In front of him stood two doors. They were the only things tarnishing the endless expanse of white, and he gazed between them. They both called to him... Fragments of memories drifting to him and flashing through his senses.

Yuki was granted with a flicker of the mark that he bared, the image of a woman who to him looked familiar. He felt angry, almost, as if she reminded him of someone. Yet, there was a strange comfort in this memory...
Approval. Their mutual hatred of Merlin, the man who had forced them to do his bidding. Although, her rage toward the man felt somehow even stronger than his own.

It rang through his mind, clear and vivid, and he cursed himself for wanting so desperately to kill his Queen.

Yuki remembered defending him. Not because he wanted him to live, but because he believed it was not his place to determine who deserved death. Not after such anger had already consumed him once.
He still had no idea, even now, if it had been the correct choice.

Yuki's weight fell back, a strong fist clutching the collar of his tunic and jerking him backward. Away from the precipice that he'd been standing at... Leaning over. A breath away from letting gravity pull him down.
He was startled. Angry that someone had intervened. His life was none of their business! The peasant glared up from his spot on the ground, where he'd staggered and landed on his backside. Jaw set, he wanted to shout.
But his throat was too tight to let him speak. Not just from his grief, but the shock of seeing the Great Knight on his mount. He hadn't heard the pounding of hoof beats coming toward him. Now, he heard the sound of many coming as the knights that had flanked Lancelot rushed to catch up with him.
"Would they have wanted it to come to this?"
Yuki found his voice, then, but not his understanding of what the man's question implied.
"What are you talking about?"
"Would they approve? That you survived, only to selfishly throw your life away?"
Selfish? The question offended him, at first. Just as quickly, though, he realized the truth in it. His life wouldn't have been robbed from him like all of the others. He had lived to make the decision almost carried through. He would have made the choice to die of his own free will. For nothing aside from to end his own weak existence.
"If you seek enlightenment, you are just as unlikely to find it stumbling blind and alone as you are to find it at the bottom of that cliff."

He couldn't escape. Despite how desperately he'd tried. Clawing and kicking to rid himself of attackers and the chains that bound him had proved fruitless, serving only to draw him toward exhaustion.
Expecting a weapon to impale or crush, the pain that suddenly ripped and burned through his body was difficult to rightly process. He knew he was screaming, thought he was struggling, but his body was no longer his... His form no longer his.
Oddly, the pain began to ebb away. The anxiety washed away, a calm nothingness overtaking his consciousness...
Was this what it felt like to die?

"I'm sorry," he was saying softly. "But I don't imagine that we will see one another again. Not for a while."
Yuki couldn't remember the last time he'd actually smiled, but he managed one - if small - for her.
"A Great Knight saved me... I know that you would have been upset with me if I hadn't listened. Maybe your spirit sent him to me."
Gazing one final time at the two metal rings in his palm, he carefully placed them into the hole he'd dug a few inches into the dirt. Her ring was laid within his, and he covered them both with earth and gently patted it flat.
"At least this way, here, we can in a sense be buried together.
I'm sorry that I couldn't save you..." Yuki almost lost his voice, then, and had to pause to swallow against the lump in his throat.
"I plan on saving as many others as I can, before I return to your side."

There was no confusion of identity left. No doubt of what or who he had been. No doubt of what and who he was.
Yuki strode to the blue door with confidence, not even giving the black door a parting glance.
