The night air felt like it was charged with energy, and unbeknownst to a particular matori girl there was a grand celebration occurring in her home. As she approaches her home she will discover the noise and numerous people that seemed to be hanging about were all apart of the same party. People she barely knew were giving her a congratulations and offering her life advice though they were vague enough in their greetings for the poor girl to figure out what it was they were all talking about.
It was when her mother burst through the door, upon spotting her daughter she grabbed her hands and pulled her inside. Complaining she wasn't dressed appropriately and that she needed to go back out and properly address the people who had come out of their way to give their blessings. Upon asking why all these people were here, her mother would simply smile and exclaim, "For your Engagement silly!"

Part 1: Surprise!
Sriina felt the weight of the bags in her hands. She had been out all day shopping for supplies to get ready to begin her travels with Amari. She hadn’t felt this good in… well really she couldn’t remember feeling this good ever. When she had been freed as a slave, it had been a happy time for sure, but she also had the worry in the back of her mind of what her life would be like after such a drastic change to anything she had ever known. With every step she took she also felt the newly added weight of her sword at her side. It was an interesting addition to her person to be sure, and not one she was altogether sure she would need, but she wasn’t so overconfident to think that she wouldn’t have some inherent enemies just from the color of her skin. It made for an overabundance of contemplation on her life until this point and her status, and now the added consideration of her travels. But at least the travels put a lighter twist on her one person conversation.
Her mind took her off into her own thoughts as she walked, not really seeing where she was going, but knowing the path as she continue to think about the nuances of the events that had brought her here. She was so caught up in herself that she barely noticed the trickle of voices coming from ahead of her, that continued to ramp up to a dull roar the closer she was to home. By the time she lifted her head from the bags she was holding, she not only was in full view of her house, but also in full view of the crowd of people that seemed to fill its insides and spilled outside. She slowed, her steps faltering until she came to a complete stop. The people in her house weren’t many that she could recognize, and the commotion and clamor had her ears ringing. She noticed one guest in particular had made eye contact, and without really knowing the reason why, the man stopped midsentence with the woman he was talking to and shouted something about her being here. Well of course she would be here, this was her house. Sriina was confused, and more than a little uncomfortable already with the invasion of her home.
She tentatively took another step closer to her house, her fingers clenched tight to the bags she was still carrying when her mother seemed to burst through the front door and into the open air. ”Sriina! Oh good, you’re home!” She called out, waving her hand to draw her daughter in. ”Come come! We’ve all been waiting!”
Sriina jerked her head back, her brows furrowing. Waiting? Sriina snaked her way forward, trying to avoid coming too close to any of the guests, but they seemed to be seeking her out. She heard shouts of ‘Congratulation!’ And ‘We’re so happy for you!’ And the like, with the mumbling of other words Sriina just couldn’t really focus on. She reached her mother and she immediately took hold of Sriina’s arm and began tugging her through the house and to the stairs, nearly pushing her all the way up. ”Well go on! You’re not dressed for the party, Sriina.” She could barely get a word in edgewise as she was hustled into her room and her mother closed the door behind her.
She spun on the spot, looking to her mother with utter confusion on her face. ”Mother… what am I supposed to be dressing for? Who are all these people?” Sriina could think of an infinite number of questions to follow, but before she could speak again her mother was already in mid-sentence. ”For your engagement silly!”

