After a tasteless breakfast of 1/4th a bowl of porridge, Barth had taken his time to explore. He engaged in some harmless chatter, but had mostly listened, trying to get a feel for the situation. It was, as he mostly gathered, grim. Working supplies were only available to the knights.
And, of course, quest-seekers.
Barth worried that with flimsy equipment, battles might prove...well. He didn't like to think on it too much. He had sought out Zar to broach the subject. There was a mountain, not too far a ride from Camelot, with objects they could trade to better their chances.
Most had come with nothing, and the blood-stained armor and tired horses supplied by the armory and stables looked like they had failed a fair number of masters. He, at least, had his own horse and sword.QUEST STATUS Food remaining: Your food remaining/ Your total food value from all party members added. YOUR HP: Your knight's current HP

After the kind of satisfying night's rest that only the truly oblivious were capable of, Zar was feeling a lot better. Sure, his muscles ached from whatever he'd gone through to get here, but he was already feeling better, after all it was rather tough to remain fixated on the negative when you could hardly remember what the negatives had been.
Even the food didn't bother him much, it had been meager and bland but at least it was food, given the state of the rest of the kingdom he was grateful even for that much. Still, it wasn't for free, they were expected to go out into the surrounding lands in search of artifacts to aid the cause and so there was really no option but to do so. The prospect of getting more opportunity to trot around after his new friend was also quite a bit of motivation.
It took him quite a bit to get dressed, but when he was he mounted up Goat and joined Barth outside the stables, his packs laden with as much of the extra food he'd been able to barter as possible.
"Ready?" he asked.

"I think so," Barth said, checking over the stirrups one last time.
His armor was about as meagre as his breakfast. As they rode towards the forest and out of the castle walls, he noticed something small in the road.
"I...hope the paths are straight-forward enough. How are you with cartography?"
He worried, for a moment, that it was a shadow...but it resolved itself to be very solid. And furry. And...very intent on blocking the way. After a bit of awkward shuffling with his horse, he dismounted.
"Err," he told the thing, "I think- would you mind, moving along so-ACK!" Whatever it was went straight for his....everything.

Zar had come prepared with armor at least, he had been expecting to join the knights before his hand had been forced pre-emptively. Still, it was one thing being fitted for armour and another actually wearing the stuff, it was uncomfortable riding but he assumed, had to be gotten used to.
"I am.. not so great with carts." Zar said, carefully. "I think."
The badger got a concerned look and his horse hung back.
"It might be disea-" the beast leapt straight for Barth's face and it was all Zar could do to laugh incredulously and back off even further.
It was a little too far as he almost backed completely off the road and into a ravine.

When he regained his horse's footing he looked back at the single fallen pack he was not about to climb down after.
"Erm. We are down a little food."

After rolling a (very dead) badger off him, Barth lay on the ground for a while, just hoping he wasn't in an ant nest.
"It's, it's alright," he assured Zar weakly.
"We're up one pelt. And some meat. ...Debatably."

"I really hope we don't get so desperate as to eat badger meat." Zar said grimly, continuing on through the winding forest.
He didn't get very far though, only a few days into their trip, he found himself suddenly very ill, it became hard to keep down food let alone travel and made the decision to turn back before it got worse.
Barth was nevertheless told that if there was any way of finding something that could be traded, he should continue on his way thereafter.

After ensuring Zar would be alright, Barth set out on his own...not very confident of the situation, admittedly. The badger scratches itched.
How was he supposed to handle actual...things if he couldn't manage the local wildlife?

Recovering, he endeavored to reach, well, the actual place they were supposed to go.
He was glad, at least, to be out of the forest.
Some part of him considered writing a missive, but there was no one really to take it, and that would be pretty absurd. They hadn't really been all the far from the castle, honestly. Everyone would probably be fine. People did these sorts of quests all the time, didn't they? Alone. Towards...mysterious, magic-infested mountains.
That would certainly not be guarded by...anything in particular. When he stepped off his horse however, to investigate the cave mouth, he found that this was not the case. And with the large, exceedingly large, very large bundle of arrows headed his way...

He ducked. Right into...a crate full of even more food.
The arrows thudded harmlessly into the rock and cave floor. Were these quests really for magic items? And not supply runs? Well, he knew how to handle merchandise, if anything else. ...Didn't he? Did he.
Maybe he didn't.

The path up through the mountain was arduous in armour without a horse to carry him, and he had no way to tell if this was indeed the way that Barth had come, but still he persevered, making his way through the creepy winding halls of the mostly deserted mountain, trying very hard not to think about what would happen if he ran out of food here and got stuck. When he finally caught up to the other man, it was with very intense relief and he eagerly called out. "I came back" But even as he said it there was a roar that absolutely shook the caverns. "Oh...oh no." he said. "No time for greetings. JUST RUN." And he did, as fast as he possibly could right out of the caverns. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 28 (-5 every turn I take) YOUR HP: 30 Rolling a 4: You hear a horrific roaring noise and when you look behind you you see a terrifying beast made of fire chasing you! Barth left behind a long string of swears and oaths that were by no means gentle. By the end of the winding labyrinth passages they were not roasted to the bone, so there was that.
"Well, here we are," Barth said, half dragging his horse, the remaining food, and barely willing or able to manage hills at this point.
"Fire. I just can't believe it was actually on fire. Is it made of infinite energy? You can't just- go on, burning and burning without, you know, fuel. I suppose it just draws the magic for it from nowhere. Why does it bother me so much? Maybe I was a..."

"You know it never occurred to me to even consider that." Zar said, equally exhausted, but entirely on foot, he wasn't even sure how he'd made it this far, hardly able to keep going and resenting his decision to wear armour more and more with every step. "Maybe it pulls it from somewhere else, maybe there is some kind of logging camp dedicated to keeping large beasts on fire. Maybe it is a wizard." The summit felt very very far away, but Zar remained, despite everything else in apparently good spirits, enjoying the act of climbing and rather perky about it. When they reached the top, he looked around suspiciously. "Is that it?" he asked. QUEST STATUS Food remaining: 23 (-5 every turn I take) YOUR HP: 30
