She had laid there for who knew how long, in pain, bleeding helplessly, powered down. When she had awoken she was in the hospital. Someone had found her, called 911 and here she was. Was she even awake? Was .....this real? Her head felt like it was underwater. Her vision was wobbly, everything was overly bright. Her hearing was muffled. Even her breathing felt heavy, like every breath was a struggle.
There was pain, of course. But for some reason she didn't care about it. Her eyes blinked rapidly, trying to force herself awake, trying to focus.
But her body was working against her. The edges of that too bright vision were blurring even more and then her eyes slipped shut again. Sleep took her, but not before she heard someone come into the room. She wanted to know who it was...
It would be a few more days before she finally came around. It wasn't as hard to open her eye this time.
Wait a second. Eye? What on earth happened...?
Her head felt like it was splitting open as she tried to figure out why she only had one eye. She had two before, didn't she? When she woke up the first time? When she opened her mouth to talk, her tongue felt like it was coated in cotton and glue. It wouldn't work properly, but someone had put a straw to her lips, was trying to coax her into sucking on it.
When she did, she was surprised by the cold water that suddenly filled her mouth, extinguishing an uncomfortable warmth in her mouth she hadn't known was there.
She opened her eye again and focused on the figure. ...It wasn't a nurse. Who was this man?
"Don't worry," he whispered to her, grinning in a way that sent up red flags. "I'll have someone take care of you."
Take care of her? What did that even mean? Why did someone have to take care of her?
"Wha-" Nope, talking wasn't happening. She was still drugged. At least, she thought that this is what being drugged felt like. It was a safe assumption considering she was in a hospital.
"No no, don't talk," the man said softly. "We take care of our own. You'll be better again soon. I think you'll enjoy who we've placed you with." The man laughed then, a sound that sent chills to her spine. "Just sleep again, Eris. You'll understand in a few days."
Again it seemed like her body was betraying her. That tunnel vision was coming back that meant her eye was closing. If she had the strength she would have fought, asked who Eris was. Instead she just let out a soft noise of protest before her body sank into that sweet oblivious state.
Somehow, she ended up waking up alone. They said they'd take care of her, and yet she was alone the next time she'd woken up.
It was then that she learned she couldn’t trust, even the ones on her side. She trusted no one.
