Everything was easier when your prey was unconscious, Jet found. No need to worry about struggling or crying or calling out for help. Little did these people know what greater purpose they had in their measly little lives. The energy they provided gave so many others strength. It was really for the greater good.

He could feel the Eternal Senshi's approach, the aura sickeningly sweet in comparison to others he'd encountered. But despite the strangeness of the aura, it didn't really concern him. There was already a sizable orb of energy in his hand as he crouched over the druggie or college student or whomever he'd knocked out, the wood plank within arms reach.

"You'll stay back if you want him to live," he announced as the senshi approached, his voice almost nonchalant with just a hint of arrogance. He felt much more confident in his endeavors with a bargaining chip. Senshi claimed to "care" for civilians! They would do anything to uphold their pathetic lies.

Baby Negas were Ganymede’s favorite adversaries by far.

Oh, she felt bad for them sometimes. A little. When they weren’t being obnoxious punks or torturing pricks. Often she tried to remind herself that it wasn’t their fault. They were young and gullible and stupid. If they’d been left alone to grow and mature, maybe they wouldn’t have fallen into the Negaverse’s trap. She could only hope they’d have second thoughts later on in their illustrious, Chaos-filled career—though all evidence tended to point to the contrary.

In any case, young, inexperienced Negaverse officers were at least fairly amusing. And this one right here… this one was definitely young. Sixteen maybe. If that, even. Maybe a smidge taller than she was if she hadn’t been in her Senshi heels. No doubt he weighed a bit more too, but that was hardly a concern. That he was still in high school was no question. There was a juvenile irritability about him that she remembered from high school. It was easy to distinguish; high school students exuded petulance—college students, freedom.

But this officer… this officer she remembered, and his presence there made her blood boil.

“Wow, imagine that,” Ganymede began. A wide grin stretched across her face, but it held no amusement. It looked mean. “Look at the little baby Lieutenant making threats. I remember you, kid. You don’t look so tough without your superiors around, that’s for sure. Now your threats don’t mean diddly squat.”

She showed him another wide smirk and said almost lazily, “Searing Passion.”

A little taste of that and maybe he’d learn his lesson.

This senshi. The bird in a cage. He remembered her. He should have recognized the danger in the nonchalance of her voice and the way she spoke. Jet didn’t even realize she had used her magic until it was too late. The heat that rapidly grew he attributed to adrenaline. Eyes narrowed slightly, he turned to open his mouth in response, but the words never came.

Instead there was only heat. There were no flames, but he felt as though there should be. The magic manifested itself in such a way that he felt as though he would surely die. His knees hit the ground first as an agonizing scream of pain tore from his throat, reverberating through the alley and cool night air.

It was only to be expected that these senshi would either feign innocence, or give into their bloodlust. Tears welled in his eyes from the pain, but Jet’s body was tense, enraged and not willing to give up so easily. His hands sought for the civilian, the orb of energy already lost when he’d collapsed. Fists pounded against the civilian as Jet screamed out his anger and pain and frustration. The senshi didn’t heed his words, so he would follow through with his threat.

Once, a long time ago it seemed now, Ganymede would have felt bad (and there was a part of her that was still horrified by what her magic could do), but as far as she was concerned the kid had been asking for it. Slowly, with each new threat posed to her by the Negaverse, she was learning to accept the things about herself that weren’t quite as pristine as her aura might make her seem.

Normally Ganymede reserved her magic for those situations in which there was no alternative. Though now wasn’t necessarily one of those times, she wanted this Lieutenant to pay—for what he’d done to her, for what he’d done to Valhalla, for what he’d surely done to the other captives. Besides, she was confident that the kid wasn’t going to die from it. Maybe her magic was good for dusting youma, but she’d never known it to do so to a human.

She crossed her arms over her chest as she approached the Lieutenant, staring dispassionately down her nose as she quelled the instinct to cringe away, forcing herself to listen to his screams and not give in to the horror. Once at his side, Ganymede nudge the Lieutenant with her booted foot, gently kicking him away from the civilian before he could cause any more harm.

“Alright, tough guy, I get it,” she said. “You made your point when you had us locked up. You’re a big, strong Lieutenant. Stupid or brave, whatever you want to believe. I prefer to think stupid. Threatening and attacking a civilian isn’t going to get you on many people’s good sides. I think it’s probably one of the few things most of us can agree on this side of the White Moon, though I have my suspicions there are quite a few people who’d like to see you burn. You’d've been better off taking what energy you’d managed to get and leaving this guy to me.”

