Returning to the place one spent their childhood should have felt warm and welcoming. It should have made Nordeth feel at home to be back amongst her people, and yet, for some strange reason, it did not. It was as cold and distant as the mountains that the Zenans lived in. Such a realization made her worry. Had she made the right choice? Was coming back to Zena really in her best interest? Most of her formative years had been sent with the Shifters, and she finally felt welcomed there. Maybe she had jumped too soon after Quape had passed. There was only one way to know for sure, however, and that was to try her luck.

If things didn’t work out in her village, she could always go back.

Despite not feeling so comfortable, there was one thing that the young woman was looking forward to. She was eager to visit her childhood friend, Aldren. Even if she didn’t feel used to the mountains yet, seeing him would probably help more than anything else. How long had it been? Ten or eleven years, if she was remembering correctly – longer than she had thought. He probably wouldn’t even recognize her.

The path she took to get to Aldren’s home was all-too familiar. In her head, all she could picture was herself as a little girl, hurrying to go and play with her best friend until the sun dipped down beneath the mountains. Her hair wasn’t flying this day, as it had in the past when she ran to meet him. Instead, she walked slowly and contemplatively, to allow herself to take in all the sights and sounds yet again. Eventually, she made it to the house that Aldren called home, and she walked up to the door without a word. Breathing in deeply, she steadied herself.

This was it.

It was now or never.

Sepharine's golden orbs pinched together as she sat in her chair, immediate attention angled on the cards she held in her hand. But her peripheral vision caught everything. When confined to one place as she was, change became obvious, especially when the change was moving. Aldren didn't notice. His back was to the wall, brows pinched and tongue-tip poking from between his lips. He was focused intently on his task, fingers brushing lightly over the top of his cards as he tried to select one worth showing to her. He took his time with the game, much longer in any turn than Seph had the patience for. So when a flicker a shadowy movement from outside caught her eye, she knew she had to stop him.

"Someone's here," she quipped softly.

Aldren raised his head, looking warily from his cards to the door. "Prolly just Uncle," he grunted, carefully laying his cards face down on the floor and untucking his legs from beneath himself. "He said they caught a lot on the hunt last night." He rose to his feet and padded towards the door. "I feel like he'd be better off saving it, since I can hunt just fine on my own-"

Seph snorted.

"I can," Aldren insisted with a huff. "Anyway, don't look too excited or nothin'." He tugged open the door, instantly inviting a brisk chill into the room. his arm went out to catch and tug their visitor in out of sheer habit, but as his fingers brushed the thick fabric of her coat, Aldren stalled.

It certainly wasn't his uncle, in any case. A woman with long, nearly indigo hair stood in his doorway, with soft honey-toned eyes, the long, pointed ears of his people, and a distinctive 'v' pattern to the crystals adorning her cheeks. She was shorter than him. But then, most people were.

"Who is it?" Seph demanded from her perch, craning her neck around to try and peer around her brother's frame.

"Nordeth..."
