As it was her habit to do, Teleri Lindai woke just before dawn, coiled amongst the bodies of her still-sleeping sisters and mother. It wasn't the abrupt waking as though from a nightmare, more a gentle drift to awareness... She could tell the sun was coming, and like every day before it seemed like she needed to be awake to see it. Not that she was exactly sure why, she couldn't see a sunrise in all the shades of splendor that her sisters or mother described. She couldn't see a sunset the same way, either. There was something wrong with her eyes that didn't let her, made all those shades in the middle wash into something murky and unclear. She knew the bright, bold reds like the one splashed on her coat. Knew the cool, dark blues like oncoming night. There were even crisp oranges and sunny yellows she could pick out. But oranges and yellows and greens all looked the same, until Teleri nearly shook with frustration as she tried to explain it.
'I don't see that! I don't see any of it!'
But those were thoughts for another time. There was no way to fix them in the space of a single sunrise, anyway... Probably no way to fix them in a dozen sunrises. Maybe not ever. So why worry?
In the distance there was the soft whisper-sigh of other Flockmates breathing, most deeply asleep in the dusk-purple light. With a firm closing of her eyes the filly remained still for a few moments, consciously trying to increase the time each day but rarely succeeding in it. She was awake, and it was nearly day, and as far as she was concerned that meant she should be in motion. 'Nothing for it.'
She was frustrated because she didn't know if the sky was turning pink or blue as the sun kept coming... There was no way for her to go back to sleep now.
With another sigh and a stretch and a shift of her weight, Teleri gathered her hooves more firmly beneath her and slowly came to her feet. She moved with a careful, quiet patience, unwilling to awaken her family just yet. Instead she stepped over one sprawling claw and flared her wings wide, taking the opportunity to stretch. When it seemed her siblings were not aware of her missing warmth she dove out of the nest, her wings aiding her in a gliding descent. Hooves on solid ground, she took a moment to flap her wings and give a faint stamp, trotting through the Flocklands to a specific nest.
Dawn was breaking now, and with luck she could get a music lesson in without her sisters. It would be nice to be the best at something. "Hello?"

As the sun slowly started to rise, Vanwyn stood quietly at the edge of her nest. Her nest, now empty of furs and trinkets gifted to her by a former lover. Empty of the memories of two children long gone. She was okay though; her heart healed over and guarded with fierce claws and sharp eyes. The Harpy flicked an ear casually when she heard the quiet shift of the small hummingbird that was her companion. Linnod let out a small squeak of a yawn as she woke up, fluttering her wings before flying forward and landing quietly on Vanwyn's back to preen her feathers. Vanwyn smiled down at the small creature, before moving away from the edge of her nest. She pulled on the gold accessories that she was known to have on her form. She had her mother's beauty, after all. She pulled on the newly acquired wing cuffs, watching as the bent and shifted when she walked. It would make dancing so much more beautiful...
Linnod let out a protesting noise when Vanwyn climbed out of the nest, hopping from one branch to another until she got herself down to the grass. She cooed gently toward the hummingbird, and moved forward quietly, before hearing something. Her ears perked up, and she glanced around, soft eyes searching the area. It was still somewhat dark out, the sun not having peeked high enough to brighten the world completely. Her tail gave a small flick, the feathers shifting to lay more gracefully against her flank. After a moment, she spotted the small filly moving toward her nest. A soft spoken little thing, wasn't she? But Vanwyn had been like that at one point too.
She turned her body casually back around, moving toward her niece. Her sister was a lucky mare, having such beautiful little girls. And all with such promise. The mare smiled gently down at the filly, and dipped her head down lightly in greeting, her claws resting lightly against the blade of grass. "Good morning, little one. What are you doing awake at such an hour? If I remember right, my sister sleeps well past sunrise." She said teasingly, her head tilting to watch the filly with a curious look.

