He'd come back just in time to hear the screaming. Rushing through the halls, he searched for her, for them, because he was sure the cur had not left her alone for one single second while he was gone. He stormed past the rush of people running towards the battle, but his eyes scanned each face, in the hopes of recognition.

He was doing it again.

He turned around, his rushed footsteps stilling to stare instead at the looming exit that all of the knights were headed towards. They were off to battle, armed and prepared for glory and honor, and possibly for death. They were doing what he'd been meant to do, and he was chasing after a girl.

This was absurd.

Robert growled, possessed by a sudden ferocious need to prove himself, and brandished his sword (nearly decapitating a knight who ran by in the process). He had a job to do. He had a job to do. It was high time he went and did it.

As responsible as she found herself feeling over Robert's injuries during their quest, any worry that might have blossomed in his absence had turned to frustration, then indignation, when Mildred discovered that he had disappeared upon making his recovery. The only two options that seemed at all feasible here were that he was attempting to play an astoundingly cruel joke on her, in which she would have to face the belief that he had met his demise due to her negligence, or that she was simply not important enough to be informed of his survival.

She busied herself in attempts to get her bearings, learning the locations of as many of the accessible portions of the kingdom as she could, and was on her way to make a second attempt at data recovery when the ground beneath her began to shake. As she struggled to steady herself, the knights and her fellow apprentices flooded through the halls, spreading word of an attack and pushing past her in their eager determination to halt it.

Overwhelmed, she backed into a niche within the stone wall and watched them pass, pressing herself so firmly against the wall that she seemed to be making her best attempt to disappear into it. She would just impede them. She would be more harm than good, just like before.

She stood up on the tips of her toes and tried to look over the steady stream of bodies moving towards the exterior walls. Maybe if she could make it back to the decrepit little library, she would be useful there...

He'd joined the flow of movement, and felt his old self begin to emerge again. He knew exactly who he was, and how impressive of a person he could be. This was his moment! He was going to carve up the enemy into little pieces and cut a righteous path through until there was nothing left but -

"Mildred."

He saw her hiding in the niche as he passed, and the sight of her knocked him clear out of the delusion he'd been loftily daydreaming about, but the flow of movement was unstoppable, and they carried him several feet past her niche until he was out of sight.

Several moments later, he fought through until he was back to where she'd hidden, and he wedged himself awkwardly in to a spot where his body refused to actually fit. He looked awkward and unseemly, shoved there between her and the crowd. It had been a bad idea.

"I've found you." He informed her, his voice strained from the lack of breath he was able to take. He pushed himself back out again out of sheer necessity, and flattened himself against the wall instead, hiding her from view. This time, when he said it, he could at least sound a little more familiarly arrogant about it.

"Found you."

It was easy to excuse the sound of her name as her imagination, as an incorrect perception of someone else's interest in calling someone who wasn't her, someone seeking another Mildred who happened to be somewhere close by. Robert went otherwise unnoticed as he passed, merging with the collective smudges that were her companions-in-arms.

But he changed that all at once, appearing with a presence both impossible to ignore and impossible to escape. Being pinned against the wall rose a panic within her, in spite of his familiarity - she looked up at him with the wide eyes of cornered prey, body anxiously frozen as her pulse began to race.

If his absence was some sort of cruel attempt at humor, what was this?

"Why were you seeking me?" she asked, tilting her head, her brow beginning to twitch with a growing panic and a barely restrained annoyance. "I did not leave without warning."

She remained tense, though her shoulders had begun to ache from how fiercely she was continuing her attempts to become one with the wall.

She was angry at him. For leaving. He should have been worried, or fearful, or perhaps angry himself. Not fluttering with excitement over the fact that he'd been missed.

"Because," He whined. "You and the boy had succeeded where I had failed. Don't you see? I had to make up for what I had lacked. And sure, I had to try a little harder. Sure, I had to work a little more than the adolescent. But lo, feast your eyes!" He pulled back just enough to flourish his arms at the leggings he was wearing, partially covered by the rest of his armor.

"I am successful, as I am in all things! Now we match!"

Not that he needed proof of such a thing. He simply assumed.

But the fact was, she was still angry at him for leaving. It was a necessary excursion, and he knew he'd do it again if it meant dominance over the whelp who sought the jewel just as he did, but it was easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission. So he got down on one knee in front of her, and held out his hand.

"My jewel. Please, forgive this lowly soul. My every action is done with you in mind, even those that take me far from your shining, brilliant presence. Will you ease my guilty burden with your favor?"

Nailed it.

