She was excited.
Okay more than just a little excited. After all, she was now considered an 'adult', right?! Er, well, she tried to argue this. But her parents tended to just roll their eyes at her and go about their business. However they had been very pleased when their youngest child had gotten accepted into Destiny City University. Or maybe they were just ready to have the house to themselves? There was no telling with them.
However Kodi Carpenter really didn't mind much. Because she was getting her own little apartment (possibly with a roommate in the future, but that was for later consideration) and freedom! No parentals to tell her she was collecting too many 'toys' (they were collectors editions!). Or nagging at her to take down the obnoxious posters she'd hang on her wall. It hadn't been the posters in general that got to them. No it had been the fact she had three different versions of the same poster up on one wall. Or something. She had a slight obsession. She knew it. And was proud of it.
Anyways... Kodi was excited about today in particular because a little unbeknownst to her older brother, her campus housing was close to where he lived. And she was going to pay big brother a visit! Plus, she hadn't seen Magiore for a while and kind of missed having him around. At least he didn't baby her. All the time.
Checking the sheet of paper she'd scribbled down directions on, Kodi found herself reading apartment numbers before stopping in front of one particular door. This was it! She was going to surprise her brother and tell him the good news about getting into the university (unless mom had told him already). With a big smile on her face, she knocked at Magiore's door. And waited. Semi-patiently.

Magiore, having yet to move in with Durumi's place, was still in his loft for the time being. Everything looked exactly as it had when he'd first moved in, things carefully set in place, all the furniture pristine and taken care of. The decorations were minimal at best, but what few that showed were black or white, modern in design and most likely not resembling anything in particular.
The man in question currently sat on the sleek leather couch in his living room, feet propped up on the glass-topped coffee table in front of him, a book in hand. There was an empty cup of tea in his other hand, which Magiore was now setting down so that he could tun a page, eyes moving quickly to read the words.
It was an old, battered copy of one of his Sherlock Holmes books, and he was completely engrossed in it - which meant that Magiore didn't actually hear that someone was knocking on his door for the first several seconds. When he finally managed to drag himself back into focus, it became much more apparent.
He gave a sigh. Magiore folded the book neatly, stuck a bookmark in it, and got to his feet, padding to the door, swinging it open.
He took one look at the person on the other side and promptly closed it again.

It was because she was wearing her Hobbit shirt, wasn't it?
"RUDE!" She called through the door, knocking again. To be annoying. He knew she was here. And not going away. Nope.
Kodi huffed at the door, finally crossing her arms and just staring at it, picturing her brother standing on the other side. Or he'd already walked away to go back to what he was doing. Stubborn. That was the Carpenter kids.
"Mags, really? You're going to let your little sister sit out here all alone? What if I get mugged? Huh?" She was leaning against his door now, waving at a few people that walked by. "That means you'll have to tell mom."
She wondered if anyone in the complex here was doing some house cleaning? Another bookshelf would be nice. Speaking of books, she needed to find a new copy of The Hobbit. She may have read that one too many times it was literally falling apart. Which made her sad, as it was her favorite book.
Maybe after this she would go grab a new copy and sit down to read with a cup of tea.
"Maaaaaaaags!"

In spite of having talked to her every once in a while, Magiore had so far avoided seeing his sister in any way, shape, or form, since he'd left the home he'd grown up in almost five years prior. It wasn't that he disliked her, or hated her; but Kodi had a certain personality about her that was sometimes...overbearing.
That, and there were times when she just drove him crazy.
He stood on the other side of the door and inhaled a breath, Magiore pinching the bridge of his nose as he tried to figure out the best course of action. There was no telling what she would do if she came in - probably knock over and touch things she shouldn't - but he also couldn't leave her outside forever.
The other reason for the hesitation was simple; Kodi knew nothing about his entire second identity, and Magiore planned to keep it that way. It was safer, after all.
He finally swung the door open again, forcing a smile that was obviously forced.
"Kodi," said Magiore pleasantly, which wasn't very pleasant. "How lovely to see you."
The sarcasm could not have been more obvious.

The click of the door knob turning was her warning to stop leaning against said door as it finally opened. Kodi looked up behind her, seeing the forced smile her brother gave her. Really, he needed to learn how to treat his visitors better.
"Funny, I don't get that impression." She said lightly, spinning around on her heels to give her brother a good look over. It had been a while since she actually got to see him. Was it so difficult to come visit? She'd missed him. But she got the feeling he didn't feel the same way. At least not at the moment.
Brothers.
"Y'know you haven't called for a while." Kodi reminded him, then ignored the sarcasm and clear 'go away' vibe she was getting to hug him. It was her duty as a little sister to ignore such vibes anyways. "Or bothered to come say hi and visit. Do you even know that I graduated High School? That I'm starting college?"
He probably lived under a rock, so she wasn't holding her breath.
While still hugging him, she peeked around him to glance in his apartment, lips twitching. Everything was so pristine and orderly. Not at all like her tiny apartment. Which didn't mean she was messy or lived in chaos. Magiore was just... tidier. Plain and simple.
"Are you going to invite me in?" She asked, looking up into blue eyes exactly like her own. "Please?" Cute smile activate!