“You don’t get it,” he heaved, breathless and shaking from the pain that was now slowly ebbing. She didn’t know him. She didn’t know what he’d been through and there was no reason for her to even care to know. “Stop playing around,” he spat, shoving weakly at her leg as she nudged him away. If she was going to kill him, he wished she would just get it over with. He felt sick… he was going to be sick.

Unable to hold back any longer, he turned to empty his stomach on the ground, still shaking from the shock of the pain she’d unleashed on him with her magic. If that’s what it could be called… it was more like torture than anything, which he assumed was the entire point. She wanted revenge. He might not have physical proof of the pain, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t real.

Jet turned, crumpled on the ground, to glare up at the senshi, the one they called Ganymede — his last defiant act if she was going to kill him. It wasn’t exactly how he wanted to be found… dead and lying in his own sick, unable to avenge his brother, but he did what he could.

Or was it all he could do…? He could at least cause her some damage…

He pushed himself up on unsteady legs and lunged towards her. Magic or not, he still had some fight left in him. He would hit her wherever he could, and if that meant getting killed in the process, at least he went down trying.

“Wow, that’s a first.”

Despite the nonchalant tone of Ganymede’s voice, watching the Lieutenant become physically ill in response to the pain unsettled her greatly. She struggled not to show it. Maybe she didn’t care to be feared, and perhaps she wasn’t concerned about being taken as seriously as some of her allies invariably were by the Negaverse, but she at least wanted to appear sure of herself. Even in the moments in which she wasnt.

She took a step back to avoid the puke, wrinkling her nose in disgust instead of shrinking away. That the Lieutenant soon stood to his feet came as a bit of a relief. Perhaps he’d been ill already and her magic simply exacerbated it. Or he could have a weak stomach and a low tolerance for pain.

His fist connected with her shoulder before she thought to dodge. It was a half-hearted hit at best, his movements still restrained by the slowly fading pain. Ganymede 'tsk'ed and rolled her eyes, swinging out with her hand and aiming for the side of the Lieutenant's face. She neglected to close her fist, but she didn't leave her hand entirely open either, with the result that one of her nails caught along the Lieutenant's jaw.

Ganymede 'tsk'ed again, glancing down at her hand with a small frown. “Look at what you’ve done, one of my nails is broken,” she said, forcing her voice to sound snooty and over-concerned. It was all an act. It was easier to pretend to be something she wasn't when the alternative was to face up to what she was.

“And I just got them done yesterday, too,” she added. “Why don't we quit while we're ahead, yeah? You head on home before this gets even messier. Trust me, kid, you don’t want to try me.”

He was way in over his head, but he couldn’t just concede defeat. Even if she was implying she would let him run away… how was he supposed to explain himself? Not only had he lost the energy he’d gathered, but he’d been attacked and humiliated by this half-pint senshi. If anything, he feared being killed less than having to admit he’d failed. He was sure whatever she could do to him paled in comparison to what a General would do to him.

It was a thought that had him laughing softly, darkly to himself as her hand made contact with his face. He felt her nail break, cutting a jagged line down his jaw, his face would no doubt start to bruise soon.

“You don’t get it,” he repeated softly, supporting himself against the alley wall he’d stumbled against from the force of her hit and the unsteadiness of his own legs. “You think you can scare me?” His face blanched of color as he spoke, although whether it was from being sick or the thought of something worse… it was hard to determine.

He’d wanted to become a Negaverse officer, but he didn’t realize how horrible he would be at it. He hadn’t been able to prove that he could stand on his own as an officer in the months after his recruitment. He doubted there was much tolerance for continued failures. The Negaverse had no need for Lieutenants who needed their hand held through simple things like energy gathering.

“You think your magic is anything compared to…” He didn’t finish the thought, forcing another humorless laugh, distracting himself by focusing on keeping his legs from shaking so noticeably. “Failure isn’t a luxury we have… You escaped from us, but think of what a reward I will get for bringing you in, or even killing you.” She would be doing him a favor if she finished him off. At least then he wouldn’t have to show his face when he failed.

He lunged for her again, two plastic knives pulled from subspace this time to help aide his attack. Jet swung his arm out and across, gripping tightly to the knife as he tried to make the most damage possible.

“Compared to what?” she wondered idly, examining her nails as if the broken one caused her great distress.

