Dyakida and Peyla wandered the forest, seeking materials as they often did. Dyakida knew that she should not go alone, but she needed to take a break from the others and her work. Something about her captivity amidst the Obans ate away at her, making her cringe when even a Sister strode behind her. It was no longer as bad as it had been, but after long stretches of stress and work, she needed to rest and recuperate. Not long, of course, just a single lone trek into the nearby jungle, with only her sprite for company. Just one trip, and she would be right as the torrential rains of Jahuar.

It was this extremist mess. After the incident in the marketplace, things had become... complicated... with some of her Sisters. Most understood her stance on the issue, and respected her neutrality. But there were a few, a toxic, unpleasant few, who considered her neutrality and willingness to serve their hybrid brothers and sisters a threat. Fortunately, even among their friends they were a minority, but even small problems were problems, and they were fool enough to cause those problems despite the general disapproval of their peers and elders.

She was, after all, a well-respected member of the tribe, not to be harassed. The punishments were far from harsh but were humiliating enough to stop all but the fools. There were always fools...

Always.

~~~
Dyakida shook her head as she touched a bauble-like seedpod that hung from a nearby tree, feeling it for its qualities. Peyla hovered nearby, chiming hopefully. “No.” Dyakida said, releasing it and listening as it clunked not-quite-hollowly against the tree, “I think I should leave that here. It won't be useful for much...”
Peyla chimed, dissappointed. The day's walk had become hours, and they hadn't found much of use...
They were getting bigger. The sight of the pups- hardly pups at all, anymore, but predators in their own right- nearly made the Shifter male giddy. While he was not accepted among them, the radaku tolerated his presence as they tolerated anything they saw on a daily basis. He was like a tree or an insect to them- a fixture they couldn't be rid of. They hunted, tumbled, and napped, and fed while Lerin looked on from the trees. If he moved too much, the scent him a warning glower, sometimes accompanied by a snarl.
On especially accepting days, Tandoori joined them. She was not fond of the radaku in the same way Lerin was, but keeping the beasts with her kept them away from him, and she was growing large enough that- even without flight- she could hold her own against them.
It was on a day where Lerin sat idly in the tangle of roots of a large tree, sketching absently in his notebook of the interesting scene taking place before him. Doori flapped her wings, tugging roughly on a root that two of the younger radaku had clasped in their jaws. She was not stronger than the pair of them, but when she dug her tiny claws in and clamped her beak down, she was force enough to be reckoned with. The radaku snarled. The kinfa crowed, and the sight was certainly amusing, if nothing else.
A chiming outside the clearing caught his attention, and Lerin turned to face it. The radaku youngsters stalled in their play, dropping the root and raising their heads toward the sound. Doori stilled, chirped, then hopped over to her two-legger, climbing up and perching on his leg before he had a chance to investigate. Her talons gripped at his knee, and she moved to pinch her beak against his arm. Playing with puppies was bad enough. He had no business inspecting foreign sounds. Especially not when some of the forest's more violent inhabitants had suddenly taken a strong disliking to certain two-leggers. And Doori could see plain as day the culprits weren't animals.
But Lerin patted her head and shooed her from his lap with a flick of his wrist. "It's better if we show ourselves now," he told her. "Not everyone will attack like extremists. And if we show them we mean no harm, it'll work out."
He rose to his feet, dusted his pants, and strode toward the treeline, with Tandoori bouncing behind him. She must've felt relief to see the familiar glow of a sprite, and the white-eyed stare of an Alkidike she actually knew. Tandoori chirped her greeting, ruffling her wings and tottering forward to press her head against Kida's legs.
Peyla screeched suddenly, fluttering excitedly around Dyakida's head. Dyakida flinched in the sudden wind of the wingbeats, reaching up to protect her feelers from the onslaught. ”Peyla, what is it?”
She heard a chirping and felt a warm, fluffy body press against her legs. The friendly greeting was the only thing keeping her from jumping back in startlement – was this some sort of beast, one she knew? ”Hello there.” she said, beginning to run through all the options as she set herself down and tentatively felt Tandoori.
Kinfa she thought, stroking along its feathers, her hand gliding along it's wings. That was about all she could tell from this, however.
Peyla of course, knew who it was and chittered and shrieked out a playful greeting. It was good to see the kinfa – which of course meant that her interesting haired Shifter was also nearby! Peyla squeaked in anticipation and began to seek out Lerin, chiming teasingly.
Doori hopped up into the Alkidike's touch, chirping delightedly as Kida's fingers found their way into her feathers. This, at least, was acceptable. Neither she nor Lerin knew a great deal about the tall, antennaed woman, but they'd at least met once before and had parted on very reasonable terms. Running into her was better than most options, in the kinfa's opinion. She tilted her head back, peering up to Dyakida's face and letting out a relentless stream of chatters.
