A Bowshot From Her Bower-Eaves

The singing is what she hears first, just a simple song. Very rarely do the farmers down in the fields sing, not when they have to work so hard all day and that tended to require more energy than it sometimes seemed worth. So when a clear voice floats up to the tower, Abbi listens and she grows curious.
On quiet, bare feet she tip toes across the tower floor and dares not raise her head above the window threshold more than just the tip of her nose. From there she can see without being seen in return, not that anyone spared much of a glance at the tower.

A knight stands in the field below, making easy work of a small shadow he engages in battle.
And he sings.
Abbi finds this entertaining, both the battle because he fights so well and because she has never seen someone look so at ease around a creature of darkness. Just as she has gotten comfortable on the floor the knight is finished, grinning from his victory.

Before she has time to react he turns and looks at the tower, as though he has known she was watching, and raises a hand.
The girl first gasps, but regains enough composure to jump up and wave back at him, grinning and wanting to congratulate his success but lacking the courage to shout. Somehow this is fine, and the knight turns to continue on his way.

Abbi immortalizes the fight with a small tapestry that she weaves as she hums and hangs in her room.

She Loosed The Chain And Down She Lay

--They did not give her any time to speak, they took her from her Queen and shackled what they could of her.
They did not listen to her screaming, her begging, her demands or pleas.
They did not care that the restraints hurt, that they burned her, that everything was frightening.

When she is unchained, she is so exhausted that she can only lie down. But they are not done and she has no energy to fight the twisting and pulling, and she simply lets it happen.

But they put another chain on her.

Shadows Of The World Appear

Things are simple, things are boring, but it is the life she has.

Her father is stern, though gentle in his own ways and choosey about his dotings, but Abbi knows he is good even if she knows it is not wholly good. There is little spoken of her mother, only an old painting in one of the lower rooms of the tower to go by, but the girl decides she was very pretty and probably very much good.

There is no one else, because the people who pass by under the tower do not count. They are far away things, just outside the realm of proper understanding but Abbi likes to watch them come and go.

Things are simple, things are boring, but of what she knows she enjoys her life.

Singing In Her Song She Died

The lower rooms of the tower were not off limits to Abbi, save for when her father was vacant from the building, and a healthy dose of curiosity often drove her down to the lower floors.
One room resembles a dragon's hoard (she's never seen one but she has read about them and feels quite certain on this point), piled up with forgotten bits of furniture and knick knacks and mismatched pieces. It is a favorite hobby of the girl's to pick a corner and see how much she can organize before the size of the task overwhelms her.

One day her hand brushes against something golden and a vision comes upon her. There is darkness, or it might be smoke, but everything hurts. That is what she remembers once she is back to rights, because visions are supposed to be images and she feels all of this intensely. There is a deep ache in her muscles, she can barely move on. And worst of all, someone stands above her.
They swing their sword--

The girl moves back and she is free, but the pain in her chest radiates to her fingertips. A little noise leaves her, and it is a long time before she ventures back into the room in case she glimpses more grim visions.

The Broad Stream Bore Her Far Away

He tells her to go, he pushes her, and tells her that there is a path she can take that will lead her to safety.
The village she has glimpsed is burning, the smoke rises into the sky like a great black exclamation point of warning. Abbi stares at it and cannot drag her gaze away until her father lifts her off her feet and staggers forward. She isn't heavy, but he is so frantic that he cannot walk right. He sets her down harshly, he pushes her, he tells her to go.

And Abbi's first steps from the tower are not of her own choosing, though she sometimes thought they never would be. Her first steps are of fear, she has to flee from the darkness encroaching.
So Abbi runs, she looks back only once, but she runs down to Camelot and to safety.

A Red-crossed Knight Forever Kneel'd

After she sees the knight fight the shadows in the field, Abbi becomes dedicated to the idea of one day donning armor and weapon to do the same. Perhaps she would not go near towers if she could help it, but she would fight.

Like a child the teen practices in her room, a broken chair leg her weapon that she brandishes like a sword, clumsy and swinging but trying all the same. She promises herself on a bent knee that she will help, that she will make a difference, that she will be like that knight and save the day. It is a bit like pretend, but it is a form of hope she'd not had before and Abbi clings to it tightly.
