NIGHT, PATH, FIRE

FIRE

Weary eyes heavy from a deep sleep, bright red peeked from the dark lids, his limbs felt tired, exhausted, broken tail languidly feeling the ground. It was hot, too hot. He was used to the deserts punishments, the sun making the sand feel like they were coals, working day and night with only a sip of water in him, and the acha didn't mind that. But this was a different heat.

Finally he moved his head, a bright light of fire lighting his dark pelt, eyes opening completely now in surprise of the fire so nearby. Yet he wasn't scared, it was comforting. As it was from fire he was born into this world, he would always touch and feel her welcoming flames and he knew he would be alright. It almost felt like he was going back into those flames, back into the darkness. He was darkness. He once was lost in it, not a friend of the fire but consumed by it, all its rage and pride.

But not anymore.

There was so much more fear in his chest when he remembered his Ascent, his light, his one. Would she be here? He had hoped not, perhaps the flames wouldn't be as kind to her -- he'd burn and walk into any flame himself in her place. He winced at this strange pain but he got on his legs, looking around with his stitched mouth, everywhere the bright roaring fire surrounding him as if telling him, this was his home now, this is where he came from, this is where he belonged.

"No."

He said in a gritted tone, eyes serious and expression calm. This was his home before, this place was how he came upon this world, the MotherFather knew that, and he knew that. But it wasn't where he belonged.

"Ascent.. Ascent..." he hummed her name like a prayer.

NIGHT

Blackness. The acha always had good sight in the dark but in this case it was very hard to see anything at all. He looked down, he hardly could see his legs moving, walking for what felt like days and days end. He hated not knowing where he was. Yet the darkness reminded him so of himself, once lost, eyes shielded, other kin could not 'see' him. Feared and left alone because of how he looked and what he seemed to represent. But he was far from 'Death' itself. He was merely one who maintained balance, saw to it that life and death were equal. Yet still all who he had encountered averted their gaze, fled, Descent was alone for a long time.

And then as if it was always there, the stars shone brightly on him, the moon coming out to guide him, Dark Descent looking upwards and blinded a little by the light. He always liked the dark better, really. But this way he could see where his hooves met and there was a clearer look to what he was doing.

PATH

The path was illuminated by the moonlight then, behind him was ashes and the faint smell of burning wood -- and in front of him was the moon itself, the path clear and even, slowly seeing budding flowers come into bloom as he looked at them. He was never one for flowers, never one for --- making things grow. He had always thought of death and rebirth, but being with his lifemate made him understand growth more. And ... the flowers were beautiful.

And slowly the path stretched out, seeming like he had to walk for years to get to where the end was. But somehow he felt comforted -- not like the feeling he had with the flames -- this felt like moving forward, moving on from the past, moving on to a bigger hope.

PATH

The path was long and winding, and indeed it did feel long-- too long. Descent's chest was aching from 'homesickness'. But the flowering blooms helped, delicate reds and pinks, opening as he looked and touched them. Even for a moment laid on a bed of them to rest his head for this never ending journey. The flowers even smelled faintly of his love.

Twisting turns and monumental bridges, staircases and ramps that go down into the darkness, he'd walk through every obstacle or path of fire to get home. He was once alone, content to be that way. Never meeting any living kin's eyes was alright. But he had a home. His home. It was his insistent prayer.

FIRE

He woke up once again, groggy and limbs weak, lifting his head quicker and looking around. A circle of flowers had encircled him, and at the edge a few blossoms that seemed to want to lead him somewhere. They shook, gently danced to the wind, encouraging him. And with his thin limbs he walked slowly, bright red eyes looking into this void.

And then a beautiful lake, shimmering, sparkling, it was peaceful -- and then in the middle a small flame floating atop the clear water.

Then, fire.

But this fire was light, it was bright and it did not feel scalding or hot against him. His eyes squinted as the fire died down as quick as it had started and right in the middle of where the flame was... It was more beautiful than he could put into words or comprehend, a swan of green and gentle oranges, decorated in those pink blossoms that had guided him all this time to this place. He gasped, hooves hitting the water, the swan smiled at him and he knew who it was.

And he was back home.