Ganymede shook her hand to relieve the mid ache in her fingers, wincing and hoping she hadn’t done herself any damage. She really needed to learn how to punch properly. Hurting herself in the process wasn’t going to do her a bit of good.

It was what she got after spending so long shying away from fighting. Even now she was not as aggressive as some of her allies. But that was okay. She was better than she used to be. Experience had led her to grow as a Senshi. She could hold her own—certainly against one Lieutenant; against a Captain, too, and maybe one-on-one with a General if she was lucky and didn't run into one of the more brutal ones. She wasn't looking for perfection, just improvement and personal growth.

She rolled her eyes when the Lieutenant pulled his weapons from subspace, snorting at the sight of two plastic knives.

“You think this is a picnic or something?” she asked.

Already growing weary of the Lieutenant's persistence, Ganymede moved to make use of what she was actually good at. One of the Lieutenant's knives grazed her shoulder, but it did little damage, merely scraped her skin. It likely wouldn't even bleed. When she was in position, Ganymede struck out with one of her legs, aiming a swift kick towards the Lieutenant's shin to trip him up.

“Go back to your superiors with your tail between your legs,” she told him. “You won't be the first and you definitely won't be the last. What do they expect when they don't even properly equip you for battle? They want you to fail so they can break you and brainwash you into another one of their little puppets.”

“Compared to what the General Queens will do to you once they catch you again, Ganymede,” he spoke her name this time. Her kick had caused him to trip and knocked him to the ground, and he struggled to get back up, his lips curled into a cruel smile. “I remember you…” he told her, although he was sure she knew, as she’d recognized him. “How you screamed. How your knight friend screamed.”

He refused to surrender. She would have to kill him first. He righted himself slowly, his hands still clasping onto his knives. “How did that starseed taste? They’re delicious, aren’t they? Although I suppose it didn’t have the same effect on you, did it?”

Jet had never consumed a starseed before. Not yet at least, but that didn’t mean he did not know how they worked. They were great sources of energy and each one destroyed was one less senshi to return.

“Wouldn’t you like to become a youma and be controlled by one of the General Queens? She could have you attack your knight friend. Wouldn’t that be ironic? Do you think he’d kill you, or let you kill him?” Jet pushed himself off the ground, lunging for her once more. He tried to avoid her legs this time, but if he’d be able to manage it, he’d be surprised.

Ganymede’s eyes widened, her gaze lit with fire.

“You little piece of s**t,” she spat at him.

No more games. She was done with this and done with him. Once he lunged for her, Ganymede grabbed him by the jacket and slammed him against the brick wall of the alley, not caring if it made a painful collision with his head.

She nearly shook with rage but managed to contain herself enough not to have such a visible reaction. He should be able to tell by looking her in the eye, in any case, at the cold fire that burned there—cold like the starseed she feared she could still feel in her gut. Blinded by her anger, Ganymede jerked the Lieutenant forward and shoved him back against the wall again.

“If you come near me or Valhalla again, I swear you’ll regret it,” she seethed. “You think you can capture and torture us and get away with it? Think again, you little p***k. Karma’s a ******** b***h.”

Jet tensed in surprise when she grabbed hold of him, and then let out a yelp of pain when she slammed him against the wall. It caused his vision to blur, but he let out a cold laugh. He dropped the knives to take hold of her wrists, trying to get her to release him. “Hit a nerve? What will you do? Torture me? Kill me? You senshi are all the same. You think yourself so just and righteous, but you’re all just hypocrites,” he hissed, wincing as she shoved him against the wall once more.

“We know your weakness,” he said softly, his eyes still dark with hate even if his vision blurred. “Your husband, Valhalla? The General Queen may not be able to corrupt you… but just you wait. It won’t be me you’ll have to watch your back for… I’m sure a General Valhalla would make an excellent addition to our ranks.”

If she was going to kill him, he wouldn’t be surprised. Part of him didn’t think she had it in her, but maybe this would be enough to push her over the edge. Regardless, if he lived through this, he would have a good report for his superiors.

He was already well on his way of being completely out of it by the time she slammed him against the brick a fourth time. He could taste blood in his mouth, and the back of his neck felt hot and slick with some thick liquid. That it was his own blood didn’t even occur to him at this point. Jet gasped for air as she held him and leaned close.

The pain didn’t come right away from the magic, but it was there faster than she could leave the alley. He crumpled to the ground, unable to scream, unable to do anything besides try to endure the pain. And when that wasn’t enough, his consciousness slipped away.
