Quote:
"It's been awhile. Can we meet up?"

She'd received the text from Cybele only two days before. She'd hesitated upon reading it, unsure what Cybele meant by wanting to meet up now, but Ganymede wasn't the type to turn someone down over a little confusion and unease. She allowed people to scan her into their phones knowing that they might contact her, and she had every intention of responding in kind.

So she sent a text back with a location near her old home turf, a rundown little park next to a church, with a rusting metal slide and a battered swing-set that had seen better days. It was a comfortable place for Ganymede—childish in a way, but one she hoped would be comfortable enough for Cybele as well.

Ganymede took a seat on one of the swings and rocked slowly back and forth as she waited, listening to the swing set creak and groan as she filed through her memories for previous encounters with the Senshi she was about to meet. And she wondered, what had happened for Cybele to text her out of the blue?

"Ganymede?"

Cybele appeared from behind a line of trees holding a set of Google Maps directions to the place they'd agreed to meet up. They hadn't really been necessary. Ganymede's bright, almost glowing aura had been easy enough to follow once she was in the general area. A quick look around showed why she hadn't heard of this place, although it being small and run down meant it was probably good for talking without being disturbed.

She saw the other girl and smiled, although it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Hello," she said, a little nervously. Their previous encounters, from the first one where they'd ended up almost screaming at each other to the most recent one on the moon where Cybele had messed up her gender in front of everyone, hadn't gone as well as they could have, but that was why she was here. She wanted to apologize, to reconnect... because despite their differences, Ganymede was the closest thing she had to a mentor, and that was something she needed right now.

She walked over to the slide and sat down, folding up the map to tuck it into her ribbons. "Thank you for agreeing to meet up. How are you?"

Ganymede smiled upon seeing Cybele emerge from the treeline. Though Ganymede could certainly be the type to hold grudges, Cybele wasn't one of those people she felt like holding anything against. She wasn't entirely sure why, except that Cybele had never done anything to deserve the antagonism. A little argument followed by an honest mistake was nothing for Ganymede to hold against her.

“Hi,” she greeted the other Senshi. “Glad you found the place. We could have met somewhere else if you wanted, but I figured this was out of the way enough that we should be safe.”

And in the off chance that they were going to have an uncomfortable conversation, Ganymede wanted to make sure she was somewhere comfortable—and this place, though run down and nearly falling apart, was comfortable to her.

“I'm doing fine,” she said. She didn't yet stop swinging back and forth. “Had a little trouble over New Year's, but that's done and over with now. I figure it's time to move on. What about you? How have you been? I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting a message out of the blue like that. Is something wrong?”

Cybele shook her head. "No. This place is fine. I don't really know a lot of places that are like this, for talking. Well, not for talking while powered up, at least. Usually, I stay in the big parks so I can hunt youma." They were usually better maintained, too, for when she did find someone to talk to, but she didn't really mind the rusty slide that much. At least she was in magical clothes that would clean themselves.

She nodded politely until Ganymede mentioned New Years. Her eyes narrowed in concern, and she stared in a way that was sort of awkwardly sad for a few moments, trying to think of a polite way to ask if she had been one of the captured ones. Of course, she realized just bringing it up would probably make it worse for both of them, so she shook her head and tried to smile again.

"I'm all right. A little directionless, but it's nothing compared to when we talked before. I don't know if you remember. That was so long ago, I know, back when I was more or less brand new and so confused I almost corrupted. It was back when I thought having a secret identity meant I didn't have to worry about what people thought of me, so when you told me to question what the Dark Mirror Court was saying, to not fall straight into Chaos's welcoming arms... I freaked out a little, and I wasn't nice about it, but I stopped and tried to figure things out for myself, and in the end I didn't corrupt, so I wanted to say thank you, and to apologize."

The most important part of her speech over with, the part she'd been whispering to herself on the way to the park, Cybele relaxed a bit. "And just to talk, if that's all right. I know I didn't used to be easy to get along with, so I'm trying to reconnect." She needed allies. She had come to the realization that there weren't people in the war who she knew well enough to trust, and she wanted to change that. Ganymede seemed like a good starting place. She had seen her around a bit.

Ganymede looked a little surprised when Cybele practically unloaded on her, but she didn't interrupt and made sure it was obvious that she was actively paying attention to every word that passed between Cybele's lips. Talk of possible corruption made her momentarily uncomfortable, especially if it would have been at all willing, but that Cybele had not gone through with it relieved her greatly.

“You don't need to thank me or apologize,” Ganymede said. She smiled to show she didn't hold any of their past encounters against her. “I think we're all a little directionless. I know I was for a long time. Probably still am a little bit. You were new. We all go through a bit of an uncomfortable time when we're new. I ran away from things and refused to face reality, and there were people who got hurt because of it.”

Four years later she looked back on it with some guilt, but with resignation as well. She'd been young and scared and confused. What more could anyone have expected of her? What more could she have expected of herself?

“Trust me, you are far more easy to get along with than some people,” Ganymede reassured her. “Myself, for example. I don't make it easy for people to get close to me, much less like me. But I've gotten better at it. I'm sure you have, too. If you haven't, you will. It comes with experience, I think.”

She continued to push the swing back and forth slowly and said, “So what did you want to talk about?”

Cybele nodded slowly and did her best to actually listen, biting back several more thank yous. The reassurances that there were no hard feeling were welcome, and she relaxed a little, but it didn't make her feel as much better as she'd though it would.

