Convenience
Chris didn't meet him, so much as see a strange knight walking away from Chel as he returned. He looked at her, a silent question.
"Lancelot."
Chris pursed his lips. "He let you go?" Clearly a conversation with a Great Knight meant they'd been caught doing something they should have. But he was wrong.
"Didn't get caught. He's recruiting."
"That's odd."
"That's convenient. They pay."
Chris hummed quietly. That was something to consider, for sure. A salary meant that their life on the road would be over - if even for the short period it took them to build up enough wealth to last. But knighthood was also more conspicuous than he was comfortable being. They'd have to weigh the pros and cons carefully. Make a game plan.

Shackled
She screams for mercy, but none of the faces looking back at her seem to understand. Their expressions are twisted with disgust and hatred, or worst of all pure indifference.
The chains hurt.
Her screams change, become screeches of agony as her body twists and contorts. She's terrified of what's happening to her but she can't stop it. She's powerless against the people trapping her. She's overcome with emotions as she struggles against what's happening.
And then she's nothing but a shield on the ground, sealed away.

Collapse
He's panting so heavily his lungs are burning, but they can't stop. They have to make it to the forest, or at least to a nearby farm where they can effectively hide. They can't be found.
He grabs Chel's wrist and helps haul her over a stone wall. Her expression isn't as panicked as he knows his is, but he can see it in her eyes. She's trying to be strong about this but it's the scariest thing they've ever done.
Chel grabs the back of his collar as he trips and hauls him back to his feet. They don't have time to fall, they have to keep going.

Training
Chel forces him back with intense swings of her practice sword. Chris is just barely able to block them, and certainly unable to counter them. Her face is too grim and determined for a young woman, a child really, and it tell Chris that she's planning something. He just doesn't know what yet.
Another swing and his sword goes tumbling out of his hand. Chel points the wooden tip of her weapon at his throat, and Chris's shoulders slump.
"I'm never going to get this."
"You will. We'll keep practicing," she insists.
"I'm tired of practicing! I'm awful at this."
"No you're not. Come on Chris, we have to learn this. Please."
He doesn't understand why she's so insistent - they're too high blood to need to fight - but her pleading makes him pick up the sword again. If she's really planning something, he's going to trust her.
"Okay. One more time."
