‘W-what?’
‘What’s that?’ Teleri wondered to herself as she tried to stretch out and found that no matter what she did, she encountered soft reeds that would allow her to go no further.
With a faint frown the half-asleep filly tried again, extending one foreleg and then arching her neck, twisting her haunches and then stretching out a wing. She shifted and rolled and grumbled to herself as she was thwarted at each and every turn. No matter what she did all she felt was walls, flexing reeds that creaked and sighed with each movement. Now that she thought about it, they had always been there, but they seemed to be pressing in on her more than usual; no longer a comforting cocoon to dwell in. Now they felt like a sort of prison.
‘Go away.’ She thought crossly, pushing with her knees and having no luck in expanding the dark world to better suit her needs.
Awakening in this shadow-cool place was a rather strange thing, the filly decided. And part of that strangeness lay in the general location itself, in the fact that all she knew of this place was confined inside this dark, tiny world. Surely this couldn’t be all there was? Somewhere, somehow there must be more of something. More of everything, since there was a distinct lack of it here in this world of muffled shadows.
Vaguely she had the feeling she had been elsewhere, and was placed here when she was too young or too knew to recall any of the matter. That proved there was more, didn’t it? That feeling in her that said to go out. Wherever out was. Whatever was she supposed to do when she got there anyway? But she had been there, once, long ago it may have been. When her wings were mere buds at her back, her eyes not yet open.
But now she was older, was bigger, and apparently the world she was confined to refused to grow, refused to stretch or expand to accommodate her lengthening limbs or her need to stretch. It made her shift and fidget, moving and shifting as she strove to find a comfortable position. Maybe she would try to sleep again, to see if this enclosing space would go back to its larger self once she awoke the next time.
Then again, maybe she wouldn’t bother, not when it sounded like there was something outside of her dark world. Something waiting to be found, to be seen and heard with more clarity than she could manage in this dark space. Something she already knew, but wanted to meet all the same.
‘But this is home.’ She thought, hesitant as she rolled and gathered her feet under her. ‘This is all I know… What else is there?’
Only one way to find out.
Pushing her head up, Teleri smiled as the lid of the basket gave way with a whispering sigh, sliding back to allow her nose out into freedom. It also allowed a bright spear of white to pierce the dark, dazzling the young filly’s eyes.
What else was there?
Everything.

Beside her sister, resting at the bottom of a nest at ground level and lined with soft fur and littered with flower petals, another basket suddenly made a soft 'pop' noise as the wicker relaxed. A soft chirrup was heard over the bells and bangles in the tree branch above them in the private nursery nest, and a bird in the branches flitting up higher into the large oak as the baskets contents stirred from its enchanted sleep, rustling as she too attempted to untangle herself in such a small space. Claws found the edge of the basket and gently pawed at the weakened tines holding the lid on, the tines being found one by one by curious claws before a white muzzle poked out of the side, chirruping once more, chirping and nickering softly as she worked at freeing herself, wings halfheartedly attempting to flap and free herself from the confined space.
Her scent was familiar and comforting to the other Filly, so the claws were no need for alarm, even though a child wouldn't understand the dangers they could hold at their tips.
Eventually Young Avalyn's head popped all the way out of the basket, making the lid slide backwards as she looked around in awe and curiosity, eyes blinking at the shimmering beads, draping translucent scarves, colorful feathers, chimes and bells dangling low but still high above their reach in the quivering leaves of the majestic oak. Then her gaze lowered as she realized she wasn't alone and smiled brightly as her eyes met the mare that would be named Teleri's eyes, then leaned forward to sniff at her, noses almost touching as she did so with a soft babbling attempt at speaking the language spoken around the basket, though it mostly came out only as garble.
It had been a rather easy popping for the two, a little bit earlier than expected. The blue haired filly stretched her wings for balance as she stumbled upright, tripping over the edge of her basket to tumble against her sisters basket, squawking in surprise as her wings flapped in a big tangled mess and legs curled under her. She then chirruped again, smiling up at her sister from her new upside down position, the white haired mare's face framed by the color of the sky and the leaves of the trees and the rainbow of colors from the decorations in the branches.
"Ba?" She giggled, lifting a clawed foot up gently to smoosh her sisters snout playfully between two toes and play with her hair, legs still curled up against the tall sides of the nest, made to hold adults while they slept and keep foals from wandering off unexpectedly should they pop earlier than expected. They could see over the edges, but getting over the sides with their still awkward legs.