Part 2: Party Guests
Sriina had never known what it meant to have ‘the ground shift from under her’ but she did now. She felt her stomach drop, her eyes not really focusing on anything and the room almost seemed to tilt. She didn’t think such a colloquial could have a physical presence, but she was learning fast that this one was true to its word. ”I… don’t think I heard you right.” She managed to draw out.
”Oh you heard me right. Your father and I finally found you a husband! Aren’t you excited? You’ll be great together. I’m sure you must remember him. That childhood friend of yours: Kyruie. The two of you were such cute children, I’m sure you’ll make each other happy.” She continued on, and - to Sriina - making things worse.
Sriina lowered herself onto her bed, taking in the words that just streamed from her mother’s mouth with ease. Kyruie? Was it coincidence that she had just met his older brother in the market then, or was that a set up by her mother now too? She was confused, with a hint of betrayal settling in. But then she felt the sickening dread pool up inside of her as she realized what it meant for her future. Amari. She… wouldn’t be able to go anywhere with Amari now. Her sword would clang uselessly against her leg as she realized it would mean a life of being a housewife, strapped to her husband’s side.
Her mother was oblivious, already pulling her an ‘acceptable’ outfit from her closet and rushing to get it on Sriina. Sriina felt herself recoiling from her reality, going through motions of dressing and trying to take in what was going on around her. Her mother had her dressed and out the door to her waiting guests before she could come up with the words to protest.
Already they were surrounding her at the base of the stairs. A cheer rang out as they saw the bride-to-be emerge, and many hands began to touch and prod and congratulatory clap her on the back. Women were petting her hair, men were giving her a supportive pat, both were hugging and touching. Sriina recoiled from the attention. The physical interactions with all of the guests making her skin crawl. She didn’t know these people. Every touch came with unsolicited advice. The men made sure to tell her how important it was to be able to feed her husband. Some of the women chimed in with recipes that were sure to keep him happy and things to avoid in the kitchen. All of the women gave her the rest of the advice, ranging from anything that could be imagined: from housekeeping and homemaking, to keeping her husband happy, to children. ”Now if you rub your belly with a mixture from the nomoda root every day, you’ll be sure to have a boy.” One woman leaned in to tell her, reaching for her stomach and rubbing like she was showing Sriina how. Her hands came up in reaction, jumping back and away from her touch. The woman and those around her laughed and chuckled as if Sriina was being cute. Sriina on the other hand did not find it quite so adorable. She felt her muscles stiffen. She didn’t know how much longer she could take, and the party continued to drag on. It was as if every person in that cramped house had to have his or her hands on her at some point during the night. And the presents. It seemed that half of the guests had come bearing gifts for the happy couple. Or at least for her. She couldn’t help but wonder if her betrothed even knew about the engagement yet, or if he would be blindsided as well. A part of her wondered if maybe he had suggested it, if he was in on it.
Sriina was halfway through the crowd of people, the list of advice and the pile of pre-wedding presents growing larger before she even noticed that her mother had disappeared from her side. She had been there, beaming the entire time, but had somehow slinked off in the midst of the hugging. Sriina craned her neck, trying to see where it was her mother went and how she could possibly get away herself. Maybe to lie down, or to pull her hair out, she hadn’t decided which.
But her mother had come back, and just when Sriina didn’t think that she could have handled any more, she saw what it was her mother was carrying. She had held out like it was something precious, a large white dress. Sriina dropped the present she was holding as the crowd quieted and her mother cheered. ”Your father and I wanted to give you our wedding gift to you: my dress from our wedding.” She glowed as she said it and the crowd parted to make way for her, cheering and shouting another round of congratulations. Sriina felt the weight of the dress as it was laid onto her hands, but she couldn’t really feel anything anymore. She needed to be alone. She needed space. She looked to her mother with panic in her eyes and her mother returned the look with concern. She put her hands on Sriina’s shoulders and leaned in for a hug. ”Don’t worry, you’ll look beautiful in it.” She whispered to Sriina, seeming to completely miss the reason for her panic.

Part 3: Too Late
The party seemed to die down after the big unveiling of her present, the guests leaving in herds now that all had been said and Sriina had been thoroughly shaken. Once the last of the guest had left, Sriina carefully put the wedding dress down across a chair, pulling her hands away like the cloth could catch fire at any time, and she looked to her mother and father. Her father didn’t really seem to be feeling one way or the other, his face was more so a look of boredom and relief that the party was over, but her mother - her mother was looking to Sriina like she held the promise of a beautiful life in her very being. Sriina backed away from the dress, trying to put more space between her and the news. ”I can’t do this.” She rattled out, her voice feeling lost over the white noise in her head.
”Of course you can Sriina, and you will.” Her father finally said. Sriina was more than confused at their teaming against her.
”No. I won’t. I was going to leave. I was going to get out and see the world beyond Oba. You can’t make me.” She nearly pleaded to her parents.
Her mother was the one to speak up now, some of the hurt showing on her face. ”We did this for you Sriina. Now please do this for us. Kyruie is a nice boy Sriina, and you need normal in your life after all that you’ve had so far. This will be good for you.”
Sriina shook her head. ”This won’t be good for me. How could this possibly be good for me?” She argued back, her voice not quite as demanding as it needed to be, but as much as she could manage. Her mother shook her head and closed the distance between the two of them.
”You’ll do this. You’ll do it for us, for your parents.”
Sriina set her mouth in a firm line. She didn’t see a choice in the matter now. The news had gone public before she had even known herself. Her mother had seen to that. And now she had to wonder if her mother had planned it that way, knowing that she couldn’t refuse if the entire town knew about the engagement. She thought of Ashta again, of her brief encounter with him and the promise of a new life, and the way it was snagged away from her. She felt dejected, mentally beaten, and worn out. She looked to both of her parents faces and felt her shoulders sag.
Her mother hugged her - the last physical contact she was willing to allow for today if not for a while - and felt her hair being brushed back from her face. ”It’ll all be fine darling.”
She couldn’t see how it would be fine, but she knew it would happen anyways.
