The Semblance of Unity

Predestined Victim

PostPosted: Wed May 06, 2015 2:42 pm

Quests had become something important to Hollandaise even in the short time she'd been at Camelot. There were things knights were expected to do and one of those things was going out on a quest. It strengthened the body and the mind and tested survival skills. She did not expect to succeed, not really - she was only a knight-apprentice, after all, and somehow it was very important that she not strive too hard above her station. But she could and would try, within the rules, to uphold the glory of the knightly order. It was only right.

She quickly stocked up on supplies, figuring that traveling lightly might make for a quicker trip. Hollandaise counted her arrows, restrung her bow, and saddled up Hunter, her horse. She nosed him out onto the path, food stowed safely away in the saddlebags, Hunter was a pretty buckskin quarter horse, perfectly suited to her size. Unfortunately, he was a bit feisty... And there were other horses on the road. He tossed his mane and sidled up next to a black-haired boy riding nearby. Hollandaise breathed deeply and tried to angle his head away, but Hunter merely flicked an ear back and continued.

He slowly, deliberately lipped at the other rider's knee. "Hunter!" Hunter snorted and did it again as Hollandaise felt the tips of her ears pinken. This was not knightly behavior! "Ah... Ah... I apologize, my horse seems to... like you. I am called Hollandaise and if you just bonk him on his nose, he might leave you alone." Her voice was moderately hopeful. As she spoke, she looked curiously at the boy, noticing that he, too, held a bow and that he might just be...

"Oh, are you questing as well?" A thread of interest wormed in her voice and she blinked up at him.

Chaya jumped when a sudden huff of equine breath warmed his knee. He took one hand off his own horse's reins long enough to gently shove the culprit's nose away with his palm. "Hey, that's not a nosebag," he said cheerfully, and looked to the side to see a brown-haired, nervous-looking girl riding the inquisitive horse.

"I'm questing," he agreed. "I guess you are too? Do you want company? It might be safer on the roads with two." He reined Bird in lightly to get the black horse to slow down and fall in beside their new friend.

"Hunter-" She patted the horse's shoulder with a measured degree of both exasperation and fondness. "-is not the best of companions." And he was large - she liked large things, and fluffy things, and green things, but Hunter made her nervous when he was ill-behaved. It was a little better having someone there.

They rode into the forest and Hollandaise's mouth popped open. In the late afternoon sunlight, the forest looked as though the leaves were made of gold. She hummed creakily for a moment. "I do not know why, but I like the forest. It is comforting, although someone told me this forest was frightening. I think I could live in a tree." She reached out a hand and scraped her fingers along the bark.

"Questing, though, is a knightly duty and I think it is very important to act just as you are expected to and n-" Something smacked into her face. Suddenly, a small deluge of bees swarmed her. She shrieked and Hunter reared up, tumbling her off of his back. With a pained whinny, he was off, leaving Hollandaise in the dirt, surrounded by a few crushed bodies of bees. Welts were forming on her arm and one right across the bridge of her nose.

"Bird isn't very good at holding a conversation," Chaya agreed, and patted the side of his horse's neck. Bird snorted and flicked an ear back at him.

"I like it too," he said as the trees closed in overhead, slanting rays of afternoon sun illuminating the road ahead. "It's peaceful. You can just be yourself out in the woods." He reached up to brush his fingers against some low-hanging leaves.

"I haven't quested before," he said, then added, thoughtfully, "I think. It's important to - " He was cut off by a sudden angry buzzing and a shriek; Hollandaise's horse reared, throwing her off, and bolted. Chaya reined Bird in and swung hastily down off the horse's back, running over to check on the girl and help her up. "Are you okay?"

Rolling a 1: A giant spider scares you so much you drop whatever it is you're eating! -5 Food

She gave a watery sniff and touched the welt on her nose. It didn't feel like the bee had left his stinger in the bump, which was just as well - she hadn't liked getting them out. Accepting Chaya's hand, she smiled gratefully at him and bounced onto her feet, ignoring the creak of her bones. Normally, she would have gotten up on her own, refusing most help, but Chaya seemed exceptionally nice. Maybe it was all that fluffy black hair.

Hollandaise blinked and realized she'd been staring at him for quite some time. She coughed awkwardly and looked at the ground. "Yes, thank you, I am mostly fine. T-this is terribly unknightly,,, My nose hurts," she blurted. Knights did not blurt out random things. She busied herself dusting off her clothing. "Did you say your horse's name was Bird?" Her head tilted, a lock of hair sliding down to curl around her collarbone. "Does he fly?" She turned a critical eye to Bird, noting that he had, in fact, no wings. Humming lightly, she reached into her bag and offered an apple to the strangely-named Bird.

And then, a spider skittered across the path. Well, perhaps skittered was not the most accurate of words - galumphed, perhaps. It was huge. Hollandaise had dropped the apple she was holding out to Bird and it rolled slowly, dramatically into the forest. The spider paused, turning red eyes towards her, and chittered softly before scuttling off.