The jingling of bells below made a pale ear nested in a sea of peacock blue twitch, brows furrowing slightly as a glint of light pierced her eyes at an attempt to open. Vanmoriel Yawned, shifting slightly on the massive oaken treebranch far up on the trees, clawed hand going over her eyes. She wasn't expecting her baskets to pop until the end of the week, and the expectant mother had stayed up late the night before in a rush of inspiration.
----
The night before found her working madly as she glued carefully dried and pressed flowers and leaves to the stretched leather canvas, smearing a coat of gold down on the main focus area while the glue was still wet, the flowers and leaves radiating from the spot and edged with the fine precious metal.
As it had dried, she mixed her pigments, making the needed colors that were not already there. The mare spared no expense for her paints: While she often used more common materials, she was not afraid of using precious metals and minerals that other artists in the guild tended to avoid if it would create the better color, but it meant having to be careful to make her more expensive paints it only in small amounts to prevent waste. While she usually reserved lapis lazuli for important historical figures, such as mixing it with the purple feathers of the First Oracle, it was one of the few tones that, once mixed with another pigment, could capture most of her families blues. And, while her father could be done in less expensive tones, he was one of the few males she respected, and the family scene she wished to depict felt robbed with his blue being of a cheaper hue.
She finished her work just as the night sky began to lighten, returning to her baskets where they had been kept watch over by a nanny, and climbed up into the trees to try and get some sleep in a silk covered area she had set up for sleep, paint still smudged and smeared on her white fur.
---
"mmrn.." The bells chimed again, louder this time as she moved her hands to her ears, trying to ignore it, until a rustling of feathers near her face caused her to squint at the opening of the arboreal tent at the massive Eagle at the opening, "Chattahoochee, whaaat?" She yawned mid way, ears pinking slightly in embarrassment at how whiny her voice was, cracked with sleep.
The Eagle cleared her throat, feathery eyebrows twitching slightly in amusement, "Well, if you'd rather not be bothered I understand, however I thought you should know that two of your baskets have developed ahead of schedule and your chicks are stumbling about the-" The eagle flew up out of the way of the mouth of the tent, landing on the branch above as Vanmoriel, now wide awake, quickly skittered out of the tent, "-Nest."

"Early?" Vanmoriel lept down to the next lower branch, ignoring the simple rope and board latter that had been put up between the two to make ascending easier. Having lived in the Giant trees for over a decade, some of the old structures of the ancestral lands had started being built to make traversing the trees easier for those who already could, "They're not... Premature are they? Will they need new baskets?"
Worry ate at her gut as she quickly descended, skipping levels and skittering on the trunk as the Harpy eagle attempted to keep up
"Developed early, not popped prematurely" The messenger chuckled. She was pretty young herself -- still too young to be a mother or even be given an official profession, so had signed up to help to be a nest sitter for the time being, "I'm told it happens all the time -- In fact, its often more common than baskets popping at the same time."
Chattahoochee slipped further away from the tree so she could spiral down, landing roughly on the edge of the nest, chirruping at the fillies inside, "Hello beauties. Oh you're going to be such good fliers when you grow up...