"Tandoori..." Lerin's voice was soft and admonishing as he pressed forward through the rest of the brush to come upon the scene. He nearly knocked into the sprite as she hunted for him, despite her cheery chimes. But a quick, staggering step to the right brought her out of harm's way. The Shifter couldn't help but send the sprite a faint smile as he offered her his finger to greet. She seemed happy to see him, at any rate. "Pretty girl," he whispered in recognition, before delicately moving closer to where Dyakida and his kinfa interacted.
"It... seems a little early to be out an about, isn't it?" Lerin questioned softly, leaning down to touch the Alkidike's arm and offer her a hand up.
Peyla squealed her shimmering cry, her way of blushing at the complement. She thought he was pretty too, still with his wonderful flower and his gorgous hair. The sprite fluttered over to him and began to play with his hair, enjoying how soft and fine and fluffy it was, chiming happily all the while.
Tandoori? And that voice? Ah, that meant...
”Lerin?” Dyakida said, surprised. She felt for his hand and took it firmly, allowing herself to be helped to her feet. ”I wouldn't know.” she said, ”Late or not, it is good to hear your voice. How are you?” she asked, steadying herself, ”Doing well, I hope?” Lerin, at least, was an ally if not a friend, and she was fortunate that she was meeting him and not some other, angrier, Shifter.
”Has Tandoori grown? I swear that she is slightly bigger...” which could have been why she hadn't recognized the kinfa. Then again, baby kinfa grew so rapidly and oddly... she rarely could recognize them, and only then from the qualities of their feathers, which were slightly different.
Lerin held at her fingers for just a few seconds longer than was customary, his lightened daytime eyes flicking over her form inquisitively and assessingly. They'd met before the rumors of attacks and riots started flying, but he was not so foolish as to believe that many Alkidike had a great deal of patience for their Shifter neighbors. This one in particular had never showed a great deal of animosity toward him, but family did have a way of being persuasive... And most of the women seemed so stubborn and forthright that he could hardly even imaging someone who seemed so... passive, as Dyakida not falling for their words.
Still.
She seemed polite and cordial enough, as always, and Lerin released her hand, taking a half-step back with a satisfied hum. "It's good to see you, as well," he murmured in a low note. "And Peyla, of course," he added for the sprite's benefit, turning to give the chiming creature an acknowledging nod of his head.
He leaned down and extended an arm, close enough to the ground that his bright orange kinfa could hop onto the extended limb and shimmy up it to perch of his shoulder. "Fine as ever," Lerin replied. He reached his free hand to stroke Tandoori's chest. "She's getting too big to carry. If I were any smaller, I don't think I could. But she's growing faster than me- she's still got a ways to go, and I don't suppose she'll ever be able to fly, so... I'm really not even sure what to do with her." The admittance was a sad one. Lerin had hopes of getting out of Juahar in the near future. He couldn't leave Tandoori behind, but she would tire quickly if forced to hop around behind him for the majority of their travels.
She leaned in to chirp at his ear and give the shell of it a nibble, ruffling her feathers and digging her talons (unwittingly, of course) into his shoulder.
Peyla chimed – of course.
”Oh?” Dyakida moved her hair out of her face, listening, ”Why wouldn't she be able to fly?” She knew Tandoori, yes, from previous meetings, but she hadn't known that she was anything but a normal kinfa. ”Is she... damaged, in some way?”
Bah. That word. Damaged. It always made her shudder in revulsion whenever she heard it in this context. She'd heard it enough relating to herself, and thought it enough as she'd struggled to learn to live without her sight. It was an unpleasant word, though there were worse.
But this wasn't about her – this was about a bird that could grow to a size where it could easily carry someone on its back.
Peyla chimed, giving Tandoori a reproachful look – digging talons into people was rude!
Damaged. Lerin's lips thinned in distaste, and he turned his head to press his nose against Tandoori's wing. She clucked, fanning her feathers and laying the limb across the top of Lerin's head; comforting, confining, soft, and warm. Welcome. He'd never considered his companion as damaged. Damaged was something you said of a broken cup, or cracked tool, or soggy book. 'Damaged' was for things. Tandoori was not a thing.
"No," Lerin muttered stiffly, struggling to remain passive, despite the irrational amount of offense he took to Kida's question. "She was injured-" he stated firmly, "-when I found her. One of her wings was broken all to pieces. She was just a baby then, but... even so, I could see plain as day she wouldn't use it well ever again." He sighed as Doori leaped from her perch at his shoulder, fanning and flapping her wings as she descended back to the earth in a slowed fall. "And she hasn't. She looks normal enough, but she's still never flown. And I think it will be hard on her to hop after me wherever I go."
