okay I know this is a programming guild, but im hoping I can get some help with a hardware problem im facing right now... (i will copy the message i made to another guild im in. (im just hoping for some good ideas that may be the problem of my computer... I need to fix it fast...))
___________________________________________________________

ok...I hvae a problem with my comp.
when I turn it on for it to boot all I get is a long beep. (last about 4-6 seconds)

and no signal is being sent to the monitor.
I checked the power supply. the -5 volt was bad. so I changed it out and still same problem(both 300 watt). I cleaned the entire system out. didnt leave any dust or anything... cleaned the fans and everything...
I checked the ram and even got my friends stick of ram to see if it was my ram(ddr 3200 512mb stick.) that went bad or something but nothing... I even reset my bios and took out the little battery on the motherboard for about 20 minutes...
still nothing...
same problem... soemone told me that it may be that my system is to hot but i dont beleive that would be it... he said they maybe my fan wasnt going fast enough... I recall that I checked out my speeds everything about 2 weeks before just for fun and seen that it was running at a little more than 1000 RPM's ...somewhere between 1000-1150...
I thought about my harddrive... maybe something wrong with it since im not getting anything... even though I would think a screen would load and tell me harddrive failure or something when it starts to boot... but im not ruling that out. I was not able to check to see if this was true ot not... I have not tested this yet with another harddrive...

also... I seen a peice a ram the day it was messed up on my table next to the tower and found out that my sis got a 1gb stick of ram from a friend. it was a munckin or something to that name... and I beleive that she may have tried to put it in the sysem since I showed her how to put it in just for the hek of it...
I think she may hvae tried to put it in herself. and the bad thing about that is that ram doesnt fit into my computer,,, its a 168 pin dimm with 1 dip in it but it is not the right kind... im afraid she may have tried to jam the stick of ram in and it may have did something to the motherboard...
I was wondering if that could be it(I hope it isnt that though.)

This is about all the information I have on this problem...
I just wanted to know if you guys had any ideas about this...
any ideas on what it may be...

(also... obviouly from reading this u know my pc is broken., So i will not be able to check this daily to reply to any comment you have but I will reply to this but it may be a little while before I can get back here to see your replies to this matter...)
also thanks for your time and i hope you guys(and girls), have some good ideas thats I could try to see if it fixes my computer...
I will be on here till about 9:30am central time... which is about in 45 min...

and I may be able to check this tomorrow morning...
thanks for your time... and srry it is so long but I thought the more info. u had the better chance u guys have at guessing what is wrong with my system...
(hope theirs someone good that knows alot about hardware here...)
oh and dont be afraid to get a little technicle. i know a bit about computers... im getting certified for a+ right now...

I'm not really into hardware, it can be fustrating sometime -_-;

but anyway, You could look at your mother board manuel, it should tell you what the long beep means. There are diferent beep sequence so be sure it's there right one... Usually the beep are related to memory problem, video cart not found or CPU overheat. But that differ from a motherboard to another.
Since you have already tested the memory and that you belive your CPU fan is correct, I would test your video cart on another system...

Good luck!

thanks but its an on-board vid card and i even tried to use a vid card (that I know works.) and still nothing... but as for your suggestions I thank you... these are all things I thought they were but hoped I was wrong. I will be bringing my comp back to school tomorrow to have some friends with me to help fix my comp... hopefully we will be able to fix it properly... what im afraid of if its either the harddrive, motherboard, or cpu... either one of those and im screwed and will hvae to fork up a couple hundred bucks. and its been a month since I backed up my harddrive so if its the harddrive I will be loosing some valuable info... luckily most of what is saved is also saved at a friends house... pretty much everything but my documents...

thanks again for your suggestions...

thanks ^^

i doubt it is your harddrive... your bios should boot event if you dont have any harddrive plugged.

before buying anything i would try to test all peices in a direfent system, it might be your motherboard that is broken.

My best guess is that either your motherboard or your CPU is broken or not well install/setup.

give us news when you know ^^

*SNAP*....... I had the exact same problem once..... but I can't remember what our tech guy said.....

Video Card?... I dunno... that might have been the problem in that case... but I can remember a bit of what the problem was...

crying ... I broke the computer in that way once... If I remember correctly... that was the time It cost me $40 of my birthday money to get our tech guy to fix it...
CRAP.....

Wow,
Have you tried a new monitor? Sometimes after the cable in the moniter is moved alot it can wear or break down and short. Also what windows were you running...another place to check out would be http://www.microsoft.com/support. My neighbor had something like that happen and he had a virus that had changed all of the bios and mounted it self in the boot records and then he had to go into dos mode to fix it but...his monitor worked. Other than that I have no clue...I can ask around

This sounds vaguely familiar to a problem a friend of mine had with his machine some time ago...

He had the exact same problem as far as his monitor not getting a signal. We tried swapping out video cards, switching monitors, and so on. It turns out that with all the crap he was trying to run off his power source (case lighting, three hard drives, two DVD drives, etc.), the video card just wasn't getting enough power to send a signal to the monitor.

I don't know exactly what's in your case, but you could try unplugging some hardware that isn't vital to see if that's the problem. If it starts to work again, you should look into upgrading your power source or cutting back on what's already plugged in.

By the by, this would be a very good time to clean and organize the inside of your case. I did it when my graphics chipset fan started acting up, and it made it much easier to keep track of what is doing what. 3nodding
