White boots hit the pavement with a sharp step, beating a too-quick rythm as Ida paced. She practically vibrated, she was so... angry. She was never angry, so this surge of powerful emotion was foreign and unwelcome. She didn't even understand why she was so upset, but the longer she thought on the things that senshi girl had said, the way she had looked at her... the more upset she became. She needed to talk to someone. Anyone. But mostly someone who might possibly understand.
Slender fingers fussed with her phone as Ida cradled it, torn over reaching out. She didn't like to bother people, but... she needed to talk to someone about this or she was going to fuss over it all night. Thumbing up the correct number, Ida nibbled her lower lip for a moment longer. Hvergelmir, read the screen.
If I can't talk to Hver, of all people... who can I? Its... okay, once in a while, to need someone. I have to remember that.
Hitting the button, she lifted it to her ear and waited for the ring, shifting around before she started walking again. One hand wrapped around her compact, gripping it tight.

The advantage of being a knight was the ability to send and receive messages at any time of day, powered or not. She may not have had a normal-looking cell phone, but -- sitting in her apartment, waiting for Spaghetti-Os on the hot plate -- it didn't matter: she felt the familiar tickling inside her head that said she had a call to be answered. The disadvantage, certainly, was the lack of a caller ID. With a voice-to-voice communication, she had no way of knowing who'd be on the other end when she answered. Laney raised her hand to her mouth, bringing the ring close to talk into it. "Hello?" she greeted.

"H-Hver, ah..." Ida's voice cracked and she forced herself to take a deep breath, trying to find some calm. She felt a little horrible calling her out of the blue like this... She could be doing any number of things that would be better uninterrupted, but she recognized that inherent fear for what it was. Fear of rejection, of being turned away when she really needed someone. Trust was hard... Even with non-earth-shattering things.
"I need someone to talk to." Ida admitted, her voice thick. Realizing how that sounded, she rushed to explain. "I'm okay! I just... I ran into a senshi I'd never met before and she started asking things about the way I glow now, you know? But, she got upset. I'm just... I don't know. I'm upset and I need someone to talk to about it."
Her voice lowered and she felt stupid once again for calling. And then felt it again for waffling. They were friends... This was what friends did for each other. She would be happy to have Laney call her if positions were reversed... Why did she worry so much? Ida fussed with her compact as she took up walking again, this time at a slower pace.
"... Are you free?"

Laney's heart felt pinched, hearing the upset in Ida's voice. She was relieved, of course, to know that in body, Ida was safe and sound -- but if Ida was upset enough to seek a friend, she must've been very upset indeed. Fortunately, Laney lived for opportunities in life to be of help and comfort to the people she loved. She felt, if anything, quietly elated that Ida had trusted her enough to call. She didn't need the whole story now, before she even agreed to meet. She just needed to know that Ida needed her. "Free as a bird," she said with reassuring ease. "Where can I meet you, sweetheart?"

The flood of relief brought Ida's shoulders down into a more natural line and she let her breath go, taking tension with it. She'd been right to trust Hver. It had been silly to worry over it. Hvergelmir was someone in a unique position to understand both sides of this tangle. She remembered what it was like to be like this, but she wasn't in this timeline. Maybe she could understand better than Ida herself why someone would wear such a look of disgust when hearing about the changes she had undergone.
"Anywhere is fine." She said in a firmer voice. "If you're at home I can meet you on top of the Kingfisher building, 5th and Main? They have a little patio set up for smoking breaks." Everyone should have gone home by now, so the rooftop should be undisturbed through their visit. No one would even know they'd been there.
"And thanks, Hver." Ida said with feeling as she turned to go.
The trip to the little three story accounting building didn't take long. She hadn't been that far to start with and eternal speed made short work of it. It gave her something for distraction through travel, but the short distance also meant short diversion. The moment she landed on the surrounding ledge, she was thinking about that senshi girl again. The look she'd given her and the frost in her voice. And every thing Ida had brought up as to why this wasn't a bad thing had only made it worse.
Unable to sit, the senshi paced the ledge instead, her arms wrapped around her ribs and her eyes on the streets below.