Good Fliers? Vanmoriel's heart soared as she took a chance and leapt to a different tree to speed up her decent, leaping from its trunk to the ground so she can trot up to her own nest -- her first nest!
It hadn't quite hit her until this point, and she found herself overwhelmed as she teared up and laughed, wiping her eyes before reaching down to nuzzle the children, inspecting them to make sure they were whole. She smiled, clucking softly at them, pleased that she had two new daughters, now more exited than ever to find out what her third child's gender was.
And the wings! They both had three sets, Taking so strongly after their father appearance wise -- the draconic wings were a touch of a surprise, but not really unexpected with the horns their father had.
"They're so beautiful... " She whispered softly, before her tone changed, higher in pitch, "you're both beautiful... Chatta, could you go fetch one of the priestesses?" She watched as the young eagle took to the air, quickly turning east as soon as she passed the canopy, then turned her attention toward her children, "oh I'm so excited I've almost forgotten what I was going to name you! Lets see...."
Noting the standing filly was the third one born, she smiled, "Teleri Lindāi... Thats your name. Teleri.... Lindāi!" She smiled broader, touching her on the nose, "Teleri."
She then tickled her other child, who remained sprawled on her back and attempting to grab Vanmoriel's nose with her front feet, babbling the nonsensical talk that was common for foals fresh out of the basket that had been talked to. It was amazing to think that in two weeks, as long as they were spoken with actively and in full words and sentences rather than baby talk, they'd be speaking in full sentences.
Vanmoriel's voice hitched in her chest-- She looked so much like her father, so much like how she visualized the Great Mother. The name was fairly common in the flock, but she came to realize the name seemed to fit best here the most, "... Avalyn. Your name, is Avalyn." She smiled at the attempted mimic from her daughter, too focused on the shiny metal glued down the bridge of her muzzle to really be trying too hard, the name a little too 'Ababa" to be correct, "Av-aah-lyn."
She curled her feet in front of her chest, "Mama. I'm your mama."

Teleri sat upright in her basket, flailing about awkwardly as she tried to get her legs under her and her wings sorted. She paused to breathe in a disgruntled sigh, wings splayed over the edge of her basket as she considered her surroundings. Momentarily distracted by the various trinkets overhead, the white filly stretched her neck, muzzle craning toward the trailing beads and scarves and feathers that hung above her. They were of the most interest to her, whispering in the wind and shining in the sun as they did.
Of course, when her sister flailed out of her basket with an awkward squawk and a tumble of wings and legs, Teleri flailed again, her wings fluttering and flapping against the fibers and reeds. With her sister upside down beside her Tele craned her head out of the basket, whuffling at her sister's face and then dissolving into giggles. Whatever had just happened, it looked like fun.
"Aa." She returned happily, watching her sister's foot until it clapped around her nose for a second. "Mph!"
The next moment her muzzle was free and she was giggling, leaning into the claws that scritched at her mane. The touch was pleasant, once again stalling her from trying to sort out her legs. Maybe she'd just stay in her half-basket, letting her sister play with her hair. "S-s-s!"
The sudden sound of fluttering wings made Teleri flail in her basket, straightening out her forelegs until she was sitting upright, rump still firmly settled in the basket, white and black wings splaying out in all directions. She tilted her head at the eagle's appearance, thinking that the colors made her feel warm. The soft crooning tone of her chirps were reassuring, making the white filly grin and tilt her head questioningly.
Fliers?
The appearance of her mother made the filly shift again, rocking her basket but not yet lifting her rump in an attempt to clamber out of it. She craned her head down to burble excitedly at her sister, then looked at the mare again, whistling in soft delight. As the mare drew closer Tele renewed her efforts to find her feet, planting her hooves outside of the basket before making her way into a shaky-stand. She leaned toward the brush of her mother's muzzle, nibbling at her affectionately as she half-mumbled the name given to her. "T-t-tele..."
"Ahma?" She murmured. "Ahmama...."

