They'd learned early on that it wasn't wise to do too much exercise before breakfast; Jordan's metabolism had always been fast, and the addition of the weapon bond had only made it easier to burn through energy at an astonishing rate. So he ate first, had coffee to make the world a little less unbearable, and then went out to do his morning run and the exercises and routines they'd developed for individual training. Stretch out, destroy a few training dummies that he'd help rebuild later, and perform the meditation exercises that helped them fall into sync.

The latter required very little conscious thought by now. At first, when they'd begun doing them, both hunter and weapon had had to concentrate, mentally step through the sequence of movements and work to complete them, body and minds straining at the same time, Ferros reinforcing Jordan's memory to keep the routine the same each time, and they'd noticed how it became easier to hold themselves in the same mental space. Over time, the routines had burned into muscle memory. It was almost a dance, a slowed-down fight against an invisible opponent, one of several sets that they'd invented. Keeping Ferros moving naturally at half speed through the arcs and spins worked all of Jordan's muscles, a display of the core and upper body strength that these exercises had helped to build and that they'd worked hard to achieve.

When the routine was finished, they fell into a balanced stance, resting the hammer across their shoulder and breathing hard but evenly as they surfaced slowly from the deep and interwoven flow of nonverbal thought that accompanied the exercise. It was like and unlike swimming underwater, coming up finally for air in a buoyant rush. That was Jordan's thought, they knew, but Ferros didn't have a metaphor to offer in its place, and was content to accept this one. After a moment, Ferros desummoned, and Jordan stretched, rolled his head so that his neck cracked, and headed over to where he'd left his water bottle.

Horace had begun his day with a run. He didn't necessarily like running, but fitness seemed terribly important when he fought monsters for a living. Sometimes he went with Peyton or he tried to bully Oliver into going or, like today, he ran alone. And he counted. Rather than focus on the waves, or the sun, he counted the steady thud of his feet against the ground. 8,456 steps. Not bad. Usually, he lost count, but today Horace was focused. After his run, he felt as thought he had boundless energy to spare (probably that second cup of awful coffee), so he jogged over to the training field. Maybe someone would want to spar his sweaty self.

However, instead of a spar, he found Jordan. He moved with a grace the belied Ferros' heftiness. Horace leaned against a dummy - well, the wreckage of a dummy, presumably Ferros and Jordan's handiwork - and watched. He didn't want to interrupt them mid-swing and ******** it all up, although he felt a little weird watching, almost like he was intruding on a private moment. Horace had situated himself behind Jordan a bit (because then he could sneak off if he felt too awkward), but the display was over quickly. He had only caught the tail end of it. As Jordan moved, he straightened up as well.

"So, it that your meditation thing?" He blurted out.

They startled slightly at the voice, right hand twitching; the red stone of the ring lit briefly. "Yeah," Jordan answered, turning to look at Horace curiously. "You out exercising? Were you there long? We get kind of absorbed in it." He pushed his hair back from his face, frowned a little as he discovered that quite a bit of it had gotten loose, and put his water bottle down so that he could tie it back again.

He made a small hmming noise at Jordan. He'd said 'we' and not I and maybe that was an indicator of, well, something. Horace had always thought Jordan and Ferros had a rather close bond, from what he saw of it. Jordan treated the weapon with more respect than most - something more than just a tool. Dr. Jannisari highly approved and there was very little she highly approved up, so Horace paid attention.

"Sorry if I startled you. Just got back from running and nah, wasn't watching long." He gave them a considering look and then grinned. "Was pretty beautiful though - you swinging Ferros around like he weighed less than a feather. I don't think Dr. J and I would do the same sort of thing."

{obviously not, horace. I am not a large hammer.}
{You know what I mean, Doctor.}

"Nah, it's fine. Like I said, we get pretty absorbed. Like reading a really good book, y'know, just about anything can startle you when you're only half there." Jordan picked the water bottle up and drank again. "Thanks. We started doing this to get my upper body strength up," he explained. "The bond makes Ferros's weight manageable for me, but he still feels like he weighs as much as a big sledgehammer, so that took some doing. I was sore for weeks."

He gave Horace a considering look. "Your strength is going to be in speed and flexibility, so if you were going to do something like this, I'd think you and Dr. J might do better with something more like a gymnastics routine."

"Yeah, people like you and Rep gotta have a lot of upper body strength, I imagine. Dunno how well I'd do with a large weapon." Horace shrugged and pull his sweaty shirt away from his body a bit in the hopes that some small breeze might sneak up it. "Not that I'm great at being nimble or speedy either." At Jordan's mention of gymnastics he made a face. Gymnastic brought to mind high-bars and pommel horses and leotards. Horace was not going to wear a leotard. He had some standards of dress.

But as for like... flippy stuff. Absently, he scratched his jaw. "I don't know about gymnastics, but I guess parkour would work, right? Off roofs and such. Though I don't know how to think with her, really."

"Well, either that or a really solid right hook,"Jordan said solemnly.