"Just putting some saran-wrap on some leftovers," Laney said, which was vague and semi-true. She was fairly certain that half-cooked Chef Boyardee would keep for a few hours -- it was probably mostly chemicals and preservatives anyway. "I'll meet you there in a few." Although she dutifully carried on with the jogging routine her personal trainer, Bethany, had once advised, it was fair to say that athletics were not Laney's primary area of interest. Having Vanessa to run with had been the only thing that made the undertaking bearable. Beyond that, she'd never exactly put much time into physical fitness. Accordingly, once she was finished with the call, she unplugged her hot plate and threw a lid over her dinner, then hastily locked her apartment door and went about a block over to transform. She hated ricochet jumping. It was exhausting and difficult, especially going upward, and she wasn't that great at it. Hvergelmir mentally groaned at Ida's selected meeting place: then, because she could -- because she was horribly lazy -- she summoned Eikthyrnir and forewent the whole rooftop parkour and ricochet jumping routine in favor of just teleporting to the place where Ida had asked to meet. Hvergelmir dismounted, looking for Ida -- and spotted her by the roof ledge, peering down. The knight held our her arms in the universal gesture for let me hug you, and said, with a tender smile, "Come here, sweetheart."

Ida had always liked rooftops for their height and their solitude. Ever since the documentary that had labeled them terrorists, she had tried to avoid civilians as much as possible. For someone who could jump more than two stories in one leap, roofs were ideal. It never even occurred to think Hver might not feel the same.
The sudden blossom of a knight signature on her inner radar startled Ida out of her thoughts. She dropped her arms as she turned, but the face dismounting from the blue deer was familiar. So was the deer and for a moment, Ida was swept away by the sounds of people screaming and the smell of burning tar.
Tell him I'm going to light my beacon when we get outside for just a moment and he needs to cover his eyes. As soon as I stop, he needs to tag the largest auras in the area. And be ready to ride out.
So many people dead. So many crying out for help. Chari's hand in hers and the cool, slick feel of the mirror's surface dragging over her skin.
Her heels scraped on the stone as Ida shifted and she was back on the roof, surrounded by clean air and the quiet city at night. She still fancied she could smell smoke.
God, it had been weeks since the last time. She'd thought she was over these... Whatever they were. It did nothing to improve her already poor mood and Ida's face crumpled as Hver opened her arms. She was off the ledge in a stride and a handful more put her in reach to wrap her arms firmly around the knight's waist. Her forehead came to rest on a bare shoulder and she breathed deeply through her nose to clear the memories away.
She was determined not to cry, but the comfort did more to erode her control than the anger had. Ida managed, but only with great effort and more deep breaths.

Hvergelmir felt warm and content holding Ida in her arms. She was, undoubtedly, worried about whatever had gotten the other girl so upset -- but she felt pleased to be of use, pleased to be the one offering comfort instead of receiving it . . . pleased, most of all, that Ida had clearly decided she could trust Hvergelmir in her most vulnerable moments. "Shhh, sweetheart, don't worry," she soothed, carding her fingers gently through Ida's hair so it wouldn't snag. "Whatever it is, we'll figure it out together. It's okay, you're okay. Just stay here as long as you need. I've got you." Ida was warm and soft, and felt good pressed into her arms. She smelled nice, too. If she'd wanted to stay like that for another hour, Hvergelmir didn't think she'd mind.

"I'm glad you're okay." Ida said softly against Hver's shoulder as she gave her a tighter hug before she eased her hold. "If I didn't say that before, I am."
Holding Hver felt good, all the more for remembering how it had felt to lose her. Being held by her felt even better. It felt safe. Non-judgemental. When Ida straightened up, she scrubbed her face with both hands and sighed. This was what she had needed. Someone who cared about her, just showing her they did.
"I ran into a senshi girl I hadn't met before today. Taller than I am, pink-red hair... Her sphere was some sort of melon, I think? She had pink gloves and a puffy skirt. She never told me her name." She remembered the look of her pretty well. It was hard to say if Hver had ever met her before. She said she'd been around for four years. That felt like a long time to meet people. "I don't know if she'd had a bad day or what, but she was distinctly cold when I greeted her. I wouldn't have cared, I mean... I don't expect everyone to be cheery or welcoming all the time. But... she acted strangely, asking me questions about the glow and then getting this strange expression when I tried to explain it to her."
Ida's face scrunched as she sighed. "I'm probably being silly and overly sensitive about this. It just... bothered me, the way she looked at me. Like... like I was diseased. And I'd willing done it to myself."

Hvergelmir folded a hand against her chin, contemplative. "I don't know any senshi by that description," she confessed. "But I don't really know that many senshi yet." She listened sympathetically to what Ida was saying. It sounded like it was more about how this senshi had made Ida feel -- which meant that this wasn't an issue of whether or not that other senshi had been a jerk, but an issue of Ida wanting to be reassured that her feelings were valid. Hvergelmir, who often wanted to be reassured that her feelings were valid, could understand. "It would bother me too, if it were me," she promised. There was no point in saying that Hvergelmir was no stranger to strangers criticizing her for what she chose to do with her knighthood, or that she was considering getting YES, I KNOW IT'S PRACTICALLY SUICIDE tattooed on her other shoulder to try and forestall the inevitable commentary -- but she imagined that was part of why Ida was here. Hvergelmir could certainly sympathize on the subject of the unwanted opinions of strangers. "But whatever that senshi thinks is way off-track. I mean, what does the glow mean to you? What do you think it represents? Does it feel like something bad or wrong?"