It wasn't that he disliked Kodi; in fact, Magiore loved his sister as much as anyone could, and he had been a doting brother while the two of them had grown up together. But he'd left his family. He'd learned to live on his own, learned to do his own thing, and now he was a member of an organization, one that was extremely important to him in many ways. He couldn't possibly get Kodi involved in that.
He almost stepped back in time, but his sister's arms were around him before he could move away. Magiore stiffened under her grasp and then sighed, relenting, reaching out to gingerly pat her shoulder and give her a return embrace - albeit a slightly less squashy one, and he let go rather quickly.
"I can't believe you're starting college already," he grumbled, stepping away from Kodi and leaning back against the doorframe. "Last I checked, you were still six years old."
He waffled about whether or not he should let her in - the consequences far outweighed the pros, but there was little choice, and besides, Kodi was his baby sister, regardless of the life he lived now. Magiore ground his teeth together and then sighed, taking a step to the side and gesturing for her to come in.
"Don't touch anything you're not supposed to."

Kodi shot her brother an annoyed expression that only made the way her face scrunch up appear cute. "I am not six years old! You're just turning into an old man." She replied, poking at him. "Do you even remember how old I am? Or is that something that old man brain of yours forgot?"
There may have been a smile twitching at her lips.
"As for college... it's kind of scary, but exciting at the same time." She admitted, handing reaching up to toy with strands of her hair. "I've got all my stuff though. And a new apartment." Kodi paused, peering past him. "Just... not quite as big as this." She figured it was about twice the size of a college dorm room, but it was affordable for a college freshman. "You should come see it sometime."
Finally he stepped aside and allowed her to enter. She wasn't stupid, though, and could see the reluctance in it. But Kodi just figured it was a brother thing. And his baby sister was poaching on his territory now.
And, of course, since he just had to say something, the first thing she did was nudge something ever so slightly out of place. "Oh, you mean like that?" She asked innocently before spying a particular book laying out where he must have been reading when she arrived. It made her smile.
"What part are you at?" She asked, pointing at his warn out book.

He gave her a flat look.
"You're still six," said Magiore, though the old man comment made a muscle in his jaw flex, annoyance flickering across his expression. With an exasperated sigh, he closed the door behind Kodi as she stepped in, leaning back against it and wondering if there was still a way around this whole thing.
"Go and see you...at your university?" he asked, slightly surprised by the invitation, regardless. "Well...I suppose maybe I could stop by sometime. Do you have a roommate, or will you be living alone?"
Crucial and important questions for someone living a double life. Magiore pushed himself away from the door and made his way into the kitchen, dark hair spilling down his back in elegant curls. He cast a glance over his shoulder at Kodi, and then immediately regretted this, because he could see her pushing something out of the way.
He glared at her pointedly.
"Sherlock's just fallen down the waterfall to fake his own death," said Magiore delicately, not mentioning the fact that she'd just touched something immediately after he'd told her not to.
"Tea?"

Did she see the way his jaw flexed and the annoyance flickered across his face. Why yes. Yes she did. And it only made her grin as she entered his space. Her gaze took in everything, surprised at how homey it felt. Maybe because it reminded her of when he still lived at home?
"Well, where else would you come see me?" Kodi asked in exasperation, twirling around to regard her brother again. "It's not easy staying at home now that I'm going to the Uni." She added before a strange look crossed her face briefly and disappeared under a sheepish smile. "Ah... right now, I'm alone. But I want to try and find a roommate soon!" The last bit was sort of rushed, as if she didn't want him dwelling on the fact she lived alone.
Oh look, he caught her doing something she was told not too. Kodi just gave him one of her typical bright grins.
"Good part, then." She murmured, easily distracted by mention of 'tea'. Kodi laughed, "Mags, I wouldn't be a Carpenter if I said no to tea! Yes please!" She danced around the kitchen before parking herself against the cabinets. "How have you been, brother?" She finally asked, curious to what her big brother had been up to.

