The Chroniclers Guild

Welcome to the Grand Library. Deep within the polished-stone caves beyond the vacant shelves resides the young heart of history. The guarded chambers lead deep into the cliff side. A grand circular chamber opens up into a bare-floored room disrupted only by a grand table. Light streams down into a bowl of crystals, illuminating the room in a soft blue light. Here, history is debated and recorded by those that reside within the dwellings beyond. It is here that the observations of the silent watchers are transcribed by ink and quill to one day fill the empty shelves of the grand library.

At the time of the longest day and the shortest day the silence is broken by the greeting and oath of the residents of this most secretive of places:

"We are the silence within the silence.
Our eyes are the eyes of history.
Our words are the words of the ages."

Welcome to the Chronicler's Guild.

The Code of the Chroniclers

A chronicler is an observer of history, not a creator there of.
Chroniclers are not to interfere, in any way, with events that they witness. This is sometimes a very difficult task. They are not fighters, protectors, heroes, or villains- they are mere witnesses. If a chronicler finds themselves unable to simply observe, they are to turn their backs and move on.

A chronicler must only record the truth of their observations.
Their personal feelings and bias cannot enter into their writings. Their job is to write their observations, not to make guesses or assertions after the cause and effect of their observations, the motives behind them, or their own personal desires. These things are up to the readers to decide.

A chronicler must bear the mask in silence.
When on official business, the chroniclers dawn their silver and golden masks which muzzle them from speaking. Physically, they cannot even cry out. They can lap up liquids and crack their mouths enough to eat tiny bites but they are restrained from speech. The most they can make are muffled sounds. Squeaks, moans, sighs, that sort of thing. They are not to interact with those around them- even their brothers and sisters - when wearing the mask.

A chronicler is a servant of the Grand Weaver alone.
The chroniclers hold no loyalty to a king, queen, tribe, or country. They can hold respect for another being but the Grand Weaver alone is their master. In this, behavior of blasphemy is considered treason. Defying the Grand Weaver, committing murder, rejecting the nature of their half-spirit, or deception are strictly forbidden in the life of a chronicler.

A chronicler speaks of their observations in ink alone.
When off-duty the chronicler is not to discuss their observations. They must lead double-lives essentially, keeping their observations within their masks and transcripts and their families and mates within their dens respectively.

A chronicler who defies the code must surrender the mask.
Any chronicler who breaks even one of the laws is removed from their duty and exiled from the grand library for the remainder of their lifespan.
