Chel spoke with her cousin in hushed whispers far away from the group, from people who did not matter.
"We won't die," she said shortly, but there was anger in her voice. A hostility crept into her tone that was unlike her usual lazy nihilism. "But we also won't figure out why the ******** we're here."

Chris looked more relaxed that Chel, but gave away his tenseness in the grip on the hilt of his sword. He was incredibly uneasy with it all, as well. Especially watching some of the people he'd fought so closely with be chosen. "I'm not sure dying would tell us anything either, to be honest. I'm not sure what else we could do."

"I wasn't gonna die anyways. I was gonna run with the power and get us the ******** out of here. Probably why they noticed." She shook her head somewhat mirthfully.
She looked at Chris somewhat tiredly. "I want answers and we still don't got none."

Jack appeared gaunt but quietly resolute as he left the lake, newly blessed and not feeling particularly better for it. Spying the cousins, he stopped a polite distance away and waited to catch one or both of their eyes.
He almost called out a joke to greet them instead, as strange as the impulse was. Something about catching them in the act of planning to desert. But even from afar he could tell the conversation was tense, and so he waited to gauge their reactions first.

Chel was the one to catch Jack's eyes and the moment she did they narrowed. Not that Jack would see, because they were hidden behind a shadowy veil.
But no more than a few seconds later, Chel grabbed Chris' side, bent her knees and then sprung from the ground, taking her cousin with her. "There's a p***k I don't want to deal with down there," she murmured to her cousin, flying him over some of the lakeside trees. "Hang on."

He considered leaving her alone for a moment--quite a few people she knew were going to be sacrificing themselves in the coming battle, and that wasn't easy news to take.
And then he remembered that for sure he wouldn't be making it, which meant he damn well was owed at least a conversation before things went to s**t.
Activating his cloak with a glower, Jack took to the air and gave chase.

Chris was probably going to throw up if Chel didn't give more warning with the wings. What the ********. He turned back to see Jack following them and his confusion was multiplied by tenfold.
"Why's he a p***k? He's a good knight." Chris had lost count of the number of times they'd fought together. He very much approved. "And he was chosen. He could be an asset."

"It's complicated," which Chris would know as her short answer for shut the ******** up.
She slammed Chris onto her back and ducked back under the trees, racing so low to the ground that she ripped some of the grass up along her wings. She bobbed in between trees, over boulders, took sharp turns; anything she could to shake Jack.
But eventually even she had to rest. When she was certain she couldn't carry Chris any longer she skidded to a stop next to a small stream, feet digging into the sand on the bank.
"Off," she gruffly told Chris, pulling her hood up. There was no escape at this point. If Jack hadn't gotten lost in the forest behind, he'd be on them in a moment.

Without a burden to weigh him down, it wasn't a monumental task to keep up with Chel. Several times he thought he had lost her in the trees, but by the time she had to drop Chris off, Jack had caught back up as predicted. Brow furrowed, he landed and walked towards them without breaking stride.
"Deserting at this point isn't very classy of either of you," he drawled.

Chris gagged for a moment as he rolled off Chel's back and to his knees in the sand. He was not meant for flight he had never been meant for flight this was the worst.
That didn't mean he wasn't still full of snappy comebacks. "We're not very classy people. Chasin' a girl that don't wanna be chased though? There's no word for how shitty that is."

Chel was grateful that even though Chris didn't know the circumstances, he was already on her side.
There was a distinctly different flavor of disgust on Chel's face, but she didn't know why she felt so strongly. Had she been in a jocular mood she might have blamed it on womanly mood swings, but she was not in that mood. She'd flown quite a ways and didn't want the strife.
Despite the fact that she didn't intend to desert, Chel found herself saying, "They give you a fancy title and you already orderin' us around."

His face was set, his eyes moving between them. Each their own flavor of stubborn. "You're not my responsibility, yes, but I deserve an explanation as to why you thought flying away was the most appropriate response towards someone who doesn't have much time left," Jack said bluntly. "Not just me either, but the others who were chosen. Are you going to avoid them too?"

Chris gave a low whistle, finally standing and brushing the sand from his armor. "Sounds like you think you're entitled to someone's time because you decided to give up your life. Also kind of sounds like you think you're entitled to an explanation to a very clear no. That's ******** up, Your Greatness."
Chris was always inclined to believe Chel's bad gut feelings. Even if he didn't, the look on her face would make him take up the defensive anyways.

Deserve.
One of the words Chel hated most.
"You deserve nothing," she hissed back at him. She even spat on the ground towards him. "It's none of your business. Go die your hero's death."

For a moment it looked as though Jack would actually pick a fight with the pair, but the spark remained contained to just his eyes. The spit in particular made his fingers twitch. But he shared the same restraint his canon counterpart had and merely sighed through his nose. Anger was only to be expected.
"May I say something before I leave you two alone, then?" he asked.
