Janatheil blinked as he dangled, studying the other’s reactions from his new vantage point for a moment. When the boy’s laugh spilled out, however, something in Jana’s chest warmed with satisfaction, and he grinned back heartily. Even if he was being ‘laughed at’, he couldn’t begin to care, and as his company’s amusement softened again into speech, he stretched his wings to brace himself, gripped the branch, and swung down, landing in a crouch.

“Happy to entertain,” he said. “I’ll be here all week. And: Janatheil.” After a quick flick of them to dislodge any stray bits of dust, twigs, or leaves, he tucked his wings back in towards himself and spared Alionse a wry grin. “Nice to meet you, too. Are you lookin’ to find more? Or ready to pack it for the night and call it a show. My offer to see you home safe still stands, but I’m happy to trek a bit further into the woods…”

As he said it, Jana glanced to the boy, appraising him with a more thorough search before his brows pinched together in thought at an observation.

“Did you…not only come out here all your lonesome, but also without a weapon…? Where’s your blade? Or…” He gestured vaguely, “…whatever it is you prefer.” Another idea occurred to him. “Unless you’re a mage?”

Alionse gave him a sour look and straightened his back. "I do not need someone to take me home. I'm not a child." He looked up at the sky. It was dark and he should probably go home, but Janatheil's words just made his stubborn streak blossom. He wanted to give it at least one more try before heading back home. He was determined to capture an Olrawk no matter how long it took, but even he could admit he probably shouldn't stay out all night in the woods. Alionse chewed his bottom lips while he thought about it, until Janatheil's words interrupted his mussing.

"I have a weapon," Alionse said firmly. He then pulled out his father's dagger. He had been using it as a knife, but it was still a weapon. Of course he would have preferred a sword... He shook his head. "I'm not a mage I'm actually..." pretty horrible at magic. That's what he was going to say, but then decided that the other boy didn't really need to know that.

Instead he gathered up his supplies, or what little remained of it. It was still enough for one more try. It was decided. "I'm going to try again. If you're tried you can head back. I'll be all right. I've been in these woods plenty of times," he said proudly.

Janatheil sighed, mildly disappointed at how quickly the boy’s mirth disappeared at his offer. He wasn’t trying to make him feel like a child, but the level of defensiveness Alionse seemed to display towards the subject made Janatheil wonder, privately, if he didn’t either a.) still feel like one himself or b.) was trying to prove something. Perhaps his parents still treated him too often younger than his age and he had excess frustrations to spew on the subject.

Regardless, however…

Janatheil shrugged, opening his mouth to say that his offer had been entirely friendly when his eyes landed on the boy’s ‘weapon.’ He stared, briefly. After an extended, serious pause wherein he tried to decide if the other was actually serious, he laughed.

“That? You cut churned butter with that. Maybe a sheron steak,” Jana said, but as the seriousness of it sank in, he shook his head. “You can’t defend yourself with that. Not seriously. It’d go against my honor if I left a boy your size alone in a dark forest with a bread knife. Where are we headed, oh captain? Since you’re so familiar, you can lead.”

Alionse frowned at Janatheil then looked back at his dagger. Sure, it wasn't a sword, but it was still a weapon. "You can defend yourself with a dagger. That's what they are for." He creased his brow as he looked critically at the blade before shaking his head. Maybe nobles didn't know how to use daggers. He shrugged and sheathed his but was distracted back to the older boys rambling.

He did ramble a lot and tended to insult and be showy in the process. It made him wonder if he had many friends. Then again, Alionse didn't have friends himself, so he wasn't one to judge. That thought, for the first time, bothered him, so he pushed it back to focus.

"You don't have to make excuses. If you want to go Olrawk hunting too, just say so," Alionse said as he started walking. Maybe it was a pride thing for the noble. He didn't seem like the sort that was too honest with himself. It was a good thing Alionse liked being more straightforward. Feeling like he had figured the boy out a little, Alionse moved deeper into the woods.

It didn't take him long to find more Olrawk, deeper in the woods with darkness growing, the Olrawks were coming out. Pleased and confident that this time he would be able to capture one, Alionse crouched down and began setting up his trap of seeds and fish. Since the net had a hole in it on one side, Alionse decided to put a knot in it. It shortened up the net, but that was fine. Alionse decided this time he would set the net under and when the Olrawk landed to get the food it would land actually in the net, so all Alionse would need to do was yank the net up.

It's a good plan. Satisfied, a small smile curled Alionse's lip as he began setting up.

Janatheil chuckled. “Yes, well, I suppose it is one possible use of a dagger…but those that use them genuinely in self defense tend to be highly practiced and have multiple back ups. Some to throw, some for slitting throats, some for stabbing backs, and sturdier ones for dealing with going up against foe with blades of their own. Animals, on the other hand, tend to be better dealt with in as rapid a manner as possible, preferably with at least a little distance between you and it. More than the span of a hand, in any case, which is all you’ll get with a blade that size.”

He followed easily after the boy as he talked, disregarding whatever tensions still lingered in the kid — Alionse’s — gait and attitude.

“And,” he added for the record, “I don’t need to make excuses. I said what I meant, though as before, I was out here already, so ‘olrawk hunting’ is as good of a pastime as any now that I’m out here…doesn’t make it any less true that I wouldn’t want you to be hurt.”

When they seemed to be drawing up on Alionse’s next plotted ‘source’ location, Janatheil quieted in the name of being cooperative — for once — and moved silently back, out of the way, to lean against a nearby trunk and watch as the younger boy worked. It was amusing in some respects, to imagine trying to catch a bird in such a net, but then, Janatheil couldn’t fairly claim he know the ‘proper’ way to go about taming olrawks. So, he kept the thought to himself, privately turning the thought over in his mind and wondering what might actually be most effective.

Surely there was some expert who knew. A good number of hunters trained the beasts as everything from lookouts, to messengers, to prey finders. For now, however, he seemed destined to wait.

"And you've decided I'm not skilled enough to fight with a dagger. " He huffed. He shook his head as again the Janathiel continued talking. He sighed. "Look, you don't know me and I didn't ask or need a guardian. I have been out here along before and managed to survive without you being here, so I'm capable of taking care of myself. So in that end you don't need to concern yourself."

He rolled his shoulders and finished up his trap, noticing the noble had leaned back on a tree, watching him. He tried not to let that distract him. Satisfied he had made the trap as good as he could managed, he knotted some of the rope to one side and moved back until he was at Janatheil's side.

There he sat and waited. He didn't have to wait long as one Olrawk swooped down on the net. Alionse's expression grew intent as he focused, ready to yank the rope and spring his trap, but before he could do it the Olrawk's head jerked up. Then suddenly it sprung into flight. Around them several other Olrawks had also took flight.

Alionse looked up at the sky, watching them as they flew away. "I think something spooked them."
