The day was clear and warm and the sidewalk was surprisingly clear for a weekday shortly after school let out. Dessie had changed out of her school uniform and now made her way towards the hospital. She was reading a textbook, studying for tests, as she made her way her sneakers occasionally scraping against the cement, her backpack resting heavy on her shoulders, and a bundle of flowers were tucked under her arm. Her reflection followed her from the store windows; the young girl's figure hidden by the torn and aged jeans, a large faded shirt and a battered ball cap. Her short hair helped hide her gender but the hint of curves and the sweet face revealed the beauty that Dessie was trying to dismiss. With her nose in her textbook she was able to miss the few a glances her way and the even rarer appreciative glance.
She approached a crossing slowly. She had even paused to check that it was clear before sticking her nose back into the book and wavering on the edge waiting to finish just one more line before she crossed. It was during that time that the light changed without her even knowing.

Even with the sound of music serving as an auditory distraction to the bustling world around him Aiden was still quite aware of his surroundings. One woman, with a way too strong perfume on passed by in a short dress, seemed to undoubtedly be trying to gain the attention of the first horny man only to publicly shame him. With the way her head tilted back and she seemed to be looking down at the world the raven haired young man could only shake his head head at her and let her pass before the students at the parkour gym teased him for smelling like a girl. With his arms cross in front of him, while he waited for the crosswalk to signal it was their turn to go, Aiden’s index finger tapped against his bicep in tandem with the beat. Three… two… one… Slate blue eyes glanced up as the traffic lights turned from green to yellow to red then Go… In the same second the red hand blinked into the white light of the person walking, his foot had already stepped off the curb. As bad as it was to admit to, which is why he hadn’t ever voiced this before, a part of him always wished that some driver would pull too far forward over the stripped lines just so he could slid across their hood or try what they do in the movies when the main actor is about to be hit and instead they roll over the top and land on their feet. A strange life goal but still something he wanted to do at least once in his life. Just as Aiden had reached the midpoint of the street where the red Subaru, which was in the left turn only lane, was facing the intersection eagerly anticipating that green arrow so they could gun it, he watched as a young girl, likely still in grade school, had approached the corner with her head buried in some book she was holding. Thoughts of his sister’s moments of absent mindedness brought a single memory to the forefront from a time she had walked into a closed sliding glass window while she had been texting a friend. While what happened to Jenna was funny, seeing someone step out into oncoming traffic would be less than humerous. “HEY!” he yelled in an attempt to get the blond haired chick’s attention. Three long strides and he was jumping over the curb reaching out to grab her arm just as a semi-truck's mirror flew by narrowly missing her forehead

Dessie was so absorbed in her schoolwork she didn't even register someone yelling, let alone them yelling at her. It wasn't until a hand grabbed her right bicep, yanking her back, did she know anyone was close by let alone within touching distance. Her textbook went flying, along with the flowers, as she reacted instinctively to the manhandling. She delivered a hard left hook towards the others side. She had no idea if it was a guy or girl, big or small, all Dessie was concerned about is getting them off of her as fast as possible. She heard the sound of a truck screaming past, horn blaring and radio so high it could be heard clearly. Dessie had no idea just how close she had come to being just as squished her flowers were, something she didn't particularly care at that moment. "Get off me," she growled as she yanked her arm out of the guy's grip. She had finally realized that the person who had a grip on her was a guy who was likely around her age... All the more reason to get him off of her.

She was quick, but years of parkour training had taught Aiden enough about being aware of his surroundings that he at least saw the closed fist as she swung at him.
Much like on TV when someone was dodging a bladed weapon being swung at their abdomen, he too sucked his gut in and arched his back so she caught the front of his shirt instead of his ribs; however she did graze his abs a bit. “Woah woah… watch it.”
His face was full of both surprise and confusion from the volatile reaction he had just received “I just saved you from a rather nasty nose job thank you.” Which was true, though chances are, given the speed the vehicle was going it would have more than likely taken off more.
Without needing her to repeat herself, Aiden let her arm go and held his hands up in defence. “I’m sorry, listen I was just trying to keep you from walking out onto incoming traffic,” he tried to explain, hoping she would at least listen to reason. To try to calm her down a bit and not draw too much more attention onto them the raven haired young man knelt down to help gather the book and flowers she had just dropped.

