He was halfway through the door before he noticed it was sunny on the other side. The sky had never been blue, he knew that, but this fantasy was warm and welcome after so long in the dark.

A Great Knight sparred on the hilltop at the end of the road. Lancelot. Mmur had spoken to him before, briefly, and now he wanted to become one too. It was that simple. If he worked hard enough, he could shed the stigma of the farm, who he chose to spend time with, everything. It was a valiant dream.

He picked up his flail, aiming to join them, but the weapon he held in his hand was not what he expected, especially when he realized it was a hand and it was squeezing his back. The sun wasn't shining, or rather it was, he was just under a tree.

"I..."

"Don't speak. I will not hurt you."

They remained silent, staring at each other, hands clasped for five full minutes. Eventually, the creature ducked its head. "I apologize. You may speak now. I meant that you shouldn't cry out, not that you shouldn't speak at a—"

"What are you?" Mmur loosened his grip on the monster's hand and brought tentative fingers to his feathery face. It was difficult to see exactly what stood in front of him, but Mmur got an impression of a rainbow, despite the swirling mass of black and grey he was actually confronted by.

"I am an ercinee. I do not with to hurt you."

"Yes. No. You don't seem like you do."

The creature tensed. Looked over his shoulder.

"I must go."

"Wait!"

He shouldn't have gotten so close. The humans gave chase, grabbing Waldorf by his wings and hair and tying him up. There was a sharp pain in some unnamed place in his chest. The world flickered. He didn't know where he was. Who he was. He was dark and cold, waiting for someone to speak to him again.

Mmur shook his head. Lies. All of it. Merlin was trying to confuse things, but it wouldn't work. He tightened his fingers around Waldorf's grip and ventured into the fray.
