Whenever I make a new journal post, the textbar thing(tell me what it's called please. it's completely slipped my mind), transparently covers the first line of text. When hovering over the first line of text, instead of a text marker, I see an arrow, like I'm hovering over an image.

1) Are you talking about the toolbar? (The bar with BOLD, Italics, Underling, etc.) 2) What browser? 3) What version of BG?

I just downloaded the Firefox version (I generally use Chrome) and I don't have the issue. I would advise you to save all your custom post styles and screen shoot all your settings. Then delete and re-download BetterGaia back onto Firefox. Understand that by doing this you are resetting EVERYTHING so anything like personalized settings, custom headers, post formats, etc. will be lost. I would make sure you have copied and pasted code into a word doc and save it. You might also want to look into your zoom settings on Firefox. It might be a simple fix as tweaking the zoom amount.
Also Firefox, to my knowledge, is not completely supported by BetterGaia, which just means there might be some bugs.
You might also want to quote Allvanishing, the guild master and coder of BetterGaia, for more information.