"I don't think you're that hard to get along with," she finally said. "I know if I say I like you, I'll sound like a desperate third grader, but of my powered conversations, the ones with you have definitely not been the worst. I can manage diplomacy sometimes, but this is a war, and that means sometimes you have emotional breakdowns on complete strangers, and that ends about the way you would expect it would, but... I'm even getting better about that." She shrugged and half smiled. She was consciously careful not to get to close to people, though. She had her civilian life to make friends with people who weren't constantly in danger of death or corruption, so she stayed detached from her allies. That caused its own problems, she was starting to realize, so here she was, trying to be a bit less than stiffly formal.

"I'm still... sort of confused, though. It's the opposite of before. At first, I didn't know what to believe, but I knew what to do: find answers. Then, I found answers, so I knew who to trust but I didn't really have a goal anymore. Well, for a little while, I was trying to be the perfect hero and fight evil and save everyone without much other purpose, but since my upgrade..." She stopped mid sentence and reached down towards the worn rubber chips beneath the slide, picking up a small handful and passing them from hand to hand. "Since I... killed someone right after my upgrade, actually, I don't feel like I've been doing anything very helpful at all. That's... what I'd like to talk about, I think, if that's all right? Just... what the most productive thing to do is, in you opinion."

Very slowly, she looked up.

Ganymede's mouth dropped open when Cybele admitted to having killed someone. She tried her best to control her reactions, forcing her mouth closed soon after and making an attempt to smooth out her expression, but she wasn't sure she managed to do a good job of it. She was an expressive person, and her horror over the situation was probably fairly obvious.

Of all the things she'd experienced in the war, death was not something she'd entirely come to terms with. She'd grown used to the idea that she might die, that her friends might fall beside her, though the thought horrified her still. She'd even come to terms with killing even if she hadn't ever done so herself. Such things couldn't be avoided in the war. If it came down to it, if it was a choice between a Negaverse officer or one of her friends, Ganymede knew which choice she would make. She could handle death by defense more than she could the thought of murder in cold blood.

She wanted to ask Cybele which her experience had been, but she decided for the moment that she didn't want to know the answer, wary that it might derail their conversation.

“To be honest, I'm not sure what to tell you,” she said.

“I've never had that experience before,” she admitted. She hoped it didn't make her seem weak or inexperienced or incompetent in Cybele's eyes. She knew there were others out there who weren't so squeamish about killing.

“I spend most of my time dusting youma or... sometimes talking to Negaverse officers,” she continued. “Or arguing, really. They're not the easiest people to talk to. When I fight, I fight to protect people. My friends. My family. Myself. And even though I've never killed anyone before, I can't say for certain that there won't ever be a situation in which I might. It's sort of unavoidable, I think. I've just been lucky that that isn't something I've had to face yet. As for productive things to do... I'm not sure how to answer that question. What feels productive to me, protecting my friends and family, might not feel as productive to someone else. We all have our own reasons for fighting, and that's something we have to discover for ourselves.”

Shock was not what she had been expecting. She'd been ready for disapproval, even disapproval so strong it destroyed whatever shreds of friendship or goodwill there were between them. Ganymede's expression was enough to make her turn her gaze away again the ground and get a bit defensive internally. It shouldn't have been that surprising. This was a either war, or something very similar, and although Cybele didn't like to consider herself a warrior, she had never been a pacifist. She was the Senshi of the Hunt, not love or kittens or daisy chains.

After a few moments, she looked up, folding her hands neatly in her lat. She wasn't here for reassurance that what she'd done was normal and fine. There were plenty of people she could have gone to for that, and she'd talked to a few, but for now she wanted a different perspective. "You don't have to tell me it's okay," she said. "I know it's not. I hate it, but there's nothing I can do about it at this point." Even now, it was hard to think about it without getting emotional, but this time she managed to hold eye contact and even go back to the small, polite smile.

"I didn't mean talk about killing, actually. Well, not just that, at least. I mean more just talking about productive things we can do, and not necessarily the solution or anything like that, just... ideas." The ideas she were interested in were actually the ones that didn't involve killing. That was an option she had used and would maybe use again, but she needed others.

"Protection is... my goal too, I think. I hate seeing people hurt or killed, and even though I'm not that ideal superhero, I want to do my best to stop it. Even if you're just trying to protect specific people, though, like your family, or anyone you care about... isn't the best way to do that to weaken the Negaverse? There's getting rid of youma, of course. I hunt them a lot, too, and I try to make sure there are never any in my neighborhood, but officers turn up sometimes, too, and..." she adjusted herself in a way that could possibly be interpreted as a shrug, "I've heard of purification, but even if it's realistic, I don't know if I'd be able to persuade anyone to do it."

Ganymede wanted to reassure Cybele—not to tell her it was okay (it wasn't; things like that never were), but to assure her that it didn't make her a terrible person. It was merely one facet of who Cybele really was.

Besides, this was war. It was high time Ganymede got used to the idea that people would die at the hands of her allies. It may not be a comforting thought, but at the end of the day it couldn't be avoided.

She chose not to comment on it further, however, lest she say or do something tot inadvertently turn Cybele away. They may not be close—perhaps they never would be—but Ganymede respected her. She didn't want to give Cybele any reason to think otherwise.

“Purification is an option,” she said. “But not always a feasible one. Officers are so brainwashed they don't even realize what they're doing, the energy draining and the killing, is wrong. They've been fed lies about us to keep them obedient. They hate us and they fear us. Convincing them otherwise isn't an easy task.”

Yet Ganymede maintained hope. For Cyllene's sake, for Wolframite and Bismuthite, she had to believe there was a way to save them.

“But there are some of them who question their own people,” Ganymede continued. “I've spoken with officers who don't approve of what the Negaverse did over New Years. To you and me, kidnapping and torture might seem par for the course as far as the Negaverse is concerned, but there are officers who don't agree with it. It's simply a matter of finding the ones with doubts and helping them to see through the corruption.”
