. "Of course. I was feeling a little bit uneasy about it myself, but it seems to be the only place to go." She makes a gesture to invite the other girl to walk along with her. "My name is Cytheria," she says; quite likely the name will ring as foreign in Sheridan's ears. "The place does look quite ominous."
PostPosted: Fri Jun 19, 2015 3:34 pm

Sheridan stepped forward to walk alongside the strange woman. She held her hands in front of her body, clasped together, as she trotted along the road.

"My name is Sheridan," she said softly. "It's nice to meet you. Wherever we are."

Cytheria sounded like a screen name someone might use online, Sheridan thought. Could she be lying about her real name? Should I have lied about my name?

Fast approaching the entrance of the city, Sheridan's stomach fluttered with unease, and her palms began to sweat. She swallowed back fear as she gazed up at the colorless buildings.

"What is this place, Cytheria?"

((OOC: It's entirely up to you. I'm good either way though. Which do you prefer?))

"Pleased to meet you too," Cytheria said, still looking at Sheridan. She had given no hesitation when saying her name, and didn't seem nervous about telling it. There weren't any particular signs that she was trying to obscure her identity or be deceitful. Looking forward again, she shrugs her shoulders. "I don't know; I've never seen any place like this. It's not my old home town, or my new one."

As they get closer it will become apparent that this little town is far from thriving. Or, rather, they haven't seen anyone so far. There don't seem to be any people milling about, as one would expect from a town. It's reminiscent of a ghost town. Feeling a sense of desolation, Cytheria draws just a little closer to Sheridan.
