"Today has been a trying day," the mare said, letting her gaze briefly on some of those among the group. Indeed, she looked a little tired, herself. "But you have been brave and resourceful. Of that, you should be very proud."
"Of that," the stallion at her side snorted, "and of the fact that some of you had the sense to want to stand and fight. You're the survivors," he insisted, meeting the gazes of some who had chosen to follow his lead. If we were still being attacked, we would be the ones who saved the rest. We'd be heroes. Be proud of that!"
The mare shifted her weight, a trace of irritation slipping through her pleasant demeanor before she tucked it away again. "We would all survive," she countered, "because no matter the choices we made in our approachs, we would still be standing together." She ignored the stallion's snort of derision. "With luck, we will not see another such invasion soon but there may come a day--"
"Will," he interrupted. "There will come a day."
"May," the mare insisted, spearing the stallion with a look as she continued. "There may come a day when we are called back to defend these lands. We are pleased to know that we will have all of you at our sides."
"Indeed," came another voice, a new voice, from the back of the gathering. There was a sort of music in it, somehow soothing as well as sounding certain. Heads swiveled and the gathered unicorns parted as a lone figure passed through them. As he passed, his steps almost delicate, his body sleek and his coat of a pattern that explained how he had appeared without more notice, the gathered began to whisper amongst themselves again.
He joined the two faction leaders, giving them each a gracious nod before turning to survey the waiting group. "Indeed, you will be called on again, one day, and indeed, you have performed well in defense of these lands, one another, and a most sacred place. We," he went on, and there was a rustling in the trees around the clearing, "are pleased to know this. For this reason, we have chosen to join you, to aid, to offer whatever aid we can."
A glint of amusement touched his eyes and he ducked his head again like he might be hiding a smile before explaining, "We are your kin and always have been, though we left this world long ago. Now it is time to come back to you. We look forward to sharing new lives together. We hope you will do the same."
