In fact, in his confusion, he completely forgot to even obtain a horse for the journey, clutching his stomach and muttering as he shuffled out of the city gates on his own two legs.Quote: Rolling a 4: You catch some medieval version of dysentry and feel extremely sick. He really should have been small enough to traverse the mountain path without incident, but somehow he managed to almost plummet to his death anyway.Quote: Rolling a 1: You accidentally slip, almost fall to your demise off a mountain cliff, and drop some of the food! It was therefore a bit unfortunate that Bren had to turn around almost immediately.

He was pretty sure he shouldn't have been feeling such enthusiasm when times were so dark and he had been so sick. Surely that was in a book somewhere. A "What Not to do in Order to Look Normal" guidebook to help him become a better knight. For reasons he couldn't quantify, the spoils of Brenley's journeys pleased him far more than anything else had in his recent memory. He hoped that was only because he couldn't remember anything that had happened to him a month ago, but he suspected he would have felt this way regardless.
The boy set out early that morning, the blackened sky as dark as it always was. He had brought about the same amount of food that he had on his last two journeys, but this time he barely felt burdened at all. It probably had a great deal to do with the presence of his horse and the fact that he wasn't feverish and nauseous.
Brenley took a deep breath of slightly stale air and smiled, the expression tight and somewhat mirthless. It was good to be back on the road again.

Luckily, trekking through the mountains without a horse wasn't nearly so difficult when he wasn't violently ill. A large majority of the paths seemed made for single people as it was, which made Bren wonder if the journey was being made more difficult by the Great Knight's near insistence on one. Of course, he had made it out without one last time, but he had a feeling it was only because the guards hadn't wanted to deal with an apprentice with insistent dysentery. Oddly enough, once he was away from the most treacherous of the paths, the horse returned to him, suspiciously kneeling to help him onto its back.
Some time later, he and his steed—Robson this time—reached the edge of the ominous forest that reportedly teemed with spiders and elves. Still an awful rider when compared to most, Bren waited until his horse decided to move forward rather than attempting to guide it himself. He pat it on the neck when it did. Maybe positive reinforcement was the path to take here. Not that he'd had the same horse for more than one of these trips anyway.
Continuing on, the boy was pleased to find a couple of parcels of food obviously left behind by other travelers. He tried not to think about their likely demise as he secured the rations in his pack.Quote: Rolling a 2: Someone seems to have left food on the road for you! How nice! +10 food. Robson's loyalty proved to be short lived. As soon as they passed from the forest into the labyrinth, the horse began to fuss, weaving back and forth at a greater and greater speed until Brenley could no longer hold on. The boy dribbled to the ground in an undignified pile, coming face to face with a grimy skull. He didn't like getting so close to the decay in here, preferring to see it from the back of an animal or the safety of the path. Bren grabbed his remaining food and continued on.Quote: Rolling a 5: Your horse gives up on you, running away. Every turn you take, you must subtract another additional 5 food from the caravan. All of his unhappiness and apprehension melted away when he saw the cavern's edge. He had thought the feeling of discovery would eventually dull or fade completely, but Bren was still enamored by the gifts this place had granted so far. He peeked over the lip of rock, falling back when an eagle took a swipe at him. Where was that old man today?
In the absence of a self-proclaimed wizard, Brenley was eventually forced to barrel on ahead, waving his arms and shouting to dissuade the birds from taking his eyes. He didn't stop when he reached the bright blue gauntlets, scooping them safely into his arms as he passed.Quote: Rolling a 1: Giant unexplainable eagles start attacking you! Ow!