It almost seemed that he had this answer prepared, or that he had at least been troubled by this particular predicament for some time now. She could not have come up with so many words about feelings without putting a considerable amount of thought into it beforehand, at least; she almost suspected that she might not be capable of such an expression of sentiment even with prior preparation.

Her eyes narrowed as she tried her best to work through what he was telling her. 'The Boy', she presumed, must have been Dillon, but she couldn't discern any reason for him to refer to him as anything other than his name. Was it a term of endearment? He wasn't speaking in a particularly pleasant manner about him, though, and he had quite obviously prioritized the acquisition of his new pair of leggings above both of them. But why had he so insistently gone alone?

"Congratulations," she bitterly remarked - until she registered that he found it necessary to point out that they matched. Her expression softened, but was no less confused.

"Ah, truly: congratulations," she tried again, fidgeting as she began to feel out of place even within the little niche with him. "We do match."

But hers were not leggings. They were a rather ornate pair of underwear, which she showed him by hooking her fingers into the thigh-length slit in her skirt, pulling it up and over until they were clearly visible. It was just clothing, and she thought nothing of it.

Discussing this particular similarity had allowed her to relax just slightly, but she froze again at the sight of him kneeling in front of her. A lump caught in her throat as she seemed to recall a familiarity here, an insistence, flowery words and demands, the necessity to answer now--and then it was gone, leaving her staring down at a man on one knee with a nagging feeling that this was important and she couldn't remember why.

Which was concerning.

"I am not a jewel." The reminder would come as many times as it had to, but this one was hoarse and timid. "But I--how could this have been done with me in mind? Why was I not worthy of joining you on your quest? What is it, exactly, that you think of me, which commands my presence in your thoughts?"

He was knelt down in a position that made lifting of skirts all the more embarrassing, and when she did it - albeit in the most unromantic and innocent of ways - he stumbled so quickly up to his feet that he fell back onto his a** in surprise. He scrambled back to his feet and turned around, keeping his body ram straight in order to fight the urge to turn and look at the pristine stretch of skin she'd exposed to show him. He was no pervert! It was against everything he stood for to look! He simply couldn't!

"My dear lady." His voice cracked in a pre-pubescent manner as he spoke, red faced and flushed with heat. "Please, I am not worthy to see such things. You must save the sight of the body for the wedding chambers, surely." Was his heart actually exploding? This was cause for concern, as he did not want his last legacy to be a death by perversion. He was better than that!

He almost turned around when she inquired about the quest, but stopped himself a moment later. He wasn't ready to look at her - even the sight of her face was still going to make him blush as red as roses for a few minutes more. "You are a jewel. You're my jewel." He practically growled out, adamant and stubborn about the nickname. "Precious and lovely, and worth more than all the treasure in the world combined. Save your words - you will not convince me otherwise. I am a connoisseur of beauty, and yours is unmatched." Of course, this was an exaggeration - he couldn't remember most of the women he'd met in his life. This was only how he felt, even if it was filled with flowery, ridiculous prose.

"The quests are dangerous! Do you think me a monster, that I would ask you to accompany me where there is danger and sickness and death, just so that I could have your company soothe my ails with each step? You would think me that selfish? I am offended, my lady. You think so little of me. I would not put you in danger for my own lowly needs."

The reaction to the sight of her bare skin neither flattered nor impressed Mildred, and her eyes began to narrow with disbelief. Though his talk of wedding chambers made her feel briefly ill, reviving the concerns that she might have forgotten something relevant to this particular subject, it was quickly buried beneath a veritable mental landslide of annoyance.

Her eyes were narrowed into slits as she glared at the back of his head. Instead of furthering her attempts to sink into the stone of the wall, she began to seek options of getting past him.

"We have ventured out into this dangerous territory together already. You are not asking me to join you - you are refusing my right to," she spat, shoving at him with one hand. It did nothing. "I am a knight-apprentice, just as you are. Sir Mordred accepted me under his tutelage. I was chosen to face the very same dangers and maladies and risk of demise as you were."

Yet he had the gall to insinuate that she was the one in the wrong. Her hands clenched into fists, and she could no longer veil her tone, her anger apparent in each harsh syllable.

"No, then; you are the one who thinks so little of me. Reducing me to a simple object. An object whose only value is its aesthetic properties, whose singular purpose is to be set in one place to admire, to be sold and traded, to accent its bearer. I have journeyed at your side. I have cared for your wounds. I have ensured your safety. My body is weak, and I am scarcely capable of any of this, but I am attempting to provide you with all that I can. And you give none of this any relevance. All that you allow for my identity is that I have somehow managed to achieve all of this by being your jewelry."

Maybe she had never seen herself, and maybe that created some disparity between their opinions of her beauty, but she still felt sure that her appearance was not her greatest attribute. Surely it wasn't. Surely she was not trying so hard for nothing.