"In the circus," Magiore muttered under his breath as he opened a cabinet. He reached in and pulled down a small wooden box, setting it on the counter. When he opened it up, several dozen teabags were visible, lined neatly in order of taste.
"Do you have a preference for tea?" he asked, without turning around, because he had feeling if he did, he'd only see Kodi messing with some of his other things. Magiore plucked out an Earl Grey for himself and then rummaged around for teacups.
"Wait - " he twisted a little, casting her a sharp glance over his shoulder. "You live alone? Isn't that a little unsafe?"
As much as he was resistant to her visiting, Kodi was still his little sister, and the last thing Magiore wanted was for her to be harmed. He took the teapot over to the sink and began filling it, the sound of the water a strangely reassuring sound.
"I'm fine," he answered her, entirely noncommittally. "I haven't been doing much since I graduated, just working a little here and there."
And performing my duties as a Negaverse Captain for a secret underground organization.

The look she tossed at her brother hinted that he probably hadn't muttered soft enough. But then, she was used to hearing that one. "Something slightly stronger than your Earl Grey." She replied after a minute, having seen his choice while looking around his apartment. And no, Magiore, she was not touching anything else.
At least not yet.
Having stopped exploring to watch him go about making tea, Kodi had no place to hide from the look he cast over his shoulder. Okay so of course he'd caught that bit. She fidgeted a little, not looking at him and instead looking off to the side like it was no big deal. "Well the place was one of the recommended buildings by the Uni. So I'd think it was safe." She had no idea, actually. Researching that bit had not been something she'd done.
Really, she'd just been happy to get out on her own and try to prove to everyone she was and adult now. Instead of the little girl they all seemed to see her as still.
Kodi rolled her eyes at his noncommittal answer. "Sounds like being a grown up is boring. Yet strangely fitting for you." Yeah, she was calling you boring, that little smile sneaking up again.

"Fine," he said dryly, giving Kodi and eagle-eyed stare as she sat in his living room, wondering if she was going to go about doing things that she shouldn't - which really should have been the title of her autobiography. Kodi was always nosing about where she shouldn't.
Which was why he had not told her of his identity, why he had disappeared in the first place.
"Just...be careful," said Magiore with a frown before he turned back to the tea. "I don't like the idea of you being all alone. Make sure you keep some mace with you at all times, or maybe a baseball bat by your bed or something. Just...don't be careless, all right?"
He knew she was an adult, but that was not going to stop him from Big Brother-ing her anyway. Magiore put the kettle on the stove top.
"Did you just call me dull?" he asked with a snort, flipping on the fire. "Does this mean you've been doing other interesting things since I last saw you?"

She tried not to fidget at his frowning and Big Brother-ing. Or let on how much she was a little intimidated by being alone. No need to make Mags go all huffy on her! Again.
"I solemnly swear I am not up to no good." Kodi raised a hand like she was vowing herself in to something. With a grin. "I'll be careful, okay? Geez. What, are you mom now?" She stuck her tongue out at her brother's back.
But she did have mace in her purse already. And the baseball bat wasn't a bad idea.
"I just called you dull." She agreed, delicately slipping her boots off to curl her legs under her while she sat on his couch now. Kodi debated on how to answer his last question.
"Well... does planning on getting a tattoo, finding a boyfriend, and taking over your old room count?" She asked innocently. Mostly joking. She did want to get a tattoo. kuropeco omg woman u and ur name changing!!!

Magiore couldn't help rolling his eyes this time. He idly fiddled with the stove top settings, making sure the heat was high enough, and then left the kettle water to boil and made his way over to the next cupboard.
"I'm your big brother, I have to look after you," he said, opening one of the cabinets and rummaging around. "That's just what I do, deal with it, darling."
A teacup was pulled out, along with a saucer, and Magiore set them together before reaching for a second set. "I'm not dull, I'm just quiet. There's a difference, all right? And you're just calling me dull because you know I'm better than you."
The playful, childish banter slipped out without him intending it to, but he cast a look at Kodi over his shoulder, a little smile on Magiore's face before he turned back to the saucers, almost choking.
"Please tell me that was a joke, otherwise I'm gonna kill you."

A very similar rolling of eyes was done while Magiore's back was still turned.
"Guess you got the short end of the stick then." She said dryly, with a little smile. "Mom found a way for you to keep watch on me without paying you." A little triumphant grin played at her lips while she watched him pull out the teacup and matching saucer. A second one following right after.
"Nuh uh. You're totally dull." Kodi knew he wasn't. Her brother was rather fascinating at times. She just liked to tease him. Endlessly. "I'm the baby, so that means I'm automatically better than you."
She just gave him the most angelic of looks. "What, taking over your old room? I swear I left most of it the way you originally had it! There just... might be a few things missing."
