Who: Anastacia, Oliver, and Zeke When: May 27th, 2015 Where: Barnes and Noble; Durem Mall Weather: Unseasonably humid outside; climate controlled perfection inside
They had gone out for one reason or another, but on a hot day like today, it only made sense to end up at a place cooled to comfort for a short reprieve. Zeke had mentioned something about a book he wanted to buy, so after a short stint of window shopping at other stores, he and Anya had made their way to the Durem Mall's branch of Barnes and Noble to see if the vet could do just that.
Anya hadn't been much of a reader of late. Since the weather turned nice, the Frei was more often than not spending her days out and about rather than cooped up indoors. Even if her excursions only amounted to sunning herself in the backyard at home, she was more focused on getting out and about more than she was bringing things with her most of the time.
Today, at least, she had brought her bag with her and some money in case she wanted to make a purchase. So far window shopping had yielded little more than a few snapped pics on her cellphone for later use on her end (why buy something when she could make it? ) but now that she and her Guardian were in the monstrous store of books, perhaps that would change.
Pointing to a generalized area where he would be, the vet split from his ward to go find that book he was so hard up for. Anya lingered where he left her for a moment but then gave her long wings a flick and floated off through the nearest crop of shelves. 'Mystery/Thriller' placards quickly caught her eye and she wrinkled her nose at them. The section next to that one got a better response - she floated right up to the shelves and snagged the first interesting cover she saw in 'Fiction & Literature'.

Oliver breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped into the air-conditioned bookstore and moved to the side so others behind him could pass him by. The weather outside had taken a drastic turn for the warm it seemed, something he was both thankful for and a little embarrassed about. He'd dressed himself for low sixties, not high seventies, he probably looked so silly in this coat. The professor shook his head to himself as he placed the bags he'd been carrying down and quickly undid his coat, before tying it neatly at his waist. There, now he at least looked rational, but what was it that he'd come into the bookstore for, again? He didn't need books or suppli-
"Ah, yes, Devin." He realized, rolling his eyes. "This heat's got me losing my brain, I swear."
His nephew had called him bright and early this morning, probably around the wise hour of five AM, not that Oliver had been alive enough to actually check the time. Though, the franticness of the teen's voice had more or less startled Oliver into a form of consciousness that could only be described as the jolt of energy you got when someone called to tell you that they were in hospital. It was only after six or so sputtered questions that Oliver realized that his nephew wasn't in mortal danger, but needed supplies for his finals in two days. He was short on pencils, clean erasers, and film, but had made it sound as if he were dying, the complete and utter opposite of his father. Oliver couldn't remember a time where his brother, Thatcher, ever got worried about his schoolwork, which assured him that such a thing had never happened.
Once he'd re-situated the bags onto his arms again, Oliver set off in search of the things Devin had requested. It was easy to find a bulk package of pencils and erasers, but the film was a different story. Barnes and Noble was a bookstore, not an electronics store, he'd have to go somewhere else to find the film it seemed. He sighed at the thought and rolled his shoulders, his eyes turning toward the shelves. Hm, maybe they had a new mystery series about? It would be nice to get something to read out on the porch now that the weather was warming up, and he really didn't need to be with Devin until later on... A quick nose around couldn't hurt.
"A Crime of Tragedy? Hm." He mused, his hands mulling over the cover of new release. It looked interesting enough, but something he'd look for at the library once they'd gotten a copy. Perhaps a book in another section would be worth a glance? He coiled his lips to the side and moved toward the next row of shelves, titled 'fiction and literature', and peered through the selection. The first row held a few books he'd already read, something that had him thinking it would be best just to go and come back another time, until an old favorite of his with a new cover caught his attention. However, as he reached to pluck it off the shelves, the person beside him beat him to it.
"Oh, excuse me!" He said, turning to face Anya. "I didn't realize you were there! Pardon me if I-"
His voice trailed off as soon as he realized that the woman next to him was floating. Wha-how-How was she doing that? He studied her a moment, before realizing just how much he was staring, and quickly diverted his gaze to the book in her hand.
"That's one of my favorite stories, I highly recommend it!" He stammered, taking a breath. "It's really a beautiful story."