The moment he let go she took a step back and ended up against the light pole. The feel of the cold metal against her back helped bring her a bit back to herself, and the people around who were starting to look their way. She didn't need or want attention. She growled as she shoved her hands in her pockets and hunched her shoulders, trying to become less visible. "I don't like being touched." It was the best the guy was going to get in the way of an apology for the punch. A blush rose high on her cheeks as she looked around anxiously; the people who stopped to look before moving on, the cars racing through the intersection, even the flapping of the flags that were poking out of the side of a few of the stores.
"At least you were able to dodge it." It was said quietly as she watched the cars, a bit surprised just how well he was able to avoid the strike. She hadn't pulled the force or anything. Someone else definitely would have been socked right in the guy or side. When she glanced back at him the guy was even helping to pick up her stuff.
She quickly knelt down and reached for the scattered flowers as he did at the same time. Dessie pulled her hand back and watched him gather everything. The book was a bit battered but no real issues, it was the flowers that had sustained the most damage. Most were bruised, a few down right crushed in the road, a lone Daisy seemed to be the only flower to escape any injury at all. For some reason seeing that one flower made her eyes tear up, which she quickly stifled. Tears were for the weak and she was not weak. She scooped the lone flower up and smiled sadly, it wasn't exactly the bouquet she meant to give to Lily but it would do.

Having a sister of his own, about the same age as the girl beside him, Aiden was all too familiar with that look on the blond's face. An attempt to remain composed or even uncaring in the face of devastation, the same way Jenna looked when they were younger and they failed to at least place in the top three at a dance competition.
With one hand he reached out to pass the book back to Dessie as he ran his other fingers through his hair. It seemed clear enough by her reaction that they were a gift for someone rather than something she had just received from a boyfriend.
“Hey, I don’t know how busy you are, but if you have some time there is a grocery store two blocks away. I’ll get you a new one.” Not that he really had the money to be spending on such things but he could get away with skipping lunch for two days. Worse case scenario Aiden would just swing by his mother's house and make a quick PB&J sandwich and grab a glass of milk to go.

Dessie's head snapped up and she said quickly, and a little coldly, "no." Almost as an afterthought, mainly because it was, she added, "thank you, but no." The words were still rather cold but she tried to inject some real feeling into it, Xander would have expected it. She shook her head and quickly took the offered book, "the room normally has a lot of flowers anyway so my lone daisy will stand out better this way." Her explication was kind of lame but Dessie didn't want to tell the guy she didn't have the money for another bouquet and she didn't need his help buying another one, or really trust him enough to have that money standing over her head. It never passed her mind that the boy was just offering to do her a favor, no strings attached, because in her lifetime she learned time and time again nothing is free. There is always a catch and she didn't want to find out what it was.
If she had the time she would have gone back to the house, grabbed her guitar, and busked for the cash, like she did for the first bouquet. Dessie didn't want to ask Xander for the money to afford flowers for his sister, hell he had already done so much for her she was reluctant to ask anything from him. He was actually one of the only people Dessie trusted. True living with him, and currently the house full of people, came with rules but they were acceptable 'strings' to finally find someplace she seemed to belong... To even be loved.

“Listen,” he said with a sigh before rising to his feet. “I don’t know who you’re going to visit at the hospital, or what happened them, but I can tell by the tone in your voice that you don’t believe what you just said.” Slate blue eyes locked with a vibrant glacier blue. Her destination was an educated guess based on the fact unless it was a nursing home for the elderly or someone being cared for at their own house, he couldn’t really think of a place nor reason a room would have a lot of flowers unless someone was sick or hurt. “Am I right?”
Without waiting for her reply he continued, “Regardless of the circumstances it was pretty much my fault your gift was destroyed. So please,” he reached out his hand to help her up. “Allow me to replace it for you.”

The fact that this boy knew where she was going made Dessie even more weary of him. It never crossed her mind that he would have made an educated guess, it also didn't help that they were a few blocks from the hospital and she was heading in that direction. A person did not just know where you were going unless you told them or they were following you. And if they were following you they were up to no good... It had happened to her once or twice during her time in California. The thugs learned pretty quick she is fast and mean when cornered. So she remained quiet though her eyes got even colder and more distant. All good will he had from helping her had evaporated, not that she really cared about it too much.
Dessie got to her feet and with her lone flower and slightly battered book she looked quite ragged but something about the way she stood radiated confidence and cold.... Ice cold distance. "Again, no thank you." The words dropped like chunks of ice and were final. She wouldn't accept a kind word from him right now let alone new flowers that cost money. "Excuse me. I have to go now." The light had just turned red and the walk symbol had come on. Without bothering to look back Dessie hurried across the street, the sooner she got to the hospital the better.

“I wonder who spit in her oatmeal.” A curiosity spoken out loud as he watched her cross the street with unmatched determination and a heavy foot. Drawing in a deep breath Aiden exhaled slowly women… No matter how much he tried, there would be no understanding the ways they think. Forever an enigma to those of the opposite gender. Curious, he pulled the samsung phone out of his back pocket to check the time. “Eh, I got time.” he shrugged his shoulders disconcerned with how much time he had left to get to work. Fifteen minutes was enough to get to the pool and into his lifeguard suit with at least four minutes to spare; no need to rush. One last glance in the direction the young girl ran off, Aiden half smiled and raised his hand in a farewell gesture. “Take care, and watch your step.” Words of caution though nobody stood close enough to hear just as the blond haired female disappeared into a crowd of people.
