Dovev shivered, trying to prod extra heat out of the fire in their small shelter. It was enough to cook on, and not a small fire by any means, but Dovev was used to the desert cities of Oba, and it was horribly cold here. And if Sauti was this chill, what of Zena? It would be far colder yet. Dovev was not looking forward to it.

But that was where he was contracted to go, that was where his employment took him and so, even as his employer complained, Dovev would keep his misery silent. Unspoken.

Speaking of which, where was Wermyn? He was off stealing again, likely. Dovev did wish that he would stop taking useless items – they didn't need the extra baggage or animosity.

Not wanting to venture out into the cold night to find Wermyn, Dovev fervently hoped that he would be back. Soon...

In the hours since having his letter returned to him, Tes took a liking to Thalyane. She was as no-nonsense as they came; a little brittle, rough around the edges, utterly humorless, very critical. But she was witty, in the way that a wild Tendajian could be. She was compassionate, and- if her thorny exterior was broken- a softie. Despite their shaky start, when the sky started to turn the luminous shades of purples and oranges of a dying sun, Thal outfitted him with a dark swatch of cloth to use as a scarf, and sent him on his way.

That was just as well. Teslaron wanted to keep this journey moving, and with the nights turning as long and crisp as they were, he really didn't have a great plethora of time to spend by the woman's side. So he made his way back to camp, bunching his fingers in the loose fabric around his neck to keep them warm. By the gods... They'd need to spend a little something on warmer garments as soon as they crossed the border... It was an idea even one as frugal as Dovev could get behind, Tes was sure.

When the light and crackles of a fire appeared in the edges of his vision, Tes powered forward. "Dovev!" He chirped when he spotted the other male. Teslaron moved to stand before him, taking up a seat in front of the other Water lad and putting his back to the fire, feeling an instant heat chase away the chill. "You won't believe what happened today," he started, tucking icy fingers between his thighs for added heat. "This woman was so brazen. She stole my letter, you know the one, and tried to humiliate me for it's return, and- I admit it worked a little, but- my name was inside there. Inside the letter."

He stalled, took a breath, closed his eyes. When he opened them, he scrutinized Dovev, lips quirking up slightly. "Were you starting to wonder where I'd gone?"

Dovev perked up, alert, at the sound of his employer's voice. Oh, thank the gods, he didn't have to leave the fire to find him. Also, he was all right. That was good. That meant that payment was still forthcoming.

He listened to Tes's story, not quite understanding. He knew the letter, yes – the boy had been carrying it around everywhere ever since the Tale. But name? His name was Wermyn. What was so special about finding a name? But Dovev did not ask, of course.

He turned back to the fire, adding new fuel to it and prodding it into merry and blazing heat. ”This one was... concerned.” he said, his voice clipped and neutral, as it always was. ”Yes.” he amended. Yes. He had been worried.

Teslaron's lips parted just barely in silent surprise at the admission, creating a plume of foggy mist that appeared each time he took a breath. 'Yes?' He ran the word over in his head, skeptical at first because he didn't think... Well, in the weeks spent traveling, Dovev had hardly uttered anything that constituted as any type of actual 'feeling.' Alert, clipped, patient; these things were what constituted as Dovev's 'feelings.' Not happy, sad, or angry. Never worried. So even the concession, however muted and second-though it was, did have a way of pushing him off guard.

When Tes realized his mouth hung open, he licked his lips, closing them and glancing back to his companion. "Thank you," he uttered - the first thing to come to his mind. For thinking about him? For being worried about him, when he really... didn't have a great many people who were or ever would be? 'Laric,' he reminded himself crisply. Laric worried. And cared. Tes raked a hand back through his dark, shoulder-length locks, tousling them to the side briefly before they fell back into place.

He sighed as he stood from his initial place, and instead took up a seat at Dovev's side. "I am sorry. For making you worry. But it was important, I'm afraid."

If Dovev was pleased at the surprise he evoked in his employer, he did not show it. He nodded, accepting the boy's thanks with his usual neutrality, and watched Teslaron for a moment longer. There was an odd gleam in his eyes, as if he wanted to express something more, add some additional comment, before he turned back to the fire. He retrieved some items of food – the last of their Talean tubers - from it's blaze. Charred, to be sure, but edible once he cooled them on a nearby clothen mat. He, wordlessly, took out two – one for himself and one for Teslaron, moving to give Teslaron space beside him.

”This one is sure it was important.” said Dovev. He actually did want to ask what was in the letter – Dovev had a healthy curiousity for his age – but he also knew that certain questions opened doors that should stay closed, and he had been punished many times for asking too many. Instead, he asked a more focused and relevant question:

”Was there anything in this letter that effects this expedition?”

Tes cast a skeptical glance down toward the 'meal' Dovev had graciously prepared for them. A complaint immediately rose to his lips at the sight of the smoking, charred remains of whatever it had once been. A glance to the other Water male proved that what he feared was likely true: his companion found the food 'edible enough.' It wasn't. Teslaron frowned and rubbed circles at the corners of his eyes. "You really should let me prepare the meals," he admonished in a grumble. The forest and plains were hardly conducive to preparing the quality of food he was accustomed to making. Regardless, he could still do better than that. He'd always been able to do better than that. Besides, it only seemed fair that if Dovev was going to work, Tes should cook. It just made sense.

The chances that he had it in him to stomach the blackened plant-matter were slim. So he flapped his hand to clear off a lingering spit of smoke and went back to the matter at hand. Did anything Laric wrote actually affect the expedition? Did Thalyane's assertions that he 'knew nothing about romance' (or love or men or something like that) change what he'd set out to do?

Tes reached for a canteen nestled in a pack that sat perched against one of the logs serving as a bench. He should return home. It nagged at him as it did every time he felt lonely or overwhelmed or his thoughts lingered too long on what he'd left behind. He gave the container a swish. But then everything up to this point would have been a waste of time. And he'd have literally nothing to give to Laric or Dovev for the trouble he caused. Teslaron popped open the lid. "No," he decided at last. "Nothing at all."