As she walked along Teleri Lindai decided she was fond of this time of day, of the cool dark that dusk offered. In fact, she rather figured this was her favorite. There were no colors to confuse her by their presence or lack thereof, the world merely wrapped in a purple-dusk shadow. It was all cool shadows, all blues and charcoal and violets. High noon she could see with its wash of yellow and orange, all bright bewildering colors. But they also expected her to see the green of the grass, and that just looked like more unending sunshine to her. No, dusk was best.
So Teleri splayed her wings in the shadow of the morning and paced on quiet hooves through the territory. There was unending variety in the decorations marking the various nests of the Flock. The white filly considered them with interest, admiring feathers and beads and jewlery, fur, bones and other trinkets that had been presented to or won by the Harpy that displayed them. She also noted flowers and cleverly twining plants among the branches and such. The craft aspect of such things interested her, so she noted the details and stored them away in her memory for later.
She had finally arrived at her destination, the nest recently cleaned. She had heard it was once thoroughly decorated, but saw no evidence of that now. Now it seemed like a clean, new nest.. Like one she might one day move into when she was grown. Regardless, this was where she had wanted to end up, and now she was here. Her sisters still deeply asleep, and her mother unaware. Maybe she could convince her aunt to give her a lesson. She hoped so, at least.
"Good Morning, Aunt." She replied dutifully, recovering from the faint start the mare's presence had caused. "It is very nice to see you.... And I am sorry if I have disturbed you this morning, I know it's early and most of the others are asleep..."
Teleri glanced around the quiet morning and gave a soft giggle, ducking her head shyly as she pawed restlessly at the ground. "I... Umm, that is... I was hoping you'd be awake and since everyone else is asleep. I was wondering if maybe I could get in an extra dance lesson, before the others?"
Soon enough her sisters and the other fillies would wake, most of them clever and clawed and perfectly capable of discerning the colors on Vanwyn's mane and feathers as they shifted into one another. Teleri only saw the blue, and the rest of it turned yellow in her eyes. She imagined it was green in truth, there was a similarity to it like the fresh spring grass, but that also looked like the tangerine shades of sunset... So really, how would she know?
Still, Teleri didn't want to feel like she was less than them. So she decided to do something about it. She'd train harder and practice more, and one day be able to out-dance them all, even if they could out-hunt and out-climb and out-gather her.

Vanwyn watched the little filly with a brightness in her eyes. Her own kin were so much wolf that they often didn’t care about dancing or singing; didn’t care about the art of their culture. It was strictly a “hunt” want. Maybe that was why they left her; maybe that was why they all wandered away without saying good bye. Because she wouldn’t understand… Because she wasn’t wolf, and therefor would not comprehend the need or want to constantly be hunting. She had more to her life than that. After a moment, her eyes flickered to a focus on the young filly. No need to get herself lost in the thoughts of her family.
The mare shifted a bit and moved over to where Teleri stood. She dipped her head some and chirped affectionately, before glancing around, her eyes curious. A lesson? It was rare the teacher gave lessons outside class; and even more rare that she did one on one’s. There were always so many foals to teach. She glanced up and toward where her little class was located, her head tilting some. None of the other foals would be awake this early. They often slept longer hours and would meet her a little late for class. That meant she could take some time to teach Teleri one on one. She smiled fondly, before glancing down to the small filly, and nodded her head curtly. ”Of course, little one.” She cooed.
After a moment, she nodded as if to tell Teleri to follow. She moved quietly toward the more wooded area, her claws breaking branches and pushing them aside as she walked. The musicians wouldn’t be awake this early; not even if there was fresh food. She smiled down at the filly gently, and then continued to walk. A hummingbird flew up toward her, chirping a soft, high pitched noise. Vanwyn smiled at the creature, leaning to brush her nose against it’s body, before moving on ahead. ”Linnod, can you go start some music for me, my dear?” The hummingbird beat it’s wings a little faster, nodded, and then moved farther ahead, her little body disappearing in the leaves. Vanwyn laughed softly, a bell like noise, before glancing down toward the foal. ”The musicians are going to be asleep; so we will learn with the birds today. Natural music is one of the best things to learn to in the morning.” She explained gently.
Eventually they arrived at a small circle of beaten down grass. It was clear that she came here often to dance or teach others, usually adults who didn’t want to be embarrassed learning with foals. She leaned down and ushered the little foal in quietly, before following, her head tilting some. She could hear the birds start to come to life, chirping and letting out their songs. She smiled gently, before letting her gaze lock on Teleri once more. ”Is there anything in specific you were wanting to learn today, Teleri?” She asked gently.

