It was pointless, searching outside the city walls for a man who was most certainly dead. Brenley might have given up altogether if it hadn't been for the treasure he had brought back with him.

The boy didn't even know what to call this particular piece of armor. Shoulder leathers? Muscle pads? And why did it have so many gems all over it? Was it magical? He had spent all night staring at it when he wasn't tending to his eagle wounds, and when still didn't have any answers. He had come to the conclusion that the only thing to do to assuage his curiosity was to try to bring back something else.

He had the stablemaster choose him another horse, having not gotten particularly attached to his first, and then he was off, with a great deal more food than was entirely necessary. Just in case of eagles.

[ step one ]

Mountains were a complete bore. When Brenley actually pondered his own thoughts on the subject, he realized he was being rather idiotic, but his opinion still stood. Even though the world was unraveling quite messily, mountains were boring.

At least until you fell off of one.

Besides being horrible at riding, Brenley was also horrible at nature. It was how he managed to fail to notice a tree jammed full of bees until his face was directly in its branches. The mountains were doubly interesting when you were fighting to remain away from their edges while also being repeatedly stung in your ears, lips, cheeks, and eyelids.

When the siege ended, Brenley was alone. His horse had fled, and he was down an indeterminate amount of food. He supposed it was a good thing he had brought so much.

[ step two ]

The horse came back a short time later, though it didn't get very close or show any indication that it wanted to be approached. Brenley didn't want to get anywhere near the beast anyway. He might have stuck his tongue out at it. There was no one who could confirm whether he had or hadn't.

When he found enough food to replace what he'd lost to the bees and then some, the boy was momentarily appeased.

Of course, he had no way to carry it, but he had a fine lunch before he moved on.

Rolling a 2: Someone seems to have left food on the road for you! How nice! +10 food.

[ step three ]

"WHAT?" Brenley yelled at the distant horse. They had entered the labyrinth about an hour prior, and he was getting tired of being followed. His shout echoed satisfyingly off of the stone walls around him, but that feeling only lasted a short while once he caught sight of the skeletons again.

"Come here or leave. I don't want to see you..." he wiggled his fingers, "...doing whatever that is."

Horse and boy stared at each other some more. It went on for such a long time that Bren almost thought the animal would rejoin him. Then, with a snort that must have been very loud for him to hear it all the way where he was, the horse flicked its tail and fled for good.

[ step four ]

There came a time during his journey when he instinctively knew which way to go. He had only been up here once, but he remembered it like it had been... yesterday.

Brenley coughed.

When he reached the familiar ridge that signified the end of the cavern, the boy paused. If there was no treasure at the top of this mountain, he would remain in Camelot until the horsemen came to him. None of this questing nonsense, no more looking for some old man to be a symbol of hope. Finding these... things felt like something he was supposed to—

"Excuse me, boy. I am heading off on a magical journey with my feathered friends and I cannot carry all of this delicious food. Would you be at all interested in taking it from me?"

Feathered friends? Eagles? Brenley nodded shallowly and remained safely hidden by the cave's mouth.

"Have a safe trip."

The man clapped Bren on the back and deposited the food at his feet.

"From one wizard to another, tally ho!"

He waited until "wizard" and eagles were gone before emerging himself. As he had hoped, there was more treasure waiting for him.

Quote:
Rolling a 6: An old man claiming to be a wizard hands you some food. Thanks, you guess? +10 food.
