Teamwork did not seem to come naturally to Mildred, and the challenge of cooperating and ensuring the safety and preservation of her fellow apprentices had done well to encourage her to push past her boundaries. It was an easy external stimulus to help her press onward, and she anxiously stood on the cusp of attempting this alone. The doubts were crippling - could she truly make real progress own her own? Should she have sought a new group to travel with? Was it worse to go alone, or to embark with others? She stood next to Moon, who patiently waited beside her with the weight of her rations, thumb anxiously rubbing itself raw as it moved back and forth across the leather reins she held in her hand. He wouldn't have to search long. On his way back from his success, already donning his shining new helm, he found her preparing to embark on her own journey. It would have been prudent to give her the chance to adventure on her own, and the time to think things through.
He was not a prudent man.
He bounced the reins and sped up Galaxy's gallop, bearing down on her with the force of a man on a mission. When he arrived, however, all of that confidence seemed to flee in favor of something a lot more like unfamiliar shyness. He pulled off his helm, and ran his hand through the tirelessly gorgeous locks of hair.
Then he remembered she couldn't see him, and all of the imaginary wind keeping it windswept was blown out like a candle.
"Mildred." He breathed out her name in hushed excitement. "I have returned."

It was obvious that she had not been expecting company, and that she had been far too lost in her thoughts - the thundering approach of the large horse's hooves jarred her back into reality, and she dropped the reins as she turned in time to hear the sound of her name in Robert's voice. Had she been paying more attention, she would have taken into account the fact that she'd been standing on the edge of the natural outcropping. But she had not been, so she opened her mouth to return the greeting and immediately disappeared backwards over the edge. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 57 YOUR HP: 30

His awkward grin turned into absolute horror as he leapt off of his horse to climb down to retrieve her. With one hand he pulled her up into his arm, and with the other he heaved them back up to the surface. This would have been a wonderful moment, had the face of a wild boar not been the first thing that greeted them when they made it back up. Nevertheless, his sword was out in moments, and the boar was vanquished with little difficulty. Step one Quote: Rolling a 2: You encounter a wild *animal here* that is extremely rabid and ferocious. It blocks the path and attacks you! You take -10 damage! QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 57 YOUR HP: 20

In the struggle to regain their footing, some of the rations had spilled over the side with her and into the dirt. That was not particularly appealing, especially considering the terrible stomachaches of quests past, so she left it there. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 52 YOUR HP: 30

Losing such a fair chunk of rations so soon was disappointing, and Mildred stared down at them with a heavy sigh. She paused, then turned to look at the slain boar. What a convenience. "Let us celebrate your return and your kill," she quietly proposed, gaze falling towards her feet, "by roasting it to boost our rations before we continue. And...if you are hungry...we could feast upon it now, if you would like to." QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 52 + 10 = 62 YOUR HP: 30 Quote: Rolling a 2: Someone seems to have left food on the road for you! How nice! +10 food.

He laughed, dropping down onto his a** as he slid his sword behind his back. The entire situation felt so strange. So disjointed. He couldn't help himself. He laughed, to release the tension building up within. "Aye, we can roast it. My stomach wants nothing to do with food right now." It was twisted and tied into knots just looking at her, still dusty from almost falling off of a ravine. This was going to be so much harder than he'd thought. He took his time starting and stoking a fire meant to roast his kill, and by the time he was done with it, Galaxy had wandered off and escaped. The horse was so petty with its time. "GALAXY." He yelled out, setting two fingers to his mouth to whistle out for it as they walked. "HERE GIRL." Step 2 Quote: Rolling a 3: Your horse gives up on you, running away. Every turn you take, you must subtract another additional 5 food from the caravan. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 57 YOUR HP: 20

As he worked to get the fire started, she busied herself with the task of preparing the boar for roasting. Her approach was done with such clinical care, her hands moving steady and delicate over its still-warm corpse as she worked. It seemed that the blood and the gore of its fatal wounds didn't bother her, even when it stained her palms red as she bound the legs together with firm, intricate knots of rope. "Are you feeling ill, or did you sate your appetite before embarking?" she asked, wiping her hands on an empty rations cloth from Moon's pack. She stood to offer her assistance in putting their (eventual) feast over the fire, and had just stepped towards the flames when something burst forth from it, lunging in her direction. "Run! Leave it!" Yanking hard on the horse's reins, she glanced over her shoulder to ensure that he was following. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28 YOUR HP: 30 Quote: Rolling a 4: You hear a horrific roaring noise and when you look behind you you see a terrifying beast made of fire chasing you! In your horror you lose half the remaining caravan food.

She didn't need to tell him twice. Stumbling onto a snake booby trap was the least of his troubles when he had done it while trying to run as fast as he could away from a fiery beast. They had been running so steadily in their efforts to flee whatever that had been that they made it to the designated location of the artifact much faster than she planned, and she met the sight of it with a sharp sigh of relief. But the steady pace of their movements made it glaringly apparent when the sounds that she had gotten used to hearing from Robert's traveling were disrupted, and Mildred noticed their absence just after her fingers curled around the item. Hurriedly stuffing it into the pouch at her hip, she turned back to see what might have happened to him. It didn't take long to notice that he had veered off the path for some reason - something chasing him, perhaps? It was impossible to see what it might be from where she stood, so she tried to climb up on Moon's back. And was knocked right off again by a massive eagle, who was not at all pleased at the thief that had just stolen its most favorite piece of shiny nesting material. "Robert?" she tried to call to him, swatting wildly at the eagle until it caught itself on the curve of her scythe. The combined weight was a bit difficult to bear, so she dropped the weapon and the dying bird attached to it and craned her neck to watch for any response from him. "Are you all right?" QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 23 YOUR HP: 20 Quote: Rolling a 1: Giant unexplainable eagles start attacking you! Ow! You take -10 damage for yourself.

It was the sound of a horse, and not Robert, that greeted Mimsy first. Galaxy had come when she called for her master, just in time for the man to appear on the edge of the hill she'd climbed. He pulled himself up, and rolled onto his back, breathing hard as his heart pounded away within. The horse, glad to see him, leaned down and smacked his face with her muzzle.
"Too little, too late, Galaxy." He grumbled, standing up to - dizzy - stomach - pain - sick -
Robert bent over the edge of the hill and lost the contents of his earlier meal. He remembered this feeling. He remembered it so well. When his stomach was empty, he slowly climbed on top of Galaxy, and gave Mildred a weak and pained expression.
"Congratu-" And then he was out, head slamming against the horse.

As she feared, Robert was ill. He might not have answered her earlier inquiry on the matter, but the answer was very apparent on its own. Mildred shared a Look with Galaxy as he collapsed onto the horse's back, and she shook her head as she cautiously approached him to avoid spooking his mount.
Working quickly to ensure that Moon was settled and ready for the journey home - including the beautifully feathered carcass of the eagle - she tied one horse's reins to the other's. She then wet a (non-bloodied) cloth with her remaining water, and carefully removed his helm, which she fastened alongside the last few rations. Ah, a new addition, wasn't it?
"Congratulations," she murmured, tenderly wiping his face clean with the cool cloth before draping it over the back of his neck in the hope that it might soothe some discomfort.
