IC
The pattern in Dezani's life seemed to have been pretty consistent so far. His father would send him out to interact with others and do work as a beast tamer, and Dezani would use his pad and paper to 'say' what needed to be said. And this continued for some time, until that morning.
His father was to send him on another errand. This time to another beast tamer to complete his task. It was to be a trade of sorts, but Dezani's father reminded Dezani before he could leave - "use your words this time, my vendors are getting tired of this", and that "at some point you have to grow up and stop using that pad and pencil"; as if that wasn't enough he added "if you keep going like this you'll never be a proper beast tamer". It would seem it was time for Dezani to speak up if he was to have any control over his life.
Quest Tasks ||. This quest is meant to push Dezani to speak. ||. The quest should begin with his father pushing for him to go out on his next errand for him. ||. Dezani will have to speak in order to get his point across. ||. Dezani should convince his father somehow that he will not be a beast tamer and that he will instead be a lancer. ||. The quest should end with Dezani being relieved of the pressures of becoming a beast tamer like his father and with the realization that he will need to speak up more often without his pad and pencil to hide behind.

Part One: The Problem
Word Count: 1,002
“Dezani, I need to you head back over to Sauti to drop off a few beasts? Do you think you can do that for me? My vendors are pushing for the delivery to be swift, and for the love of the gods when you get to them you need to speak to them. None of this writing things down in your journal nonsense you seem to think is okay. They expect to be doing business with a man, not a boy who can't get out of his own little world long enough to do what he needs to. How do you expect to be a great beast tamer when you can't even interact with others?” Sapheryn scolded his son, causing Dezani to roll his eyes at the man who he was supposed to call his father.
Some father he was, always getting onto him and never reading what he had to say. He didn't want to be a beast tamer, he never had and never would. He had shown him that several times, but the man just kept pushing him towards it even when he protested! Now he expected him to go and deal with his vendors. Couldn't the man do it himself instead of sending him for once? He had just gotten back from his last job and had no desire to go whatsoever. He just wanted to train with Raiha so he could start working with her on how to be a suitable mount. If he kept being sent on these silly errands of his father's he'd never get the time he needed. He hated everything about being a beast tamer and while his father seemed to be happy doing it he wasn't. He just needed to get that through to him somehow, but that had been a big failure so far. His father talked at him, not to him. He refused to even acknowledge he was communicating when he wrote it down, but it was how he spoke to others! He wasn't comfortable speaking any other way. He always broke out into a nervous sweat and felt lightheaded when he did it, even with his own father. He just didn't understand him, and he really doubted he ever would. He was coming of age and he knew he was expected to start helping even more with taming, and potentially take over his father's business, but he refused to. He wouldn't live his life doing something he hated, even if he made his father angry. He just needed to figure out a way to get it across to him.
“Dezani? Dezani are you even listening to me?” Sapheryn's voice broke into his thoughts as the man grew more and more irritated at him. “There you go off into your little dream world again. Now then, I've made up a map for the location they'll be. You've been able to find your way with all the other maps so this should be no different than the other times.” Dezani was going to tell his father something. That was all there was to it. He was tired of being pushed around by him and treated like he was a child. Sure he was still younger, but he was an adult by their standards in age. He could do things on his own just fine, he'd proven that a thousand times, and yet his father just wouldn't listen to him.
You know if you say something to him he might.
Oh of course he wouldn't. He never listened to anything. He never had. He would never know what his mother had seen in him when they got together, and he never would. He never had the chance to interact with her, and he was sure his father blamed that on him as well. She had died because of him after all. If she hadn't he was sure things would be different, but there was no way to tell and thinking about it was pointless. Nothing would help their current situation other than pushing for change. He was just afraid to do it. While he had told his father before he didn't want to be a beast tamer, now he actually knew what he wanted to be. With his goal set matters seemed even more pressing than before about what he needed to do and how he would go about doing. His father would never listen to him while he wrote things down, so it seemed his only option was to struggle and speak to him without having a panic attack it seemed.
“F....father...” Dezani forced out, feeling his cheeks heat up as he spoke. It was always like this even with people he enjoyed communicating with. Araie and Syqvara had to deal with his blushing and stuttering he tried to talk, but they weren't intimidating like his father was.
“What was that, Dezani? Did you actually say something for once? My ears must be deceiving me because you don't speak because you're a child.” Oh look just what he thought would happen did. His father was just mocking him more like usual. He was so sick of it and the more he did it the angrier he got. He just wanted to be left alone.
“Stop...” he tried to say to him, but was quickly cut off once more.
