"Do you best today!" Zin told the liepard at her side. Zebo purred and rubbed his head against his trainer's hip before leaping into his place on the field. Zinnia stepped right up to the edge of her podium and rested her hands on its rails. Battles always excited her, and she was eager to begin.

"We've never battled a liepard before," said Emalthya to Pheonix. "Good luck, I'm sure you'll do very well."
Pheonix rubbed his head against hers and flew from the trainer's overlook to the stadium, landing with a sickening thud. He would save a lick for his trainer's face when he had finished and she wasn't expecting it.

Zinnia's eyes nearly popped out of her head at the sight of the charizard. "W-wow!" she exclaimed. "Your charizard is AMAZING!"
Below on the field, Zebo shot his trainer an offended look. He was way more amazing and handsome than any other pokemon, charizards included!

"Thank you!" called Emalthya and Pheonix dipped his head to accept the compliment. "Your liepard looks very strong, too!"
"Good," said Emalthya, trying to focus. "First move is ours." More loudly, she instructed, "Pheonix, use heat wave!"
Pheonix inhaled deeply and let out a blistering tongue of heat which spread from side to side as he turned his head to engulf as much of the arena as possible.

"Dodge it and use Shadow Claw!" Zinnia shouted.
Zebo saw the heat wave coming and ran at top speed around it. He continued his sprint all the way until he reached the huge dragonlike pokemon, and raked at Phoenix with his claws.

((12 is a critical hit, does that make it double damage to 200?))
Pheonix barely saw Zebo run at him and as soon as he realised the liepard was right beside him, he felt ghost claws striking his belly. He broke off his heat wave with a roar.
Trying to tamp down her indignation on behalf of her pokemon, Emalthya called out; "You claw him right back, Pheonix! Dragon claw!"
Pheonix swung his forearm down at the leopard pokemon, standing right beside him. The move couldn't miss.

((Yes. 1-2 is a miss and 10-12 is double damage for Shadow Claw.))
The claw hit Zebo hard, knocking him back.
"Use Shadow Claw again!" Zin said.
The liepard wasn't too keen on continuing close-quarters contact with the charizard, but he didn't have much choice otherwise. He sprang forward again.

"Jump, Pheonix," called Emalthya urgently. "Get into the air and avoid it!"
Pheonix threw himself upwards and snapped his leathery wings open, shading the stadium floor with his wingspan, avoiding the attack.
Emalthya sighed with relief. "Now use solarbeam!"
It was risky, given that Pheonix was flying and unable to properly aim, but Emalthya thought it was worth the risk to avoid being in striking distance of the liepard.
Of course, he had only revealed one of his moves, thought Emalthya, worrying her bottom lip. He could know jump, or thunder. We'll see, we'll see...
Pheonix opened his jaws to roar while absorbing sunlight, then the roar became the roar of energy as a green solarbeam erupted from between his jaws, his head jerking forwards to release it.

The attack scorched Zebo, leaving him yowling in pain.
"Zebs!" Zin cried in dismay. She considered recalling him-- taking two critical hits in a row had to hurt-- but the liepard showed no sign of being willing to give up. With a worried sigh, she commanded, "Shadow Claw!"
Zebo leaped again, hoping to hit his target this time.

Zebo leaped just high enough to gouge at Pheonix's hovering tail. Pheonix roared and the extra weight caused him to lose height and he landed.
"That's fine," called out Emalthya. "Now that you're on the ground, use earthquake!"
Pheonix shook his head rapidly to clear it and he hefted himself up in the air for a short distance, then he closed his wings and hurled himself to the ground, slamming into it and causing the floor to crack and split in channels towards Zebo.

Emalthya blinked and looked confused. Would this trainer ever use another attack? This didn't seem like much of a strategy to her.
"Well," she began hesitantly. It was hard to counter a strategy that made no sense to her, but she would have to try. "Back to basics for us, too! Pheonix, use Heat Wave!"
Pheonix shook off the latest Shadow Claw attack and drew himself up straight, inflating his lungs as full as possible and then he expelled a vast cloud of fire spreading further as it rolled across the stadium, devouring oxygen and exploding outward.
Emalthya was too preoccupied with the outcome of the attack to wipe off the perspiration dripping down her face from the intense flame and hot air.

The liepard winced as he was blasted by the heat, then opened his mouth in a wide yawn.

"It knows yawn!?" yelped Emalthya. Please go back to using the same direct attack! We can't fight a status condition! I'm so relieved it didn't take.
"That was a good attack, Pheonix, now try solarbeam again!"
Pheonix swept himself up on his great wings to absorb sunlight enough to create the powerful solarbeam energy jet and let it loose.