The keener hunters of the Flock were a source of fascination to the filly, though she was always sure to watch them from a distance. True enough she would never be a hunter for the Flock, she lacked the claws and teeth and spirit for it. Still, her plant identification skills and gathering were improving. Perhaps once day she could serve as a gatherer on behalf of the herd at large, if they determined her skills had progressed to that stage. Practice was slow, some days, having to rely on the shape and scent of a thing to determine its identity. The colors all looked the same to her, and were therefore of no help when she was attempting to determine the name or nature of the thing.
But dancing was different. Dancing didn't require countless days of studying and memorizing and practicing... It was just so fun that Teleri was willing to put that sort of time into practicing. She enjoyed the music, watching the clever musicians play and listening to their song. Practicing dancing was fun -more fun than singing, really- and it helped her relax and let her enjoy herself, let her vent emotion or frustration.
Shaking herself from nose to tail, she glanced entreatingly up at Vanwyn as she waited for the mare to decide. It seemed it only took a moment, and then the mare was giving a faint nod. When she agreed, Teleri cheered, giving a half-rear and a gleeful hop as she turned to follow after her aunt toward the woods. Truth be told, she hadn't honestly thought far enough ahead to music or what dance she would learn or... well, anything else besides the possibility of getting a one-on-one lesson with her teacher.
Gleefully frisking along at Vanwyn's side, Teleri glanced here and there, wondering where they were headed and what she would learn. At the hummingbird's greeting she hesitated, eyes wide and curious as she watched the small feathered creature disappear again. Learning with natural music? They hadn't really done that yet, which only served to make her curiosity grow. Did her aunt have a whole flock of songbirds at her beck and call? It wouldn't really be surprising. Teleri thought Vanwyn was one of the loveliest members of the Flock... Surely if any in the Flock were the one to have a charm of living musicians as their friends, that someone would be Vanwyn?
"That sounds very exciting, Aunt." She replied dutifully. "I hope it is not an imposition for them... Thank you again for agreeing to teach me. I am afraid I did not plan at all for such a thing, so whatever you think is best for me to learn? Is there something I need to work on, specifically?"
With a pause Teleri Lindai glanced at her three pairs of wings, which seemed awkward and unwieldy still. True enough, her sisters were no better at using them, but that was hardly the point. "Will I learn to use them better, one day? Perhaps when I am dancing? For now they do not ever seem to do what I want them to..."

Vanwyn moved easily through the woods, as if the path was something she had walked a thousand times. Which was probably true. Especially now that she lived alone and without people to help guide her. Her mother gone, her old mate gone, her children mostly gone, but Vanrui had so many things going on in her own life that it was essentially her leaving. And now that everyone was away and gone, the young mare had time to figure out who she was. So she always went off on her own, figuring out who she was, what she was, where she would go. And it would take her ages to figure it out to the fullest; but she had a small foal to care for and teach at the moment. And the thought alone made her happy as can be.
She slipped through a path, and when the trees opened up again there were dozens of birds. Linnod was in them, letting out small noises and fluttering her wings. Vanwyn smiled at the small bird, trilling her voice to chirp at her. The hummingbird flew over, landing easily on Vanwyn’s shoulder and peered down at the filly. She ruffled her feathers, and let out a happy little noise, as if telling Teleri that they all didn’t mind. ”Of course not, darling. These little ones love to sing and fly around while we dance. It’s something I’ve been doing with them for quite some time.” She said her voice soft. She paused when she got near the center of the small clearing, and her eyes flicked around the birds, before she looked down toward the young filly. She turned her attention to Teleri, and her eyes softened, before she tilted her head and focused on the little lady.
When the wings were brought up, Vanwyn smiled soflty. She dipped her head down, letting her eyes brighten slightly and she leaned, nuzzling the filly’s hair lightly before standing up to her full height. ”I can’t say I know. I don’t have wings, sweetling. I just have adornments. But I promise you, as time goes on, you will learn to use them just as you do your claws.” She chirped. She shifted some, and nodded toward the center of the small field. ”Let’s focus on your dancing on two legs today. Ensure you have your balance down. I know it can be unusually hard to do, especially with the wings. But, I also know you can do it.” She said gently, nodding her head. The birds started to sing, letting their chirps and trills fill the morning air.