“When you can speak to me like a real man is when I'll listen, Dezani. Now go on and hurry off to meet with Xakami. He won't wait too long and we need the money.” With that his father had dismissed him. He wouldn't let it stand though. Not this time. He would have to speak to get his point across with his father. Fine. He'd do it and prove to him he was an adult worthy of listening to. Then he'd tell him how much he hated him and beast taming. No quill and journal for this. Just struggling to speak to him like he needed to.

Part Two: The Solution
Word Count: 1,090
“No father! It's your turn to listen to me!” Dezani shouted, standing up straighter as he spoke. It was obvious that he wasn't used to saying anything, especially when it came to his father. His voice cracked and the shaking of his hands as he clenched them gave away just how afraid he was of his father's backlash. He had never stood up to the man, always doing exactly what he said without any sort of complaint. The only time he had ever wavered from his father's direct instructions is when he was talking with others he had met, or trying to avoid going straight home. Now he had done it, and his father didn't seem too pleased at all. Both of them had their fists clenched, and the look on his father's face screamed that he wanted to shoot back a response. He wouldn't allow it though. Not when he still had the motivation to get his point across for once in his life.
"You continue to treat me like I don't know what I'm doing, even though I've done every job without your guidance. You claim I'm a child, yet I've done more in this short time than you've done since I was born. Sure, I have issues speaking, it's hard to get a word in when you say everything for me to begin with. So why not just stick to using a pad and pencil when I can never speak to you or anyone else normally without being treated badly anyway!"
"Dezani I-” The younger Leafling cut him off, refusing to stop himself now. If he paused for even a second to let him speak he was sure he'd lose his steam and panic too much to continue. This was his only chance to get everything across to him and he wasn't going to screw it up. His father still stood there like he wanted to say something, but he seemed to have stopped trying to interrupt him for the moment.
"No, I don't want to hear anything you have to say. I'm sure you'll just berate me again or tell me I'm still a child. The truth is I hate beast taming, I hate doing the jobs you send me on, and I hate you at this moment. I don't care about beast taming whatsoever and you're going to have to deal with the fact that I'm not going to follow in your footsteps like you want me to. I'm going to go and train to become a rider! I'm going to be so great and prove to you that I'm not a child. I'm going to do my own thing and follow my own path without you ordering me around."
Feeling like he had finally said all he could on the subject, Dezani took a few steps back out of his father's face and hoped for the best. He had done what he was determined to do, and now the only thing he could really do was leave if his father didn't accept what he had said. He was ready to jump and run if he needed to, but he wouldn't want to if he had a choice. Yes, he and his father didn't get along and most of the time he absolutely hated him, but he was still the only family he had and he didn't want to lose him if he had a choice in the matter. He would rather try to fix their relationship if he could.
"That's really what you think then, huh?" Sapheryn finally said, a slight grin gracing his features. The response in general threw him off, but for him to be grinning as well? Was he mocking him, or was he generally amused by what he said? Either way it caused him to take a step closer towards the door and away from the man in front of him.
“Yes, yes it is. I want to become a rider, and if you don't approve then I will have to leave and never come back. I'm following my dream whether you want me to or not. I hate beast taming,” Dezani replied, making sure to state how much he hated beast taming once more. Sapheryn laughed, stepping forward and pulling his son into a hug. It was a bit awkward, especially since Dezani couldn't remember the last time he and his father had hugged. Or if they ever had really.
“You are so much like your mother it hurts. She would be so proud of you, son,” he muttered, patting him on the back. His mother? He'd never known her, and to hear that made him smile. He always hoped to make her proud even if she wasn't with them anymore. The only thing he did have of hers was his journal he used to speak with.
“So....I can be a rider?” Dezani asked, hoping that all of this hadn't amounted to nothing. He had brought up his mother and said she would be proud, so that had to be good right? He wouldn't say that for nothing. He hadn't brought her up in years, not since he had been given the journal.
“Yes, you can become a rider. I won't stop you if that's really what you want to do. As long as you are responsible about it you can do it,” Sapheryn nodded, ruffling Dezani's hair. “It was nice hearing you back talk me though. How about you speak more, and not just when I've pushed you to your breaking point, hm? It's nice hearing your voice, plus eyes are getting old boy! It's hard to read your small print.”
His father had actually agreed to him becoming a rider. He never thought he would live to see the day that happened, and yet here it was. He would get to train Raiha and eventually once she grew up she would be his mount. No more beast taming, no more dealing with his father's vendors. Just him doing what he had dreamed of. It had taken all of his effort to speak to his father, but he had done it and it had worked out better than anything else had. He was still nervous about speaking, but now he knew that speaking normally instead of using his journal to speak did have its advantages. He would just have to continue to speak even if he wasn't confident about it yet. Maybe then others would listen to him more like his father had.