He nodded. "Parkour would probably work if that's better for you. Or some other kind of exercise, doesn't have to be combat-related or even physical, I guess. The part that matters is both of you thinking about the same thing at the same time, so that your thoughts sort of -- " he laced his fingers together to illustrate, "overlap. We found that it helped us sense each other's flow of thought better. I can't say if it would work for anyone, though," he added. "The weapon bond varies a lot. It seems to make sense that this could work for other people, but I could be wrong, too."

His lips quirked up, imagining a really truly solid right hook - one that hit like Ferros and flung an enemy backwards like a ragdoll. Horace snorted. "If only I could hit like Ferros. I'm definitely not suited to sun." The urge to summon and toss Jannisari up in the air idly was large, although he knew she would make scathing comments about her use as a weapon and not a toy.

"What exactly do you think about? I don't know how to snychronize my thought unless I want to bounce off rooftops while thinking about the humors of the body and how many literss of blood the average FEAR creature holds." Honestly, Horace wasn't sure where to begin. "Probably poke my eye out, too, running around with Dr. J summoned." The thought amused him - losing her in the grass, one tekko flying off the roof in some opposing direction, rolling forward onto Doctor Jannisari.

"Sun's combat strategy as well as power," Jordan said cheerfully. "But the world we saw where we were in a different division, Ferros was more like a polearm, so their shapes must have some kind of relation to the fighting style you develop."

"That sounds inefficient," he agreed. "And not very safe." The corners of his lips twitched up, amused by the image. "We do a set routine so that we have a series of steps to remember and concentrate on."

"It is? Hmm." Combat strategy was something he actually liked. Figuring out when to heal, to defend, how people should be arranged for efficiency on the fly was fun. "Oh- like an laternate reality thing again? Do those happen often? What division were you in?" Horace felt a little sheepish for asking so many questions, but he was, as always, curious.

He grinned and nodded. Inefficient was putting it mildly. "Can't really afford to handicap myself otherwise." He waggled the fingers of his left hand at Jordan. Over the course of three months, he'd beceom enough at ease that he could joke about his missing finger, as long as he tried not to think too hard about how he got it. Since it happened, he'd practiced nearly nonstop and while he'd never be able to hit quite as hard as he did with his right, it was good enough. Horace had been slacking terribly, though, and hadn't done any weapon training since he got baack from his last mission.

"Ah! If you think about the steps, that's an easy way to sync, then." He'd have to come up with a set routine, maybe. Or at least think about how he moved as he ran instead of just going. "Have you ever done any free-running or parkour before, Jordan?'

"We're offensive combat, but that's not just flinging yourself at the biggest thing to hit, much as it may look like it sometimes." Jordan laughed a little. "I don't know about often," he answered, "but a lot more than before, anyway. Once every year or two, maybe. On an irregular schedule. We were in Death, that time."

His eyebrows jumped a little at the joke, but he chuckled anyway. It seemed that Horace was getting more comfortable with the injury, enough at least to joke about it. That was progress, maybe. "Yeah, I don't think it'd matter what you were thinking about as long as you were both thinking it."

"I haven't really done free-running. Some climbing, though," he offered.

"I don't really know many Suns - mainly you and Peyton." And Peyton certainly seemed the type to just fling herself at things, and it seemed to work for her. But it seemed kind of rude, somehow, to bring up, so instead he just shrugged. "I bet you made a pretty good death hunter." Jordan seemed smart and organized and Horace would bet money on it that he could keept secrets with a straight face.

He rolled his shoulders tiredly. The adrenaline from the run was wearing off and, since Horace hadn't been sleeping well, he felt that tiredness return. Horace suppressed a yawn. "And I've never been climbing. But if you feel like running around and trying it sometime, let me know. There's a couple of places in the town I've been doing it."

"I've thought about transferring, actually, but I much prefer working for Allan." Jordan shrugged.

"Sounds like fun," he answered. "I'd like to give it a try. You done with your workout, or were you staying out here? I'm going to go in and get a shower and make myself some coffee."

"I've never actually met my division head, but I've heard horror stories - you know, the usual tentacle-bits, he's an eldritch horror from the deep, violence is his middle name, et cetera. So, unless I've got a good reason, I should probably keep it that way." As of right now, Horace was not a terribly ambitious guy. He wanted to actually get good at being a hunter before he tried more.

At the mention of going inside, he puased, mouth twisting. "Nah, I'm too tired for more today. Though, I was wondering... if, uh, I could ask your opinion on something sometime." He trailed off, and quelled the urge to nervously fidget. He thought Jordan could maybe some some good views, maybe. Or might be able to help sort things out. Or soemthing.

"No tentacle bits, don't know about eldritch horror from the deep, the violence part is accurate," Jordan confirmed. "Not seeking him out is a good survival tactic."

He paused to study Horace's expression. The guy looked nervous, or maybe worried; Jordan wasn't sure what he might be asking about, but if he could help, he would. "Sure. If you don't have duties or something, come by in like half an hour, forty minutes, and I'll even share coffee."