"C-chaya - did you see that? It was so large!" Her voice was excited and her golden eyes sparkled with interest. If not for the quest, she would've followed it into the forest. Her toes curled in her shoes.

"Knights sometimes get bumps too," Chaya offered helpfully. "I mean, they must. We must. Everyone's human, and everyone takes a fall sometimes. Right?"

"Yep! His name's Bird, because his coat shines like a bird's wing," Chaya explained, and patted Bird's side proudly. Bird, however, was not quite so unconcerned or interested in the huge spider that trotted across the path, and the horse bolted back down the path towards the safety of the stable.

"Bird," Chaya called after the horse forlornly. "Come back ..." He looked at the path ahead, then at the path back. The horses knew the way back home, and they'd be okay, he was sure, and the quest was Important, but ...

Rolling a 3: You accidentally step on a booby trap as snakes start chasing you! Why did it have to be snakes... -10 damage

Hollandaise watched, a little crestfallen, as the shiny-as-a-bird's-wing Bird bolted. "Well," she offered hesitantly, "-at least we are now evenly matched, even if you are a little taller. I am certain Bird will go and frolic with Hunter... maybe. Perhaps." She sounded a little unsure of both the idea of their horses frolicking and unsure of where exactly she had been going with that thought. But, regardless of where Bird and Hunter were, they had to go onward.

"I think perhaps I fall a bit too much to be a good knight, after all. Do you remember why you became one? I can't, but it feels like it was important." She rubbed her hands across her hips as they entered the mountain. It was dark and dank inside; it smelled of dead and dying things. Hollandaise shivered and stuck closely to Chaya, one thin hand absent-mindedly reaching out to hold onto his sleeve.

A hissing sound reached her ears and she half-turned and then froze. "Chaya," she whispered. "Chaya, I need you to run. Vipers." And then she was off, her hand encircled around his wrist.

"They got scared, so they'll go home to the stable," Chaya said, nodding. "They'll be okay there. We'll find them when we go back and brush them down properly."

The question made him pause, squinting in the dim light as he thought about it. "I don't remember either," he said. "But I feel like it was important too. Like it was something I had to do." He didn't mind her hand on his sleeve; it felt natural.

The hissing made the hair on the back of his neck stand up and he broke into a run, more than willing to be dragged along. They fled down narrow passageways, up featureless stairs. Eventually he slowed down, trying to catch his breath. "I think ... we lost them. Hey, is that light up ahead?"

He straightened up and took a few eager steps forward. Something clicked under his foot, and as he threw himself forward to escape whatever would be behind him, a pair of blades swung out of the walls, slicing at him.

Rolling a 3: You accidentally shout a little too loud in excitement and unleash an avalanche! -10 damage for WHOLE PARTY.

Hollandaise blinked as they slowed, pressing a hand to her heaving side. "It... is light," she said. They were almost there - a quest completed was a true knightly thing, she thought. She turned to beam at him when he stepped forward, triggering the trap. Hollandaise's hand immediately went to her bow, an arrow nocked before she realized what it was. Axes swept down and she thought he was okay, but a shivery kind of fear ran through her. He was always okay, right?

She didn't have time to think about the oddness of that thought before she was ducking through the slowed blades. "Are you hurt?" Hollandaise fingered a ragged tear in his clothing. "We are so close, I can feel it, Chaya." And with that, she hugged him tightly, the contact unexpected even to her (but it was okay, because he felt just right, after all - even if she flushed and wondered if that was a knighty thing to do) and tried to tug him up the stairs.

"Chaya, we did it!" Her excited voice pierced through the fresh air outside. Then the rocks came. At first with a rumble, then a roar. She stood, frozen as they barreled down towards the both of them.

Rolling a 1: Giant unexplainable eagles start attacking you! Ow! You take -10 damage for yourself.

"I'm okay." Chaya patted himself down to check whether he was actually okay, and decided that he was. The hug was sort of surprising, but he didn't mind it, and hugged back before following her up the stairs.

He squinted in the light outside, which felt terribly bright after the caverns they'd been walking through. Her excited voice rang out, and was answered by a rumble, a roar from the sleeping mountain. Chaya grabbed Hollandaise's arm and pulled her back behind an outcropping to wait out the avalanche, shielding her without thinking about it.

Once the noise and shaking died down, he peeked around the outcrop to see that the path up to the summit had been covered by rocks. "I guess we have to climb," he said, and peered at her worriedly. "Can you climb, are you hurt?"

There was a flapping sound, and he looked up just in time for the eagle to dive at him, its talons outstretched. Perhaps it had been angered by the avalanche or the voices. Chaya held his arm over his face and flailed in the direction of the bird. "Go away!"

Eventually, it did, and he peeked out from behind his arm to watch it flap sulkily off.
