The king was still missing, and all he had to show for his efforts was one measly artifact. While Jack wasn't sure he would have as much luck on his second venture, he knew he had to try. It was his duty as a knight after all.
But with the sky dark and the horde awaiting, it was an even more dangerous venture than usual. Lips pressed into a thin line, he snuck out with his horse as quietly as he could in armor.

Would he have better luck alone? It felt a little more...right, he supposed. There was nothing to substantiate it, but he had managed to get the artifact on his own last time. Knights were encouraged to work together, but some things could be done to prove one's own power; individual control was just as important as a cohesive group.
It still would have been nice to have a partner whenever he slipped, though.

It was a long way down. He winced as his armor scraped against the rock, losing a few pieces of bread along the way but otherwise managing to get out unscathed. The animals roaming the place didn't seem to be around or were otherwise too preoccupied to bother him.

The forest yawned before him next. Would the place be more dangerous with the horseman horde at Camelot, or less? Maybe the elves had avoided the bulk of the enemies...
What hadn't moved out were the damn spiders, though. A giant one assaulted him again, and Jack was forced to flee within the first hour in. The twisting paths of the trees confused him, but he didn't mind their company so much; the sound of the wind through the leaves reminded him of a melody lost to memories.

The labyrinth was up next. Jack gave himself a breather against a tree first and availed himself of some water, wary of entering willy nilly. The last time he had attempted to do so, he had set off a trap that had caused vipers to coil around his legs and bite in the weak points of his armor, and he wasn't wanting to repeat the experience any time soon.
Cautiously, he chose a different path through the labyrinth, trying to remember his location in relevance to the proximity of the path he had chosen before. It was unfortunately confusing and mentally draining work, and he grew a little too lax in his vigilance. One wrong step and--
Schink!
A slot opened up in the wall next to him, filled with holes. Holes that soon became loaded with arrows.
Jack broke into a run and eventually found the exit, but not first without becoming a pin cushion.

He nearly collapsed outside of the maze and managed to keep on his feet only with the thought that if he sat down now, he wasn't sure he'd be able to get back up. Bent over, Jack caught his breath and then began working the arrows out of his body, unpleasant shivers rolling up his spine as he broke shafts and pressed bandages to the worst areas. He'd need a more private space with better resources to handle the damage, but for now it would do.
Aching and wheezing, he leaned on his horse for the journey up the last hill. As before, the strange old man was there with an offer of food. While last time Jack had been leery of him, these days decent food was hard to find, and he needed to keep his strength up for the ride back. So he thanked the old man and wished him well, though frankly if he was capable of living on the mountain without any aid, he probably didn't need it...
As before, he grabbed the artifact, stuck it in a pack on the horse, and lead it out. Better to return home before it grew much worse out here...
