There was apparently a lot to talk about. Chel knew that Jack and Chris had animosity, but she had always sidestepped the issue out of a willingness to pretend it didn't exist.
But now Chris had said a few things he couldn't take. A few things that worried Chel; when Chris did things that worried Chel it tended to mean one of them had ******** up big time.
Either way it wasn't a conversation she wanted to have over text, arguably the worst form of communication for her, so there she was down at the field.

Wary of conversations where s**t was already heavy, Chris took a couple minutes longer to get down to the field in order to cover up the dark circles under his eyes with foundation he'd stolen from Chel's room weeks ago. His bottle of sleeping pills were getting low, and soon he'd have to deal with the fact that he wasn't taking them but Dawson or Chel would expect him to get checked out or get more. He sighed and threw the bottle into his sock drawer and shut it hard. Goddammit.
When he finally made it to the field his hands were stuffed deep in his pockets and his shoulders were hunched up slightly. The picturesque image of someone who knew they'd said too much. "How's your head?" he asked quietly, holding up a small bottle of pain killers like a white flag. They'd spent a long time texting back and forth - that was a lot of strain.

"I'm dyin'" Chel responded, "Lifers said the only cure was your b***h squad hat." Chel had been gunning for it for a while now. It was going to be stolen soon anyways.
She waved a bag she was sitting on the ground next to her. "C'mon. We're gonna go make a fire on the beach." Outside their cave, naturally. She threw an arm around his hunched shoulders and was already herding him that direction.

"Looks like I'm gonna have to pull the plug," he deadpanned. "The price for your life is too high." The banter relaxed him marginally, but he still had an ill feeling in the put of his gut. It was harder to figure out how to talk when they weren't beating each other up first. It made it seem weightier, almost.
He let himself be herded toward the cave and helped gather dry enough wood just beyond the sand. "Did you bring marshmallows?" He asked, puppy-ish in his hope.

"Be hard to make a s'more without 'em don't you think?" While Chris was gathering the wood, she'd laid out a towel (their very fancy picnic blanket) that she barely fit onto. She also got two pointier sticks and lit the fire once he'd assembled it.
The work kept the conversation delayed; they could babble about Abbi's hair today and that funny thing Lydia said last week without actually broaching into serious conversation.
When all was settled, Chel offered him his stick and ripped open the bag. "I'll go first." There'd been some maturity in Chel since she almost always made Chris go first. "What the ******** your problem with Jack?"

Chris settled next to her (half on, half off the blanket - he'd have sand in his pockets for days) and twirled his stick nervously in his fingers.
At her question, he flinched. He was quiet for a minute, clearly mulling over what he wanted to say, before settling on a simple "He strapped a bomb to your wrist."

"I did that," she retorted, voice stony. "I made a deal with Merlin. I ******** up."

"I've ******** up plenty of times. Never been worried about Deus blowing me up," he replied, not looking at her. "He made the choice to put a target on your back, and didn't give a s**t about it."

It was hard for her to say the following, and it maybe showed her resolve in doing so. "Jack watched me get possessed. There was a monster named Grixlie in my body. Merlin put her there. Jack took me to the infirmary to get it out."
More quietly, "Whether he gave a s**t or not, he made the right call as a hunter. He'd do the same thing now. S'a ... I dunno a skill he has- keepin' a level head and s**t. S'somethin' we suck d**k at." Her marshmallow caught on fire and she pulled it out to blow the flames out. Chel knew that Chris was avoiding the point, but she was letting him get to it himself rather than forcing it out.

"I don't value a level head," he said firmly. "I value what's going to keep you alive. And by getting the higher ups involved he put your life directly on the line."
His face was stormy, clearly just as fired up about it now as he had been so long ago. He'd mostly put two and two together. He knew she was possessed in some way by Merlin. Didn't know it was some dickhat named Grixlie or what she had meant to accomplish, but he didn't really need to know.
"I don't trust someone who's going to make you a bomb and then act like it's a game to my face. I won't forgive him."

"This isn't just about the bomb," she snapped back, grabbing crackers from the box. "What aren't you tellin' me?"

"That I kicked his a**, Chel," he spat. "After I tried to get to you in that ******** cage and they wouldn't let me in, I found him and I beat him until he couldn't stand anymore." He get his teeth, and let the marshmellow on the end of his stick catch fire and wither away into ash.
"And then I left him there, because he was amused by it. He smiled and smirked and didn't give a goddamn that you could be podded or killed on the spot."

That was certainly something.
It took Chel a while to come up with an answer, and the spiteful part of her hoped that the silence was agonizing for him.
"I didn't know that," was what she settled on.

It wasn't agonizing so much as it was suffocating. He was treading a tightrope in the wind that could once again ******** up their friendship. "Because I try my damnedest to stay out of whatever the ******** you have with him. But <********> if that's not hard when I feel like he's going to be the reason I end up without my family."

"I know this is gonna sound like ********' clingy girlfriend talk-" It was, there was no avoiding it- "But he's saved my life a hell of a lot more times than he's put it in danger."
Moving her out of the way of a dragon, giving her an upper hand against Chiyoo, bandaging her countless times, saving him over the side of a cliff. But none of them amounted to the number of times Chris had done just as much for her. She couldn't say it out loud because it was lame, but both boys were incredibly important to her.
She stuffed the s'more in her mouth and it didn't leave a lot of room to talk, but she shoved herself against his side. "Why you gotta make it sound like I can't get outta any danger her puts me in? The ******** you take me for?" Some silence from chomping. "I save him a ton too y'know."