"Abababa" Avalyn giggled, putting her front claws on her muzzle to see if she had jingley and shiny bits like her mother, before pulling them away again to wiggle her toes, really noticing them for the first time. Rolling over, she remained seated as she put her large feet on the lip of Teleri's basket to inspect them, before getting distracted once again by her sister and mother, "Tele! Tele ah Ahma..."
She then, feet still on Teleri's basket, tried to push herself up onto her feet.
Fortunately for Vanmoriel's desire to save the baskets as mementos, the simple white with black and red tribal markings basket that had stained itself to match its contents sturdy enough that it didnt crack and break under the weight of her feet or tear under her claws.
Unfortunately for Avalyn and her sister, it was at a slight angle in the nest, giving Avalyn the leverage to send her sister tumbling on top of her and the basket flopping on top of both of their heads as the red-footed filly honked in surprise, once more on her back with her legs in the air at either side of her sister, hooved legs caught between her wings and her feet caught between the wings of her sister, "Ahma! Tele ah Abababa! Ahmaaaa!"
Vanmoriel laughed, making a playful mock gasp at them, "Avalyn! Did you and Teleri go boom?"
She picked the basket up off of them, collecting the two spent ones and putting them aside before the mares could damage them, especially after they had managed to escape them so cleanly -- It was common for flock members to shred and gnaw their baskets open rather than waiting for them to unlatch naturally or picking the weakening seal -- before helping them untangle, "Did you two go boom?"
The moment of childlike panic was broken by their moms laughter and humorous question, causing Avalyn to giggle merrily once more and pull her sister closer in a hug, "Teleri oh boom, Ahma!"
She grinned at her sister with closed eyes and parted jaws, her two front teeth mostly missing, still not grown fully in, though the sharp canines of her milk teeth were grown in, "Teleri oh boom ah Abalyn!"

Heart glowing proud in her chest, their mother stroked their cheeks, still chuckling softly as she once more found herself amazed -- She and her sisters had been too tired when they popped from their baskets to speak so shortly after, but weeks later were talking full sentences due to the constant training and time spent with them. She could barely remember this time, mostly vague memories of playing and being talked to and words being repeated constantly by the many members of the cave they were born in to get it into their mind, before they were ready to really start venturing out beyond the entrance of their cave, but seeing how quick the minds of young soquili were, especially when carefully spoken to regularly while in their enchanted slumber in the baskets, at picking up the language sometimes.
They had to be to grow up to fully functional adults after three whole years, but it was still wondrous to think. And as a mother, she couldn't help but feel that perhaps her children were above average, "Yes. Teleri go boom on Avalyn. And you went boom too!"

From her place half in and half out of her basket, Teleri craned her head toward her mother. Lipping at the silken muzzle extended to her, she was distracted by the glimmer of gold on her mother's face and the sweet chime of the bells in her forelock and elsewhere. "Ahamama- ing!"
The white filly tilted her head to consider her sister, ears swiveling curiously as Avalyn tapped at her own nose. It seemed gentler than the way she grabbed Teleri's nose previously, but the white filly didn't mind... Wondering instead if her sister new how to get the shiny bauble like their mother was wearing. Shiny things were her favorite, especially if they made pretty noises like the ones their mother had.
"Ava!" She countered when her sister said her name, snuffling at Avalyn's clawed feet when they braced against her basket. Her head jerked up in surprise as the basket shifted slightly, but it was far too late to do more than squeal in concern and alarm as she was abruptly pitched over and the basket followed her. With her rump half in the air and her legs tangled, Tele squawked as Avalyn honked, her wings flapping weakly and tangling with her sister's hooves. "AHMAAA! BOOM!"
Carefully extricating herself from her sister's wings and shakily finding her hooves, Teleri leaned against Avalyn and giggled softly. "Boom Ava, boom~boom~boom~ah."
She trailed off into amused whisperings, nibbling affectionately at her sister's cheek and jaw. "Ava, boom you!"
"Ahmaaaa." The white filly crooned, leaning into the silken touch on her cheek and whickering lovingly. "Boom more?"
She eyed the third basket, sitting so still and quiet, and leaned over to poke it with her nose. "Boom?" Word Count: 285

Vanmoriel chuckled a little, though she did feel somewhat bitter sweet about her daughter addressing the basket, "no Teleri -- They're not ready to 'boom' yet. You came out a little early. I should let you out of the basket..."
Reaching down, she gently scooped up Teleri in one of her front claws, lifting her up over the lip of the nest. Still holding her, she sat down so she could lean against the edge of the sturdy wood weaving to inspect her child. The hooves were solid, sturdy and a rich red like fresh blood, yet so dainty - she'd never seen a hooved child since she stopped being a colt herself up close, and it was a marvel to think such tiny hooves would grow into powerful feet.
Father will need to make her a set of claws to wear so she can practice, in case she wishes to become a huntress... The artist mused softly smiling as she booped her on the nose with the stiff yet yielding furred pad of her finger, careful not to put the claw too close,"Boop! Down you go, Teleri. Stay close I have something for you and your sister."
Setting down the hooved filly, she then barely managed to react in time to catch Avalyn before she tumbled over the edge after making a leap, "Ah! Oh my Avalyn, so impatient! You're going to be a handful, aren't you?"