"Well, I--" Seething, she stopped to let out a little huff of irritation and stomped her foot. "Well I am not. I am not yours. I am not a jewel. I am not an object. If my only worth to you is a pretty sight to lift your spirits at your whims, then I do think very little of you indeed. I would rather not waste what minuscule value I do have on someone who is blind to it."

Every word spoken was like a dagger straight into his heart, shattering every notion he held dear with the sharp talon tips her anger wielded against him. She was demanding that he treat her with the same respect he would a fellow knight, but she was a lady, and a frail, darling one at that. How could she expect him to hold the same standards to her as she would with a man of his size and stature? Was she mad?

He finally turned around, because the embarrassment was gone, and he needed to look at her when he spoke. Even now, full of fire and brimstone, she looked like she could break at the gentlest touch. He pursed his lips in confusion, and shook his head slowly at her.

And yet, what of the fact that he considered her a jewel, and nothing more? These words held a fair bit more understanding for him than the idea of putting her in danger; because he knew nothing about her, save that she had captured his heart with nothing more than a look. That was how it was supposed to be, and yet - the more she spoke, the more he realized that getting to know her would have been far more efficient at recognizing her positive attributes.

The woman had a lot to say, which was odd, but not necessarily bad. It drew him in, made him thoughtful, and equally confused. But the truth was, she did not want to waste her value on him because he'd never thought to discover it. And that, above all, was fair.

"Then you are not mine." He agreed, acquiescing only partially to her angry demands. "Forgive me, Mildred. Your anger is righteous and true. Perhaps I think less of you than I should, but I just - I simply - I don't know how to think otherwise." His brow furrowed, and he slumped with dismay. "Your point is well made. I deserve nothing of your time. I have done nothing to deserve it."

He moved away from the niche, backing away into the hall - which had all but emptied now that the crowds had made their way outside.

"You've given me much to think about." He admitted. "But I daresay, when all of my contemplations are over, you may still not like what I am." And oh, the first pang of actual, physical pain clenched his heart as he realized that truth. There was a chance, a heavy, honest chance, that he did not deserve her. He had to find a way to accept that, instead of barging past it as he'd been doing. He had to find a way to accept that he could not always have his way.

And that did not feel like it would come easy.

His words came as a surprise, admittedly, but they were still not enough to calm her entirely. She found no urgency to forgive him as he'd asked for her to, nor found any intentions to praise him for acknowledging her points as valid. This was not special. It was not a feat.

"When your contemplations bring you to a conclusion, you may not still like what--who--I am," she mumbled, beginning to lose the ground she'd been so firmly standing on. She shuffled backwards and clutched one hand tightly with the other. "I cannot cease my efforts to have a place within the ranks of our fellow knights. If you are so set in your determination to have my affections...if that is what you are seeking, and not simply attempting to acquire me in a more general sense..."

Frankly, she suspected that would continue to be the case. And if he continued to stress this to her at every turn, reminding her how glaringly apparent it was that she was not like the rest of them, she doubted that she could be strong enough to withstand it.

"Prove to me that you believe that I belong. That I belong where you belong. If that place is not as a knight, I may be inclined to concede my battle to remain here. But if my best is not enough, if I must be stripped of my identity and humanity to fit with you, I must insist that you do not continue to pry me away from my place of acceptance. It is not easy for me to assert my relevance. I cannot risk losing what little I have because you do not want me to have it."

When he thought of marriage, he was shocked to realize that her words - however negative - sounded exactly like what he'd assumed was supposed to happen. She, the doting wife, would strip herself of all that made her unique and solitary, in order to cleave to her husband's life. She would become his, in all things, because love was greater than personal achievement. That made sense.

She spoke of things he'd considered common sense as if they were vile poison, and in doing so she poisoned his thoughts on the matter. They shriveled and blackened into words of disdain, uttered only under extreme insult. That was everything he'd come to believe - an insult. To her. To womankind.

So, too, was he an insult.

"I would like to." He began, hesitant even now. "But what you ask of me will not come easy. I still find it hard to accept that I am not giving you everything a woman could ever ask for. But I know I'm not giving you anything you are asking for. I accept that. I need more time to think things through."

He risked losing her to a man who did understand the values she needed respected. That familiar old competitiveness rose up inside of him, urging him to lie and tell her sweet lies that spoke of everything she desired, in order to win her favor.

He tamped the urge down, and looked away.

"I am not that man yet." He muttered, resting his back against the wall beside her niche, and slumping down to the ground. "I may never be. I can only promise to try."