No, damaged was not truly the word, but Dyakida kept her face from registering the disgust, the pain, or even the shame she felt at using it and being reproached. There were few other choices that didn't hurt in equal amounts.
”That's terrible.” Dyakida said. What else did you say to that? Did one ask what he was doing to help, as if it was somehow his fault, now, that the bird was having trouble? Did one ask why the bird wasn't doing more to help itself? Both questions were absurd, and Dyakida held her tongue. Too long. The silence was awkward.
Peyla stopped in her attending to her pretty friend(s) to chime a warning. She stared, stiffly, into the brush before taking wing into the treetops. She soon returned with a thorn, chiming another warning.
”Peyla, what is it?” Dyakida asked, both wary of what threats would come and grateful for the breaking of the silence.
Of course, she could not see the glowing eyes and horns of radaku in the darkness around them. They were surrounded.
'Terrible' it may be, but as far as Lerin had thought about it, there seemed to be so little he could do to remedy the situation. Kinfa were neither meant, nor built to walk all their lives. Doori would survive traveling with him, but it would be a painfully slow journey once she became too large to carry. And without Juahar's trees to keep her off the ground, he couldn't imagine she would be very happy. He could leave her behind, of course, but he doubted any of his family would see to her care. She could hunt on her own, for the most part, so she wouldn't starve. But it was never easy to lose a companion. Particularly not your only companion.
He let out a soft exhale and tipped forward enough to touch the pads of his fingers to the feathers at the back of her neck. She ruffled her wings and let out a soft trill of what Lerin expected was encouragement, before her gaze swiveled toward the direction Peyla had come.
It was several seconds before Lerin's eyes actually picked out a shift in the forest's usual dimness. A soft, barely there glow of eyes and crystal. "Radaku..." He murmured softly. He'd been following a family of them for many months, and should've been well-aware of their habits by now, but these did not look familiar to him. And they traveled in a different pack formation than he was accustomed.
Silver irises flicked quickly to Dyakida. "We should take our leave. We're disturbing them..." It wasn't as though he carried anything to defend himself with.
Radaku.
Dyakida tensed, not sure whether she was sensing the predators movements, or if her own fear magnified every jostle of leaf into a pacing, ferocious beast. She reached for Lerin, hoping he was within arm's length. She was keen to follow his advice and get out of there, but there was no way to know which way to go. She knew where home was, and she had Peyla for guidance, but she didn't know where the radaku were. And there had to be at least a few. It was a marvel, she thought, that something so predatory could move so silently.
”Yes, lets...” she murmured. She could feel the wind from Peyla's wings gently caressing her face, a reminder that, in that respect, she still had eyes... and they were seeing something frightening. Not good. she thought, slipping her dagger from it's sheath and holding it in hand. It was far from useless – she could fight with it – but if she couldn't see the radaku, she was likely to be bitten and clawed before she could use the well-crafted blade. Not good. she repeated to herself. ”Lerin, are you armed?” she asked. It would be good to know.
Peyla hovered near her alkidike, brandishing her little thorn as menacingly as possible. The radaku circled and growled softly, coordinating, communicating. They had prey on their minds, and the anticipation of the hunt burned in their fierce eyes.
The growls sent chills up Dyakida's spine. Not good at all... she thought, gritting her teeth.
Lerin held back a startled yip as Dyakida's fingers came into contact with his arm. She reached for him, and instantly he felt a stab of pity. She knew there was danger but had no hope if seeing it. Immediately after pity came remorse for his own feelings. She was a grown woman and certainly didn't need him pitying her. As a noble Alkidike warrior, he doubted she would welcome it. He shook the thought away, and let his fingers curl around her arm. There were more pressing matters at hand, and it seemed unlikely her tribe would forgive any foul-ups on his part.
"I..." His gaze fell to one of the radaku, and his mind wandered to his whip: coiled up neatly and placed upon his shelf where it sat forgotten. "I am not," Lerin admitted somberly. Even if he didn't want to use it to hurt anyone or anything, the sound and movement probably would've been enough to deter a small pack of radaku from attacking. For the first time, Lerin wished he had his weapon and gave a moment to consider bringing it with him in the future.
Not that it did him any good in this moment.
His lashes dipped, and his attention fell to the ground. Briefly, without losing contact with Dyakida, he stooped and claimed a stick from the mud. It was neither a killing weapon nor one that a radaku's fangs couldn't break. But he still expected the sight of it would pose some instinctual sense of threat. "Don't be frightened, and don't run. I don't think this is a hunting party. I think it's a patrol. If we can escape them, they won't give chase."