Just as she grabbed the first book to catch her eye someone else entered the vicinity. They almost collided and would have, had they both not pulled back at the last second. Anastacia's wings were a black blur as she scrambled to right herself in the air, clutching the book to her chest as if it were the one thing whose weight was keeping her from toppling over backward.
"Be--" Her gaze landed on the man who had nearly run into her just as his apology graced her ears. He ogled her like many humans did upon first encountering a Raevan, seemingly lost for a few precious seconds before the mind caught up with the eyes and slammed into it like a semi into a bridge support. "Careful."
The word came out different than it would have in the past. Where it would have been flat and full of disdain, now it was lilted but not without a little tremor to it all the same. She wasn't sure he heard what she had said, not when the semi bounced off the bridge and went right into rambling on about books.
"Ah..." She wasn't sure how to respond, save for gripping the book tighter to herself. Whiplash wasn't a new concept for Anastacia, but she never expected it when it did arise.
Luckily, perhaps, that was when Zeke reappeared.
"Look Anya! They have my book!"
He came bounding up the aisle like a giddy toddler with a large white hardback in hand. Zeke didn't seem to realize the situation at first, at least not until he came to a stop and saw the man standing across from his ward. He looked between the two, focusing mainly on Anya and her apparent discomfort. The grin he was wearing started to fade.
"Everything okay?"

Be... Careful. Yes, Oliver should have been, then he might've had more time to... Process who he was talking to. Instead, he'd gone and bumped into her and made a fool of himself. The professor straightened himself out, noting Anya's discomfort, and immediately started to fiddle with his tie. A nervous habit of his, not one particularly subtle or charming, but distracting enough to settle his mind.
And then Zeke appeared. Oliver couldn't help but linger upon Zeke's hair a moment, before quickly returning to the situation at hand.
"Ah, oh!" He exclaimed, giving a sheepish look in Anya's direction. "We were reaching for the same book and knocked into one another! I really do apologize if I started you, miss!"

For once she was happy to see Zeke appear like he did as it allowed her to slip away from the man who had bumped into her to the vicinity where her Guardian now stood. Here she could collect herself and was quickly able to do so, although she did not do it behind the man like a child hiding behind father's legs.
"Is that so?" The sheepish man's words made a brow raise on Zeke's face but it was Anya's quick float to his own side that sent the other one upward too. He watched his Frei, let her have a moment to collect herself - as it was clear to him that was what she was doing - and then directed his words to her. "Did he bump into you, Anya?"
After her moment had come and gone and the whiplash subsided a little, she found she still had a voice. What's more, the spider queen saw no reason to lie on this one. Accidents happened and it was more the fact that he had launched into a conversation right after running into her that had thrown her through the loop than anything else. She was physically unharmed. The Frei looked at her Guardian and nodded.
"Yes." And then, to Oliver: "Apology accepted, but you shouldn't be running through a store."
That earned everyone in the general vicinity a laugh as Zeke started up. It had been a long, long time since he had heard Anya chide anyone!
"Well that settles that then!" He shifted his book over to his left hand and held out his right for a shake. "No harm done, sir! Name's Zeke and this is Anastacia. Nice to meet you!"

Oliver, try as he may, still couldn't keep his hands from reaching for his tie and, thus, moved to shove them in his pockets. However, as soon as he was distracted enough again, his hands found their way back to his tie. Why did he have to be blessed with such an awkward nervous habit?
His hands finally found his sides when Anya addressed him, and he dipped his head slightly in shame. He didn't recall himself running, but he couldn't argue with the fact that she had a point, it was unsafe to run in a store. Teal eyes lifted from the floor with the same sheepishness as before, only for it to fall away into a grin as Zeke held out his hand to shake.
"Oh, good, I was worried!" He admitted, letting a laugh of his own slip. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Zeke and Anastacia! I'm Oliver!"
He paused, briefly, and offered Anya a smile.
"And might I say that Anastacia is a very pretty name! I haven't heard it used by someone in quite a while."Ravina Loki Forgive me, and this dork, for being late! D|
