Tor'Baalos stepped through the snow, leaving deep footprints in his wake. Mephistopheles was nearby, he could sense him. He had a lot of explaining to do, too. Why had the other member of the Bloodskull Legion returned to their world for minutes before leaving again?

In the distance, the dusclops saw a building. Focusing on it, he sensed Mephistopheles within. He took off at a run.

In the library, Lenore and Mephistopheles sat alone, talking to each other, when suddenly the dusknoir looked up.

Tilting her head, Lenore placed a hand on his. "What's wrong, Mef?"

The dusknoir floated upwards before looking down to the small girl. "It may just be my imagination. I don't know why he'd be here now. But-" As if to answer his question, Tor'Baalos phased through the wall of the library. "Baal."

Tor'Baalos looked around the library, noting the strange pokemon and the girl, but not seeing the duskull he was searching for. But upon closer examination, he found that the strange pokemon was Mephistopheles. "Mephisto." Tor'Baalos took in the other's form, curious - it wasn't like his own, so the other wasn't a dusclops. Could he have become something greater than even that? No, that was ridiculous. Mephistopheles, while his friend, was always a weakling. Tor'Baalos was the one destined for greatness. Mephistopheles' voice shook him out of his thoughts.

"What are you doing here, Baal?"

Tor'Baalos seemed to grin. "Now, now, Mephisto. Is that anyway to treat your closest friend? And what happened to your polite way of speaking? Did you finally shed that worthless trait?"

As Lenore looked on, confused, Mephistopheles continued to stare at his old friend. "My apologies, Baal. I didn't expect to see you again, let alone here."

The dusclops looked from Mephistopheles to Lenore and back again. "I came to find out why my old friend hasn't returned to us - it's been over a year, even a weakling like you should have been able to kill his pactmate by now." He paused. "Unless you already have. Naughty, naughty, Mephisto - how many pacts have you made? Five? Ten? Maybe even twenty?"

The dusknoir answered guardedly. "Lenore is the only one I've made a pact with, Baal."

"Oh, how cute. You even refer to the refuse as if it were worthy of having a name. What an odd game you play, Mephisto. So? When are you going to kill her?"

Lenore looked on as the two pokemon exchanged their silent communication, oblivious to what was going on.

"I'm not. The pact requires that I stay with her." He lied. The pact was abolished now, even if he didn't remember how or why.

Tor'Baalos looked at the girl closer, and she shirked back a little at his approach. "Well, then. Guess I'll have to do you a favor and kill her myself." His fist lit up with flames, and he reared back to fire a gout of flame at Lenore, but Mephistopheles floated between them, glaring at Tor'Baalos.

"Move."

"I won't do that, Baal."

"It's just a wretched little human girl, no one will mourn her passing. Now, move, Mephisto."

Mephistopheles shook his head. "I would mourn her. I lost her once, and I will not do so again."

Lenore looked on with a mixed feeling of fear and unease. What was going on?

Tor'baalos' eye narrowed at Mephistopheles' words. "'You' would mourn her? Mephisto, I knew you were a weakling, but to turn your back on our most sacred tradition? Even you should be above that. You know it goes against everything we stand for to grow attached to the refuse -"

"She is not refuse! Lenore is a person, Baal. Moreover, she is my friend - you would do well not to speak ill of her in my presence."

The dusclops blinked, once, then glared as he extinguished the flames. "'Your friend'? Mephisto, you shame yourself, and even worse than that, me. We were friends, Mephistopheles - that is friendship, not this passing interest you have with the wretched human girl. And if you dare to compare us in such a way again, I'll have to remind you of your place."

Lenore looked up at her best friend, worried. "Mef, what's going on...?" Even she was able to sense the hostility emanating from the dusclops.

The dusknoir looked down at the girl. "Lenore, get behind me" He turned his attention back to Tor'baalos. "Baal, is there no way to convince you to leave peacefully? I don't want to fight you."

The duclops continued to glare daggers at his old friend. "Of course you don't, Mephistopheles. You never could best me in a fight, and even besides that, you always were a coward. Too scared to battle in a atash'atam, and now too scared to come back home. But this can be solved peacefully, Mephisto. All you have to do is let me kill the girl, and you can come home."

Mephistopheles sighed. "Then I'm afraid this cannot be solved peacefully. I'm not going back to the Legion, Baal, and you shouldn't have come here." He closed his eye. "I'm sorry."

With a flick of his hand, a tendril of shadow appeared behind Baal at Mephistopheles' bidding, and impaled the dusclops.