Giggling once again the white and red dominated filly wiggled her fingers and toes in the air as her mom held her up before letting her legs go limp, enjoying the way they felt stretching out before curling them up tight against her and trying to flap her wings, the awkward flapping making it difficult for her to be held and nearly tumbled from her mothers grip. She was then pulled tight against her mothers chest, wings tucked tight against her. "Ahma! Down."
She was so eager to get down so she could play and stretch her legs, explore the area near the nest, she could barely contain herself. Spending so much time locked away, and having such an easy pop from the basket left her full of energy, wanting nothing more than to run about and frolic. She spent enough time resting, she wanted to run and try her claws out on something like the scratched up trees and pronk about and kick her feet up in the air and learn how her wings worked. And she couldn't do that with her feet in the air and wings wrapped tight against her, "Ahma? Abawyn go down?"
"Shh.. Shh. I'll put you down once you calm down, Avalyn." The young mother turned her to face her, glancing over to make sure Teleri was staying close, before touching Avalyn's back feet down, "You need to stay with me, understood?"
After getting 'stay wit Ahma' from the little ball of energy, she carefully set her down, watching her to make sure she sat down. She looked like an excited puppy, her tail swishing side to side as she watched her mother expectantly.
Nodding, she reached up into the tree and took down two decent sized bells on beaded chains. It may have been a tradition of her grandfather rather than the mares of her family, but it fit well and was designed to invoke the blessings and protection of the spirits.
She latched the clasps before hanging the necklaces around each of the girls necks, "Bells for Blessings."
Avalyn's eyes got really big as she watched her mom 'play' with the bells, little heart pounding a million miles per hour in excitement. She said she had something for them. Were they getting shiny noise-thing like she had? The shiny noise-things weren't for the big leafy thing but for them?!
She was practically vibrating as the beaded chain went over her neck, and as soon as her mothers hands were away she crammed her chin tight against her neck and pulled back backing up a little, trying to see it. "Bewoh?"
Finally she lifted a claw to feel it out, and the tip tinged against the shiny metal. She shook her head, sending it jingling rapidly in a vibrant jingling. Then she was off bouncing around the nest and flapping her wings as she sang merrily, trotting around her sister and mother, "bewoh bewoh for Abawyn!"
She trotted up to her sister, front claws sprawling out in front of her as she stopped to suddenly for her speed, eyes bright and excited, "Teleri have Bewoh too!" She then lifted a claw up and made it ping before running off around the little clearing.

Teleri snuffled again at the third basket, lipping at the reeds and attempting to whisper into the basket while keeping an eye on her Ama. "No ready? Awww come boom! Boom fun."
She gave a whistling shriek when she was suddenly scooped up, but stretched her muzzle to nibble at her mother's jaw as she was considered. She tried to run in air for a moment, flailing her legs before becoming distracted by being booped on the nose. Dissolving into giggles, the white filly stood where she was set down and stayed close, though she craned her head around to nibble curiously at the nearest twigs.
"Amah Amah! Ava, Boop too!" She mumbled, growing impatient and spinning in a little circle before splaying her wings wide. Teleri watched with interest as her mother reached up into the tree, stretching her neck as far as it would go as she reached for the shiny things that made such lovely noises. "Bew?"
She hummed thoughtfully. "Bew for bwess? Bwess good?"
Teleri grinned and flicked her tail at the mention of her name, leaning over to bump one of Avalyn's bells. "Ava pwetty with bew-.... bewoh?"
She didn't really know what the words her mother said actually meant... Though she certainly felt like the shiny things with such sweet sounds were good. Lucky? Well, pretty and sounded nice, anyway. And as Avalyn sprinted off her bells gave a mary chime, which made the hooved filly leap after her.
"Ava!" She giggled as she capered across the grass on bright red hooves. "Ava pwetty bews!" Word Count: 261
