He was slated to go out on another quest--his third, in fact. Jack began to wonder just how many of these were required in order to be considered competent enough to not go. A full set of armor was a hefty reward for his efforts, but frankly he would have rathered been back in the library, studying...But such was the life of a knight: always on the move, always in search of something for someone higher in rank for themselves.

(He couldn't help but think, what exactly did it take to become a great knight? what did they possess that the others did not, beyond prowess?)

It was neither here nor there. He could wonder all he wanted while on the ride through Camelot, with a sky darker than the nastiest bruise and the hordes of their worst enemy at their doorstep.

His contemplative mood didn't last for very long. Along the way, Jack and his horse found themselves entangled in a different area than before, and now they located somewhere he wasn't quite familiar with. The hum of insects made him particularly on edge (their buzzing like an eerie drone amidst the darkness), and it was affecting his mount in a similar fashion. One wrong step meant--

--bees. Angry, large, swarming bees. In a flash, Jack was knocked off his horse as it reared back and brayed in fear, dizzying him enough to make the world spin as he tried to make his own get away. Several bees stung him in his escape, but he wondered if a horse could really outrun a tenacious hive.

More importantly, could he?

As it was, he could this time. Fear, training, and a healthy sense of adrenaline-filled direction did wonders for one acting more on instinct than logic.

Eventually, panting and sweating in his armor, Jack made it to the winding forest. The last few times he went in, a large spider had gone after him; this time, he was more methodical about staying on the path, slower to keep his pace steady as well as let him catch his breath. Along the way, Jack found scraps of food that weren't too dirtied by the road and happily plucked these pieces up to clean and eat. With his mount gone and his own food sources dwindling, it wasn't wise to start being picky.

Another group's misfortune was his lucky break; he couldn't begin to be bothered feeling guilty about it.

Out past the forest was the mountains. He navigated the narrow edges carved into the mountain with bated breath, growing more nervous the higher he went. (Was this a lost memory? Did he want to know?) At length he found himself once again in the labyrinth, one of his least favorite places of the journey if not the least of them all.

Okay. He watched his step as closely as he had in the forest to...no avail. A different tile was triggered, and this time a wall slid open and revealed the hissing, angry snakes that wanted to eat him. This was contradictory to what he knew of the species, who were for the most part not aggressive without provocation.

But one couldn't throw metaphorical books at actual animals. One could only run some more and hope one managed to keep ahead.

And so it was that Jack Hawthorn made it back up the mountain's very last hill again, snake-bitten, foot-sore, and a little more than just dirty. There was no old man there to greet him this time, but the peace was welcoming after the journey. He spent a few minutes cleaning himself up and merely looking out onto the vista before grabbing his prize and heading back. Still, it bothered him that the king had yet to be found by anyone...
