Samantha stared absently out the window of her apartment. The betrayal of Erika Hartmann still stung fresh in her mind, and the woman couldn't help but wonder where the former officer was. The bullet wound had healed itself, given time, and she was ready to get back into the fray. She closed her eyes, and when they opened, they were orbs of brown determination.
She knew exactly what mission she would request.

"No."
Sam was caught off guard by the commander's response. "'No'?"
The man took a drag on his cigarette, turned his head, and exhaled. "I said, no. You are the reason the spy got away."
Sam gritted her teeth. "With respect, sir, no one saw Officer Hartmann's betrayal coming. I believe, however, that I am best equipped to find her."
The man turned his eyes on her as he took another puff of his smoke. "And then what? You get shot again, and we lose another officer?"
Despite herself, Sam slammed her hands on the man's desk. "That was a sneak attack, and you know it!" Stop it, Sam. "I'm the only one who knew anything about Erika, so I should be the one searching for her!" Stop it, you're going to get written up. This isn't you. "And if you won't send me, then I'll file a notice to the chief about everything that's been going on under your command and how <******** up everything is!"
Silence fell over the office as Sam came to her senses. She breathed heavily from her outburst, locking eyes with the higher up. Finally -
"Very well, Officer Pierce." Sam was about to breath a sigh of relief when he continued. "You're suspended."
What?

Samantha blinked. Suspended? Her?
"Sir?"
"You're suspended. Su-spen-ded. Is it really so hard to understand? Now get out of my office."
Sam stared in slack-jawed silence for a moment more before turning and leaving the room. Closing the door behind her, she tried to wrap her head around it.
She was suspended?

Karina yawned as she pulled on her shirt. These last few missions she was on were killer. And there was certainly a lot of killing that needed to be done in them. It would have been easier if she had a partner, but she had explicitly requested that Walpurgis not be included in it. So, no partner this time. It was probably for the better - Walpurgis didn't need to dirty his hands anymore than he already had. She brushed a lock of temporarily-dyed-brown hair out of her eyes as she thought about how she'd lied to him about what she was doing. Walpurgis would have gone if she'd told him what the mission was - and that was exactly why she hadn't.
"s**t, man, ah can't tell if ah'm bein' a good wife 'r a terrible one." She chuckled at her words as if she had told a funny joke. It was still a new sensation to her, being married. It had happened months ago, and it was still foreign. Hell, they were even parents now. Thinking on that brought up thoughts of her own parents. Her father had been murdered by a cop saving Walpurgis, and her mother... She shook her head. It wasn't important.
She had a job to do.

Samantha walked through the station, dejected. A cleaning lady walked past her, their eyes to the ground, and Sam had the slightest feeling of deja vu. She remembered the cleaning lady's haircut from somewhere, but where? She turned to look at the woman, and noted three jagged scars peeking out from under the other's shirt. Her eyes widened.
"Erika?!"
The cleaning lady took off at a dead run toward the commander's office.

Karina, disguised as a cleaning lady, had infiltrated the station. Her goal: assassination. Stepping through the hall, she almost froze at the sight of Officer Samantha Pierce. Oh, so she was out of the hospital. Either way, the mission parameters hadn't changed. Ducking her head, she moved to walk past her former partner. Did so, even. But before she could congratulate herself, Sam caught on.
s**t.
She took off at a run towards the target, stashing a hand into her pocket to retrieve a bomb. Priming it, she swung open the door to the commander's office, threw it in the corner, and jumped through the window. Stumbling to her feet, she continued to run as the bomb went off.

Samantha made it to the door of the commander's office right as the bomb went off, flinging her back into the hall. Scrambling to her feet, she took in the sight of the room - or what was left of it. The commander was nowhere to be seen. "Arceus..."
Stepping over the wreckage of the room, she made chase for her former partner.

"s**t."
Karina swore under her breath as she ran - the mission, albeit successful, was now a disaster. This was the first time that she'd been recognized, but one time was enough. Looking over her shoulder, she saw Samantha closing in. Shiiiiit.
Reaching for a pokeball, she grabbed at empty air and swore. She'd left Blaire and the others behind, thinking she wouldn't need them. Stupid!
She sped up.

Samantha ran through the streets after the rocket. She was faster than her - given time, she'd catch up. But time was a luxury she didn't possess. There was no telling when the rocket would pull something, or what she'd pull, and that hurt. She thought she'd known Erika, but now she knew that she was fooled, like everyone else.
"Erika, stop!" It was a pointless gesture even to her own ears. Curious citizens watched the chase with confusion, unsure what to do. Should they get involved?

Karina swore again as she rounded a corner and nearly collided with an elderly woman. Regaining her bearings, she continued running as fast as she could, but she knew she wouldn't be able to keep it up forever, even without Sam closing in.
Thinking quickly, she began to run towards a shortcut out of town. Maybe she could lose Sam in the wilderness.

Sam saw Erika change directions, and came to the same conclusion that the former officer had. She couldn't take that chance. Pulling a pokeball from her belt, she sent out Fen'harel, and the zigzagoon kept pace with her. "Fen'harel, chase after her!" She pointed at Erika as she spoke, and the zigzagoon nodded before speeding up.

Karina looked over her shoulder to see a zigzagoon rapidly closing in. Well, s**t. She had forgotten that Sam actually had pokemon. This made things more difficult than they already were. Why did she have to leave Blaire behind. Stupid, so stupid. She tried running harder, but she was reaching her limit. She could hear the zigzagoon right behind her, and it lunged --
Only to clip the last bomb in her pocket, knocking the pin out of its socket. The bomb began to beep, slowly at first, but it gained in tempo like a song of death. Over the thumping of her own heart, Karina noticed the beeping only belatedly.

Sam saw Fen'harel lunge at Erika and just barely miss her. She heard the woman swear loudly a few short moments later, then throw something. A bomb. It exploded mid-flight, sending the rocket crashing into the wall to her left. Speeding up, the officer arrived at the scene of the explosion, where people were just beginning to gather around. Pushing her way to the front of the growing crowd, she flashed her badge and said in a commanding voice, "Motterosa Police, everyone back away, please." The crowd of people was slow to respond, but eventually fell back from the scene.
Fen'harel stepped up to her side with a soft 'gooon', having escaped from the worst of the explosion. Swallowing, Samantha stepped over to the prone form of her once-friend, blinking as she took in her battered and bloody form. "Erika..." She whispered, more to herself than the rocket who could doubtlessly not hear her. The rocket let out a ragged breath, and Sam realized she was still alive, at least for now. She had to get her to the hospital, and quickly. Pulling out her phone, she dialed for an ambulance.

Sam sat in Erika's hospital room, staring at the comatose body of her former friend. "It's ironic, isn't it, Erika? That you'd get the same room that I did. This is the last place I saw you before today, and now we're back. Although the roles are kind of different." Tears began to stream down her cheeks. "Wake up soon, Erika. You need to answer for what you've done, but even more than that, I need to talk with you. You were my friend, and I... I loved you, even. But was all of that pointless to you? I need to know, so it can stop hurting."
But Erika said nothing as the monitor continued to beep in the silence.