It was promising that he still believed that he would like to do any of this, Mildred thought, shortly before asking herself why she felt such a positive response to this. She was wasting time and energy by caring in such a singular manner.

But maybe that was part of being part of something.

"What I ask of myself does not come easily," she countered, raising her brows. It had seemed all this time that he was expending more effort than necessary, so it came as a bit of a surprise to learn that this was more difficult than what he'd been doing in his attempts to claim her. How frequently he'd gone out of his way, how often he'd veered into irrelevant flashiness.

"My desires are few. I would like to feel properly human. I would like to be accepted regardless. I would like to know that I have a place somewhere for me. Specifically. Irreplaceably. These are all identical to what I ask of myself; I would not ask of you what I would not want to be asked of me. You would not be obligated to be the sole provider of all of these desires. I endeavor now to achieve these things alone, so I am capable of bearing any portion of it on my own. If you would rather accept the challenge of providing this all on your own, then you are welcome to attempt to do so as well."

Her fingers came to rest against his shoulder, gentle and unobtrusive, and she took a moment's pause in silence before she spoke again.

"But it will not be easy alone," she warned. "I am not opposed to assistance of any caliber, and I do not feel any need to unnecessarily assert independence or dominance. I am well aware that I am subordinate in many instances. I only want what I deserve, as paltry an amount as it may be. I simply hope that you will someday understand the significance of these as I do, whether or not it has any relevance to me."

She spoke with an intelligence and subtle grace previously unheard of, and he found himself sinking into a lull of just listening, instead of letting her words sink in. Frail though she may be, there were qualities about her that exceeded his own in so many ways, and he'd never even considered them. It thrilled him to finally realize that he could appreciate these - but then he realized that he was more thrilled by his ability to appreciate. Less so was his appreciation of her actual intelligence.

So far, the experiment was a failure.

"What you ask. What you want." He pushed himself up off of the ground, his hand resting against hers so that it never lifted off of his shoulder. "It is fair, but what if I cannot help you achieve it? What if I am not the one that would lift you to your greatest achievements? What if all I do is hold you back?"

His hand intertwined with hers, as it dropped back down to his side. He frowned, hating the sound of his words even as he spoke them. They were bitter on his tongue.

"Give me time with my thoughts. Let me try to uncover the answers before I pledge myself to your side. Because I fear, my - " He bit his tongue before he called her his again, and stopped himself. "I fear, Mildred, that once I promise this, even if I am a poison to your goals, I will never again be able to give you up."

He bent in, and pressed his lips against her forehead. "I will consider. If the answer is yes, I will find you. But if I cannot, I will endeavor to save you the trouble of seeing my wretched face again."

She dismissively shrugged.

"If you cannot, then you do not have to." She'd made it this far on her own (she presumed, knowing no other possible alternative), and could continue to do so until she was no longer capable of it. "I seek no recognition above any others. I do not need to achieve any greatness. I seek to work so tirelessly to maintain the evidence that I belong here - not because I desire to be better than our peers."

Just as she began to snidely think that he might find this concept difficult to grasp, he took her hand in his own, effectively eradicating that thought. And all of the rest of them. She stared directly ahead of her in a panic, trying to remember what she should do here; when she arrived at nothing, she cleared her throat and tried not to think about it. This was nowhere near as simple a task as it should have been.

"If you can provide me with the sense that I belong with you, I need nothing else. I will not be demoted to an object if this is fulfilled, but my insistence to fit in among the others will be less significant. Additionally, you cannot hold me back from belonging with you, by nature of what you desire. If you can achieve what you wish to pledge, if your answer is indeed an affirmative, then you will not need to forfeit--to give me, ah--"

What was she saying? Her cheeks flushed and the heat of their color began to spread all the way down to her shoulders. She didn't want to finish her sentence. She didn't want to continue. Anxious and trapped in a corner of her own devising, she opted to improvise, reaching up to pat his cheek.

"Take your leave. But I will first allow you the knowledge of a secret, Robert," she whispered, leaning in towards him in a properly conspiratorial fashion. "My vision is quite impaired. I can hardly see your face as we are. I see you simply as a man surrounded by the halo of the sun. You need not concern yourself with such dramatics."

Her vision was impaired? She couldn't even see him? She had been missing out on his glorious perfection this entire time?!

Why did she even want him around in the first place? What possible reason could she have had for -

Heaven help him, he could feel something change in that moment. Something irrevocable. To know that she had considered him worth the time to adventure with based on something other than looks was soul shattering, because Robert did not think there was anything else as important. He was gorgeous.

And she didn't care.

He bent down until his forehead pressed firmly against hers, and their noses touched. He widened his eyes curiously, and breathed out an almost impatient;

"And now?"