"No!" Ida said urgently as she grabbed Hver's hand. "Its not bad... that's why I'm so confused! I didn't do anything wrong... This... this power is good. It feels... right."
"Its a connection to something so much... bigger than I am. Ida is so old and unchanging... a place that's set apart from the war. Even as much power as it has inside of it, its vulnerable too and needs protecting... and that's what I'm tied to now. In return, it gives me so much... Not just energy, but its own sort of protection and... comfort that I sorely need." The senshi pressed a hand to her chest, curling her fingers into the bow that pinned her hood to her bodice. "When I told her my starseed was safe, she called it an 'unmitigated choice' that I couldn't get out of... but I don't understand what's so wrong with that. The alternative is what? Corruption, either willing or by force? I'd never chose to corrupt, and being forced to it isn't a choice either. If I would always chose to be Order, why is it bad that I'm guaranteed it now?"
Ida drew a deep breath and blew out between pursed lips. She was getting worked up again and could feel it in the warmth of her cheeks and face. Even her heart beat faster beneath her hand. She might have gotten a little... insistent there, but no one had ever asked her how it felt before. What it meant to her.
"This connection is a deep part of me... treating it like something low and degrading like that... it felt like it was me she was belittling." She said softly, her shoulders drooping. "I didn't do anything wrong this time, Hver. Its not fair."
There were plenty of things to look down on her for... she never thought her connection to her planet would be one of them. Shazari I had to rewrite this entire post because it was just Ida rambling about how AWESOME her planet is and how much she loves it and it made zero coherent sense.

Hvergelmir smiled and clasped Ida's hands in her own. "If it's good for you . . . for your connection with your power, your world -- then it's good. That's what matters. Your relationship with your power is your business. Listen to me . . . " She paused, considering it. Planning her words. "Maybe -- maybe a change of scene would do you some good. Can I take you away somewhere, princess?"

"Go somewhere? Of course, Hver..." The sudden request was surprising, but really, how could she refuse? It never even occurred to Ida to say no. "Anywhere you want."
Hver still called her 'Princess'... even knowing she didn't have that power and might never have it again. It was a bitter-sweet sort of feeling, to hear it, like that time in the hospital. Ida's hands tightened around hers and she took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. This is why she'd come to her. Just being together was comforting, holding hands with someone who cared and agreed with.
She hadn't done anything wrong, and hearing someone else offering support helped a lot. Especially this someone.

It got easier each time, calling out to her Wonder. She held it in her mind, picturing her connection to it like a tether -- then she grabbed onto the line and pulled. The world melted away. All its glass and metal an cement, all its water towers and HVAC units and antennae and high rises, gone; in their place, the stars came out, swarming in greater congregations than the pale shimmer of night in the Solar System. The silvery metal of the pier formed beneath their feet, sturdy and unshaking -- and far at the end of it lay her island, quietly waiting: its great, white Ionic columns the only thing that stood out against the sparkling sky. Hvergelmir held onto both of Ida's hands firmly. It was always dangerous, arriving on the pier; there was a worry that someday, someone would take fright and stumble toward the edge. She watched Ida with a faint smile and a curious expression.

She felt the teleportation and she relaxed into it, like into the arms of a friend. The world around her changed, the green and orange and grey of the city melting into pale whites, rich purple and blues of space and marble structures.
It was an unconcous reaction to look up the moment she arrived on Hver's island and as she did the vast spread of stars filled her view. It stretched forever in rivers and seas of light, dots of brightness in a field of velvet black you almost couldn't see. It caught at something inside of her, making her chest feel tight and expansive at the same time. It was like looking up into the endless blue of Ida's sky, leaving her feeling weightless and grounded and connected. Like she was filled with light too and the lights called each other.
Ida laughed herself and the silly, romantic thoughts as she brought her eyes down, beaming amusement. For a moment Hver looked like she glowed too and Ida laughed at herself again as she wiped away a tear that had escaped her.
"Sorry." She huffed softly. "It's just really pretty here. I like it."
It wasn't Ida, that felt so much a part of her, but it was beautiful in its own way. Her own asteroid would always be first, but all of the lands that gave order its powers held a small place in her heart.
